@rushreef - Thanks for the compliment. No, I have never tried surfing. But I think skaters who surf have much better style in their skateboarding. They just flow a lot better. So, I'm flattered that you thought I was a surfer!
@akaRHELIK918 You can ride anything on anything. Limitless. If you learn to do it on a regular street deck and hard wheels you be a master if you eventually get yourself a bigger board and some soft wheels. Don't let your equipment hold you back!
@iamSplaz - I like pool boards a lot. The Vision deck is great. 16"+ wheelbases and 10" wide feels far more comfortable to me than the little 8.5" wide 15" wheelbase popsicle sticks. It's all a matter of preference though. Try different decks and ride whatever you are comfortable with.
@glencowcow - Correct. Front trucks stay on the whole time. If your front trucks ever leave the cement, then you are technically doing a "kickturn" and not a true "carve". When you truly carve, it's all flow.
@SuperMafia16 - I couldn't drop in when I started. I just climbed in an began from the bottom. Start that way if you're scared to drop in. You can learn the drop in later.
@SuperMafia16 - You back up as far as you can and just push. Just like starting from the bottom of a halfpipe or a miniramp. Depending upon the size of the pool, you should be able to get 2 or 3 good pushes and get your back foot on the board before you reach the opposite wall. Then you just pump it like normal.
@LearnToSkateboard Ok. ill try, and try, and thx alot, your one of the best teachers i know on youtube, cause all the rest are like "Just stop being a bitch baby and drop in!", so thx for clearing it up so i don't have to break my neck trying something out of my skill :)
@SuperMafia16 - You're welcome. And thanks for the compliments. Never try to drop-in before you are ready. That's how people get hurt. Just take your time and be patient with yourself. Start small and work your way up higher. You'll learn it. Just give yourself time.
You progressed on a good schedule. You did great. I started riding in the mid 70's and it took me around 3 to 4 months of steady riding on a wooden 1/2 pipe (20 feet long by 12 wide) to hit vert. Naturally we started to go a foot or 2 above vert, then we extended the vert another 2 feet. I see other posts mentioning the old school board. I ended up riding a board reffered to as a "Pig" 13" wide by 31" long. Tracker trucks with logan park riders. Used to glue 80 grit discs to it for grip tape.
@Xediion - I love every kind of skateboarding. Street. Pools. Skateparks. Downhill. Longboarding. I do all of it, but I mainly ride pools and transitions.
This video is really inspiring because i cant skate bowl/pools at all an it just shows with a bit of determination and will power you can achive your goals :) THanks dude!
@NewComer299 - Personal preference. You can use whatever you want. Pool board. Popsicle stick. Longboard. Whatever you like best. I like pool/vert boards the most because they have a wider width and a longer wheelbase than popsicle sticks so they are a bit easier to control.
i like that one part where you drop in on rob zombie where it says "devil on your back, i will never die" then you drop in. so sick, i wish i was committed to skating a bowl but i love the street section of parks more.
@mcloughnog - Soft or hard wheels is personal preference. I tend to ride about 97a in pools. That is my favorite. Most people like Bones SPF wheels, which are a lot harder - closer to 100a or 101a. Some folks go down to 95a and are happy with that. All depends on what works best for you.
@mcloughnog its all on your preference but i prefer OJ 3 wheels, they are quite soft compared to street wheels so u have grip but u dont want like longboard wheel soft
cool vids, ive been longboarding for about 2 years now and am thinking about buying a 71cm long board for riding pool can u do that also have u ever seen people do that?
@SuperTurhake - I like having at least a 16" wheelbase and a 10" width when riding transitions. Anything smaller is uncomfortable for me. Big boards are just easier for me to control.
@TheEliteGamer707 - Pool coping is no different than metal. As Yoda said, "No! No different! Only different in your mind." If you can drop-in on metal, you can drop-in on concrete. It's only different in your mind. That extra inch or two of angle on your board barely makes any difference. Dropping-in on vert, you just have push a LITTLE harder. Otherwise, the motion and the follow-through is identical.
That initial wipe out was awesome. nice video dude.......I took about 7 years off from skating due to knee injuries from snowboarding....At 38 years I'm doin exactly what your doing in these videos. Retraining myself to skate and working on bowl riding. Having a blast too bro.. Good job on the lessons.
Your vids are pretty cool and those '3 wheel things' are called slash as in a tiny grind on the coping/tile it was cool to see how you progressed from low back carves to really nice front carves in the deep nice
@BestDupstep - They should be as loose as possible WITHOUT getting speed-wobbles. Speed-wobbles will slow you down. Remember, what you want is to be FAST and to FLOW. If your trucks are so tight you can't flow, that's bad. If your trucks are so loose you can't go fast, that's bad too.

@xcjxmx - The best way to learn drop-ins is to start low and work your way up higher and higher. I see lots of new skaters staring at 6' transitions and when I ask, "Can you drop in on the 4' over there?" they say, "No." That's just silly. Start small and build your confidence and slowly move to higher and higher transitions.
@xcjxmx when i wanted to skate the pool and was afraid to drop in i went to the smallest ramp in the skatepark and dropped it in and worked my way up until the pool
Great vid(s)! I just hit tile at the vans combi today. Learning how to pump and carve has been a challenge for me, but practice and taking my time has been paying off.
please help. i recently started skating bowls and i reallyyyy need help with pumping. i have no fear of touching the coping or getting height on the bowl. but im slowly progressing. i need to have a detailed explanation of when shuld i have my knees bent and when to straighten them. when i come down do i straighten them out and when i go up do i suck my legs up then straighten them. and do i keep them bent when im riding flat? please reply thanks. i just want as much speed as possible
@1996XxchrisxX - You have the basic idea. Check 7:31 in the video. Remember, it takes a LOT of practice. So, just because you understand the technique doesn't mean that you will be able to do it right away. Keep working at it. In time, you'll figure out the proper timing for getting the most speed.
@LearnToSkateboard thanks alot i headed over to my local skatepark today and was able to touch the coping and pump around the bowl. i still need more speed but im starting to feel the flow of it. thanks alot!
I just started skating but broke my ankle on my first sesh ever trying to drop in... I'm lazy but want to become better and learn to do half pipe and even skate pool but what is the best thing to do? im pretty ok on the board rolling
@dellmonkeyy - Take it easy. if you just started skating, you shouldn't be trying to do drop ins yet. Learn the basics first. Learn the proper way to fall. Learn if you are goofy or regular. Learn to turn. Learn to push. Learn to stop. Learn tick-tacks. Learn to pump fakie in a miniramp. Learn frontside and backside kickturns. Once you can do all of those things, THEN you can work on learning to drop in.
@jamesal - I tend to like 97 to 100 or so. Everyone has a personal preference. I know people who skate pools with 95 or even 90. That's way too soft for me. But those people love it. Many skaters like Bones SPF wheels. Those are about the most popular pool wheels out there and tons of skaters rip on those. For me, Bones SPF are too hard in my opinion. So, you just have to find what YOU like best. As I said, I keep mine in the 97 to 100 range.
@LearnToSkateboard ive been thinking about getting a powe peralta or maybe an old school 70's formula becuase im getting this reissue Australian board made with plastic Injection for the 1970's boarder in me lol
@justin0599 - I built it myself. It's a Vision Aggressor II with silver Tracker SixTracks that I painted. The paint was actually fluorescent pink, but, yeah, they look more orange.
@justin0599 - Thanks. I already have a tutorial on how to assemble a skateboard. I have one under "61NIFhmfQaE" and I have some under the username of SkateboardCalifornia.
@aren840 - Thanks. Glad you like it. Yes, eventually I will make more. It may be a few months before I do it, but I have some ideas I'm playing with. In the meantime, I have other clips at SkateboardingCalifornia.
great videos. I'm in the same boat trying to learn pool. Skated for years. took a few years off now getting back into it and wanting to skate pools. drop in and when to pump have been my downfalls. I'll get the drop in soon enough, but your tip on the pump halfway up the wall makes sense. I have been pumping at the bottom too, couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting higher up the wall. subscribing today, keep 'em coming.
I think zerothehero means the plastic rail guards/tail protectors that a lot of boards came with in the 90's. Still useful when learning, to prevent a quick loss of wood if you keep scraping the tail, as most begginners seem to do when they keep the weight on the back.
How useful do you think drawing the ideal line in the bowl with a fat piece of chalk and using that as a guide when learning to bowl ride? I suppose you couldn't do this everywhere but some places I'm sure wouldn't be a problem.
@fatsacks70 - Interesting idea. I've never heard of anyone doing that. Although, the "best line" really never needs to be that precise, so I don't think it would be necessary. Just knowing the route (and which order to hit which pocket and hip) is all that matters.
@DJQuips - Yes. The whole point of this video was learning the absolute basics. Learning tricks is a definite goal, but wasn't the intent to showcase tricks in these clips.
@LearnToSkateboard I understand....Definitely wasn't trying to down you or anything. Your progress was great. I'd love to see you hit some coping tricks or maybe a f/s air in the future.
@DJQuips - That's cool. No need to apologize. I didn't take it as an insult. Yeah, I'm still working on getting some more skills. Thanks for the compliments.
@LearnToSkateboard lol try some 50 50 s in the poop ps im nautraly a street skater but wanted to skate a pool becuse bucky used to be my favorite skater u gave me the confidence to do it i can now drop in and bs tile also try early grabs
@sasukelgty There was (and still is) a 70's bowl where I grew up in New Zealand which was setup perfectly for bert slides. The only problem tho, it was the fastest way to wear through your wheels. Me and my friends (who all surfed) used to compete for the longest slide.
Dude, thanks. this video has been extremely helpful. im 14, and weigh 120, so skating pools isnt as easy for me becasue of my low weight. but i am still working on it, im about equal with the "blue line" at my hightest kickturns. but it takes time. what i really wanna do is get where youre at, hitting tile in those beautiful eliptical pattens.(my nearest skatepark with a pool is the laguna skatepark in Sebastopol, CA)
@mcxznbv - Thanks. I'm glad it helped. Like I say in the video, just stick with it. You'll get there. Sounds like you're doing really well on your kickturns. Just make your turns shorter (instead of doing a full 180 degrees turn, do 160 degrees so you come down at a slight angle, then do 140, then 100 and so on) and soon you'll be carving.
@LearnToSkateboard Awesome, thanks for the advice. when ive been carving, (or trying to really) it hasnt been from dropping in, its just pushing and pumping from the shallow end(maybe 5 feet). but i just have to get over my fear of dropping in.
I skate bowl every day at my local park then I went to a big park and skated a first kidney bowl. I saw 4 foot vert and I was like.. No way. If I went there daily and maybe more protection I could build my confidence. But we only have a bowl where I live and not a pool or kidney bowl.
@cristhian2188 - Thanks. Just keep at it. Like anything else in skating, it takes a lot of dedication to get good at it. But once you learn, it's SO much fun!
@sk8freakdan - Very, very little. I wasn't too good at it. Backyard pools are way more gnarly than skatepark pools. I have mad respect for backyard pool skaters. That's some gnarly skating.
have you reached the coping yet? I'm sure it would be fun to hit tile but i'd love to be able to do front and back slashes on the coping. I think you did one slash in this vid, so are the tips to get to the coping any different?
Sweet vid. I'm just getting in to skating bowls, and I know what you mean: you just get obsessed with it. It's good to see the learning curve. You really just have to be happy with every little bit of progress, even if it's just carving a little higher or something seemingly insignificant like that.
@RaymondHinton - Absolutely. I also wanted to show people that it takes long time. I was already a decent bowl/ramp skater and it still took months to learn to carve a pool properly. My hope was this would encourage people to not give up if they are progressing very slowly.
@dryn64 - I can do better than that. On my other channel, I have a detailed review of the board. Since I can't put links in the comments, I'll have to give you the ID number of the video. Just watch video "CIEyVwy_EtY"
fantastic. really inspiring. i've been skating on and off for nearly thirty years but here in rainy old england i just dont get to see too much blue tile. there are some great new skateparks being built though. i will remember your perseverance and get carving. respect to you. joe. x
That pool looks plenty deep- a good trick to learn on that main wall is the Bertlemann slide. Its not as hard as it looks, and is pretty risk free as far as injury.. just gotta do it right. I'll be posting some how-to vids on that one soon. I will attach a video if I can figure out how.
@youlosez - The free DVD actually does have 2 sections on the proper "tuck and roll" for falling on flat ground and it explains how to do a kneeslide when skating ramps/bowls/pools. Don't be afraid of getting hurt though. Everyone falls. Everyone gets hurt. That's just part of skateboarding.
05:40 on, best pump and all the hard work pays off.
awesome stuff. I bought a pool board and so i need to make some time!

Learn to turn. Learn to push. Learn to stop. Learn tick-tacks. Learn to pump fakie in a miniramp. Learn frontside and backside kickturns. Once you can do all of those things, THEN you can work on learning to drop in.

@LearnToSkateboard I'm having real trouble with bs carves and kickturns, any advice?

what type of skateboard are you riding at 2:11 ? i want one like that but have no idea what that is (i notice it has a different shape)

@dellmonkeyy - That board is my Vision Aggressor II. You can see a video review and all the specs of that board by watching video "CIEyVwy_EtY"

what kind of duro are the wheels you prefer ?
jamesal 1 year ago
@jamesal - I tend to like 97 to 100 or so. Everyone has a personal preference. I know people who skate pools with 95 or even 90. That's way too soft for me. But those people love it. Many skaters like Bones SPF wheels. Those are about the most popular pool wheels out there and tons of skaters rip on those. For me, Bones SPF are too hard in my opinion. So, you just have to find what YOU like best. As I said, I keep mine in the 97 to 100 range.

@LearnToSkateboard ive been thinking about getting a powe peralta or maybe an old school 70's formula becuase im getting this reissue Australian board made with plastic Injection for the 1970's boarder in me lol

where did u get that skateboard with orange trucks at
justin0599 1 year ago
@justin0599 - I built it myself. It's a Vision Aggressor II with silver Tracker SixTracks that I painted. The paint was actually fluorescent pink, but, yeah, they look more orange.
LearnToSkateboard 1 year ago
@LearnToSkateboard -will u eventually make a tutorial on how to make a board like that its a nice board
justin0599 1 year ago
@justin0599 - Thanks. I already have a tutorial on how to assemble a skateboard. I have one under "61NIFhmfQaE" and I have some under the username of SkateboardCalifornia.

@aren840 - Thanks. Glad you like it. Yes, eventually I will make more. It may be a few months before I do it, but I have some ideas I'm playing with. In the meantime, I have other clips at SkateboardingCalifornia.

Great video man, The pools are that what I want to start after 15years of skateboarding on the streets and about 5 years break of that.
I can see on your video it isn't gonna be easy like I supposed.
Thanks for advices and keep skating, cuz it's great thong. :)

great videos.

Still useful when learning, to prevent a quick loss of wood if you keep scraping the tail, as most begginners seem to do when they keep the weight on the back.
fatsacks70 1 year ago
How useful do you think drawing the ideal line in the bowl with a fat piece of chalk and using that as a guide when learning to bowl ride? I suppose you couldn't do this everywhere but some places I'm sure wouldn't be a problem.
fatsacks70 1 year ago
@fatsacks70 - Interesting idea. I've never heard of anyone doing that. Although, the "best line" really never needs to be that precise, so I don't think it would be necessary. Just knowing the route (and which order to hit which pocket and hip) is all that matters.

Do you see yourself possibly hitting coping tricks or maybe even getting airs in the future?
DJQuips 1 year ago
@DJQuips - Yes. The whole point of this video was learning the absolute basics. Learning tricks is a definite goal, but wasn't the intent to showcase tricks in these clips.
LearnToSkateboard 1 year ago
@LearnToSkateboard I understand....Definitely wasn't trying to down you or anything. Your progress was great. I'd love to see you hit some coping tricks or maybe a f/s air in the future.

@DJQuips - That's cool. No need to apologize. I didn't take it as an insult. Yeah, I'm still working on getting some more skills. Thanks for the compliments.

@sasukelgty - Funny you should ask. I've done berts on banks and flat ground, but never even tried in a pool. I should work on that!

@LearnToSkateboard lol try some 50 50 s in the poop ps im nautraly a street skater but wanted to skate a pool becuse bucky used to be my favorite skater u gave me the confidence to do it i can now drop in and bs tile also try early grabs

@LearnToSkateboard lol i spelt it wrong again 1 more thing where is the pool in long beach
sasukelgty 1 year ago
@sasukelgty - Pool in Long Beach? I don't know of one in Long Beach. You could always check out SoCalSkateparks and see what parks are there.
LearnToSkateboard 1 year ago
@sasukelgty There was (and still is) a 70's bowl where I grew up in New Zealand which was setup perfectly for bert slides. The only problem tho, it was the fastest way to wear through your wheels. Me and my friends (who all surfed) used to compete for the longest slide.

123mightyme 1 year ago
Dude, thanks. this video has been extremely helpful. im 14, and weigh 120, so skating pools isnt as easy for me becasue of my low weight. but i am still working on it, im about equal with the "blue line" at my hightest kickturns. but it takes time. what i really wanna do is get where youre at, hitting tile in those beautiful eliptical pattens.(my nearest skatepark with a pool is the laguna skatepark in Sebastopol, CA)
mcxznbv 1 year ago
@mcxznbv - Thanks. I'm glad it helped. Like I say in the video, just stick with it. You'll get there. Sounds like you're doing really well on your kickturns. Just make your turns shorter (instead of doing a full 180 degrees turn, do 160 degrees so you come down at a slight angle, then do 140, then 100 and so on) and soon you'll be carving.
LearnToSkateboard 1 year ago
@LearnToSkateboard Awesome, thanks for the advice. when ive been carving, (or trying to really) it hasnt been from dropping in, its just pushing and pumping from the shallow end(maybe 5 feet). but i just have to get over my fear of dropping in.

I skate bowl every day at my local park then I went to a big park and skated a first kidney bowl. I saw 4 foot vert and I was like.. No way. If I went there daily and maybe more protection I could build my confidence. But we only have a bowl where I live and not a pool or kidney bowl.

nice progress men i like that i skate much street i want to learn so get the speed in the bowl i gonna get to practice soon
cristhian2188 1 year ago
@cristhian2188 - Thanks. Just keep at it. Like anything else in skating, it takes a lot of dedication to get good at it. But once you learn, it's SO much fun!
LearnToSkateboard 1 year ago
Have you ever skated a backyard pool?
sk8freakdan 1 year ago
@sk8freakdan - Very, very little. I wasn't too good at it. Backyard pools are way more gnarly than skatepark pools. I have mad respect for backyard pool skaters. That's some gnarly skating.
LearnToSkateboard 1 year ago
have you reached the coping yet? I'm sure it would be fun to hit tile but i'd love to be able to do front and back slashes on the coping. I think you did one slash in this vid, so are the tips to get to the coping any different?
ssllgg11 1 year ago
Sweet vid. I'm just getting in to skating bowls, and I know what you mean: you just get obsessed with it. It's good to see the learning curve. You really just have to be happy with every little bit of progress, even if it's just carving a little higher or something seemingly insignificant like that.
RaymondHinton 1 year ago
@RaymondHinton - Absolutely. I also wanted to show people that it takes long time. I was already a decent bowl/ramp skater and it still took months to learn to carve a pool properly. My hope was this would encourage people to not give up if they are progressing very slowly.
LearnToSkateboard 1 year ago
I loved watching these 2 videos.
Your progression is amazing and it makes me want to do that to because it looks soooo fun!!
Thanks so much. :-)

fantastic. really inspiring. i've been skating on and off for nearly thirty years but here in rainy old england i just dont get to see too much blue tile. there are some great new skateparks being built though. i will remember your perseverance and get carving. respect to you. joe. x
MrVinegarjoe 1 year ago
That pool looks plenty deep- a good trick to learn on that main wall is the Bertlemann slide. Its not as hard as it looks, and is pretty risk free as far as injury.. just gotta do it right. I'll be posting some how-to vids on that one soon. I will attach a video if I can figure out how.
yipp88 1 year ago
Wow this is an awesome vid. Do you have any vids on falling correctly? I'm afraid of getting hurt badly.
youlosez 1 year ago
@youlosez - The free DVD actually does have 2 sections on the proper "tuck and roll" for falling on flat ground and it explains how to do a kneeslide when skating ramps/bowls/pools. Don't be afraid of getting hurt though. Everyone falls. Everyone gets hurt. That's just part of skateboarding.

with the vision agressor. would you say its easier to skate bowls with that old school board. or with a modern one?
