I'm just saying that I can see many words that are similar in German or English. But of course that doesn't mean I understand much of it. Winter, Maus, Haus, Wir, Lust, gut, Gott, Laus, Fuß, sinken, singen, Salz, Gold, Buch, mein, muss, Mann, bitter, mild, harmlos, wild usw. are all words that have very similar English cognates, but that doesn't mean someone who only speaks German can speak much English, either, because there are also many differences.

German has preserved much more of the original Germanic vocabulary than English.

Also our pronounciations may be hard to learn.
