Of course it always remains unidentified, but if this thing makes unnatural movements and is able to accelerate to Mach10 from standing still, it is not strange to say that the UFO is under intelligent control and is probably using technology that we humans don't have. Witness accounts are useless if you want to come up with a scientific theory. They are not useless if you want to draw attention to a certain subject so you can actually start doing some scientific research on a certain subject. It's also useless to dismiss eyewitness accounts straight away and laughing at the people who have seen UFO's and didn't ask to have an experience like that. Normal people see them too, not just drunk hillbillies.
As entertaining and informative as Dr. Tyson is, when he gets to the part about evidence, he never accepts radar verification along with multiple eyewitnesses. He just won't go near any specifics. For example, the famous JAL1628 Alaskan incident with both FAA and military radar verification.
He has his shtick and riffs, but this is one area where he doesn't seem open to discussing events. He goes back to the "U" in ufo. But people also see many ships, and mechanical devices.
The first video I watched of Tyson was him explaining black holes. It was very informing. Since then, gone down hill fast. The more videos I watch, the more it seems like all he's interested in is resurrecting superstition in order to kill it again. Why not just let it die and educate people on real physics? Let people believe whatever superstitions they want to, Tyson. Let it go. Don't waste your mind on this stuff. You only fuel the fire....

You will find granite cut with 0.001" accuracy in ways that we can barely replicate today with our best machinery. @fatmimethintenor I think he's assuming, probably correctly, that if aliens have developed the technology to travel perhaps 10s or 100s of light years to get to us, they're hardly likely to need to rely on the atmosphere to slow down their gravitational descent to the surface, as we currently do. Well, not that I believe in aliens visiting the earth or anything -- but the space shuttle travels in space -- and it uses a runway when it returns to earth. It's true that the big old mother ship came down in Close Encounters, but that's not to say that the aliens couldn't have landed using some sort of landing craft that passed through the atmosphere using lift.

@Khorzho: There are various experiments that support the quark theory. You can use particle accelerators to smash protons together and observe that the scatter pattern is more consistent with their mass being divided into three lumps rather one. Quark theory also explains nuclear fusion and the behavior of muons.
There are *reproducible* experiments. Nobody says "trust me, quarks exist, I saw one, here is a photo". There are experiments anyone can do, and have been done by many scientists.

What I said was that there is no real physical evidence and that I need something more substantial like a physical object I can take to the lab or coordinates where I can point my telescope. Actually U does not stand for anything for most "UFO believers", for them UFO = Flying saucer or alien beings that operate them. UFO does not mean unknown flying object (for believers at least) anymore. The meaning sort of changed and now many doesn't even think about the original definition, when they say UFO. Its as if UFO is always meant "Alien spacecraft or alien beings from another planet/dimensional plane", instead of "Unidentified flying object." Strange as it is, but thats how it is.
From the dawn of recorded history thousands of years ago up until the later part of the 19th century there was no electricity, no cars, no planes, no computers ect ect. As entertaining and informative as Dr. Tyson is, when he gets to the part about evidence, he never accepts radar verification along with multiple eyewitnesses. He just won't go near any specifics. For example, the famous JAL1628 Alaskan incident with both FAA and military radar verification.
He has his shtick and riffs, but this is one area where he doesn't seem open to discussing events. He goes back to the "U" in ufo. But people also see many ships, and mechanical devices.

If realization of a unification of 'forces' is made, then one can postulate that gravity can be affected by magnetic forces. Though conventional science has yet to tie the two together intrinsically through mathematics the fact remains that magnetism acts in many ways as gravity does.

You will find granite cut with 0.001" accuracy in ways that we can barely replicate today with our best machinery. If you examine it with open mind, you will be forced to conclude one of two things... Either some ETs came and built it thousands of years ago, or pre-Incan peoples had access to machine tools better than what we have today.

Well, not that I believe in aliens visiting the earth or anything -- but the space shuttle travels in space -- and it uses a runway when it returns to earth. It's true that the big old mother ship came down in Close Encounters, but that's not to say that the aliens couldn't have landed using some sort of landing craft that passed through the atmosphere using lift.
It just wouldn't have been as cool.

Most people that have seen Ufo's don't really care what others think, or feel the NEED to provide evidence to anybody. It's a major leap of believability until you see one yourself, but when the day comes you end up scratching your head as to why anybody would go off on a rant like this. ok..he brought up roswell indirectly...called the aliens stupid for crashing...except he did not mention that there was a big lightning storm happening at the time so that could have brought a craft down..and radar sees everything comming and the military sees that...so if anything crashes..and the militery is always there first..go figure..do you think the military is going to go running to Neil Degrasse to tell him? they want him in the dark like everybody else..he's part of the system..

@commonsensrules He is an astro-physicist with a better understanding of space-time then 99.99% of people on earth, he believes time travel possible because physics says it is, its possible in theory but the technology required to manipulate the forces in the universe to make it happen is improbable, ie what material would you use to create the vehicle to travel through a blackhole.

I would love to see the theory that says reverse time-travel is theoretically possible? I am aware of Einstiens musings on forward time-travel, but never heard of any peer reviewed theoryconcerning reverse time-travel.
Is it possible? Who knows, thats not the point- the point is that Tyson exhibits classic elitest attitude towards subjects he disagrees with!
Regardless of his education, he is in no position to claim authority on the subject of Ufology!

@commonsensrules Elitism is a good thing, you and I can join the elites by investing in the same education once you have attained your PHD in Astro-Physics you will be able to beat back Tyson's "hypocracy", unfortunately once you have the knowledge of physics, calculus & location of heavenly bodies you will be agreeing a lot more with him.
Ufology is BS, just because you don't know what an object is you cannot label it an Alien Craft, its what religion does, when man cannot explain = God did it.

This has to be the most close minded attitude towards a documented phenomena by a scientist I've ever witnessed. In fact, I don't see how he calls himself a scientist and maintains such a dismissive mind-set. It's almost like he's doing a stand-up routine at the expense of thousands of witnesses and hundreds of videos and pictures. What a shame.

@Khorzho: As a scientist, I am equally dismissive of any claimed phenomenon that lacks real physical evidence or can be accessed by experimentation and observation. I need either a physical object I can take to the lab, or a set of coordinates where I can point my telescope. Anything to the effect of "trust me, I saw it", is really unscientific.

@dcarrera01 So tell me. How many quarks have you observed in your career? Or what about the fusion reaction in the core of a star... how exactly did that appear when you observed it in person? Or maybe you've seen replication of a chromosome in action? "Science" is all about inference of observations to create hypothesis. Just because YOU don't observe something directly, doesn't mean it can't possibly be. UFOs are a documented OBSERVED phenomena. Neil is telling us to ignore observations

@Khorzho: There are various experiments that support the quark theory. You can use particle accelerators to smash protons together and observe that the scatter pattern is more consistent with their mass being divided into three lumps rather one. Quark theory also explains nuclear fusion and the behavior of muons.
There are *reproducible* experiments. Nobody says "trust me, quarks exist, I saw one, here is a photo". There are experiments anyone can do, and have been done by many scientists.

@Khorzho: To continue my last post: Strictly speaking, neither Neil nor I have said that alien spacecraft could not possibly be here. What I said was that there is no real physical evidence and that I need something more substantial like a physical object I can take to the lab or coordinates where I can point my telescope. These would be reproducible experiments. Neil has similarly said that the evidence so far does not justify the conclusion that alien spacecraft have visited us.

Actually U does not stand for anything for most "UFO believers", for them UFO = Flying saucer or alien beings that operate them. UFO does not mean unknown flying object (for believers at least) anymore. The meaning sort of changed and now many doesn't even think about the original definition, when they say UFO. Its as if UFO is always meant "Alien spacecraft or alien beings from another planet/dimensional plane", instead of "Unidentified flying object." Strange as it is, but thats how it is.

From the dawn of recorded history thousands of years ago up until the later part of the 19th century there was no electricity, no cars, no planes, no computers ect ect. Then, suddenly in a span of 100 years, we arrive at where we stand now? I'd like to hear Dr. Tyson explain what he thinks caused such an unprecedented and lighting fast evoloution on this planet. There's no way I believe it all happened from within our own planet. If it did, why'd we get so smart so fast and so suddenly????

Pick one example you stated and study each step it if you wish, or don't. But there is no finer example of the 'argument from ignorance' than your comment. As in 'I don't know this happens so it must be X'. Plenty of people do know how it happened so either research it or be happy not knowing and take a break.

@kitrick42 We were almost equally smart long before. The jump from cartwheels to cars with microchips is not that big. To an alien species that is 1 million years more advanced than us, our "technology" is not even technology in the sense that they understand what technology is. To them our spaceships wouldn't be no more advanced than our steam engines 150 years ago. We are not as advanced as you think.

The advancements between 1900-2000 are astounding compared to any other 100 year period. Im comparing ourselves to ourselves. If we want we can keep expanding our perspective again and again and again, which will ultimately defeat every scientific law and or opinion until its realized that its all pointless fodder.
