I don't get how people are actually defending the AOL Rep in here, saying Vince was rude. Regardless of his political affiliation, this has nothing to do with that. People complained for years about AOLs customer service. And he just exposed it, even if he was cursing up a storm, he has all the right in the world to be frustrated. He is the consumer, if he says cancel the account, then that's what the rep should do. Obviously he had 0 interest in keeping it.
There is nothing "polite" about this Vincent M. Ferrari. He is a notorious right-wing blogger ("insignificant thoughts" is the name of his site) from the Bronx. He intentionally targets and maligns decent people at his blog. Vincent M. Ferrari is an attention whore. This AOL was undoubtedly another of his attention-seeking stunts. "Cellular business"? He's in the misanthrope business. TRUST ME.. Ferrari has NO QUILT about getting the guy fired. GOOD GOIN' GMA Feed his fat ugly ego!
If that John guy got fired, I wouldn't be surprised if he tracked down this Vincent Ferrari and dealt with him in a brutal manner. Especially after embarrassing him on national television.
about a year ago when i upgraded to Verizon Fios I attempted to cancel my aol account. It took me talking to 5 different people before they would even acknowledge that i didn't want their gay service anymore. I hung up the phone and thought that would be the end of them. Next month on my cc statement it said 22.15 paid to aol! I called them and yelled at them like there was no tomorrow. I had to threaten to call my lawyer to get them to leave me the fuck alone
It's your own fault for having AOL. Right now I have att and it's shit. If I continue with these bastards after my contract it will be my fault for using them. I'll try to record my cancellation and post it here to see what kind of response it gets. heheh
Yah I have the same problems with the CSR's when I'm trying to social engineer user account information from them to take LEET sn's... it's shame it has to be this way.
yeah, they threaten my mom of the cancellation while upgrading for broadband....they say they won't receive more internet conection......what a excuxed
I know this happened 2 years ago, but I still feel bad for this CSR shmuck. Calls like this don't happen because a few individual CSR's are jerks, they happen because part of these CSR's job performance is based on how many canceling customers they retain.
Yes, this John guy could have handled himself better, but calls like this wouldn't exist without a corporate policy that confuses customer service with sales.
@hack451 When you go to work for the mafia, I don't think people should feel bad for you because your superiors are the ones telling you to throw bodies into the river.
i work myself in customer service..and there is no way around it.. if you try to save a customer, you get recorded and get fired...if you dont, the company records you and will get you fired..some people dont realize it isnt so much the reps but what the company that you work for...i do my saves attemps, if fails, i cancel..so far, i havent gotten intro problems but this guys "john" really pushed it too much...
Sounds to me like this customer care dude was trying to help a potential clueless customer. He saw that the account was being used, although the potential clueless customer kept insisting that he had not used it in a long time. Imagine the whining if the customer suddenly realized he needed the account for the internetz :p
Yea, Greatness would speak for itself and more People would keep it if AOL was decent.

I was a Compuserve customer from the late 80's to the late 90's; I had the same experience canceling my Compuserve after AOL bought them out. The phone rep was probably not fired but instead rewarded for following his training manual.

I had the same experience with Earthlink in 2006. I cancelled a dial-up account because Bellsouth DSL became available. I was on my car phone, told this woman I was in a high-traffic area on a cell phone, and she still persisted. Will you stay if this, will you stay if you get that free, etc. I said after 20 minutes just STFU and cancel the damn thing!!!
call center agent( me) i actually work in the retention department and this dude did go alittle over board, but if someone came at me with the way vincent did, i probably would have just killed him with kindness while cancelling the account, you dont resort to "can i speak to your dad" or " well it goes both ways my friend" that was crossing the line

Yhey couldnt understand why I was upset my monthly bill was over $300 for six months when I was on a $29 a month plan. Awesome vid.
"John" didn't have a choice. The average length of employment at a call center is less than a year -- they keep the threat of unemployment looming over everyone's heads just to keep them "motivated". They trained him for weeks about how they want him to interact with customers, they wrote scripts he had to follow, and they listened in on his calls.
"We regret customer service incidents like this". Bullshit.
fuck this vincent guy and fuck aol... they're trained to talk you out of canceling the account, they have a series of questions they have to ask you in order to cancel it, and trust me after dealing with douchebag, pissed off customers all day it gets to the point where you really don't give a fuck if you're fired or not. this vincent guy was kind of being an asshole, i bet you this guy was just trying to piss him off.
I'll tell you, in a way, I sympathize with the rep, even though he went too far. I didn't get it until I went to work in UPS's call center (I won't get into it though). When you're a call-center drone in some of these places, you're either damned if you do or damned if you don't. however, I NEVER had THIS level of problems with AOL. Yes, they have sweet-talked me into staying on a few more months, but if I was adamant on canceling the account, they canceled it! Period!
The main problem here is that had the customer service advisor cancelled the account at the first request he'd have probably been fired. Companies generally enforce an attitude of 'you will keep this customer or else' so he was screwed either way. I feel slightly sorry for the guy.
It's truly pathetic to see this aol company is still blatantly stealing from people. Those AOL FUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! stole over $400 from me. Its unbelievable that the government hasn't stopped this.
Sadly I used to work for AOL. Both me and my husband, and now my husband is in the military. Know this though, not all workers are bad, we get jobs for the same reason you do, to feed our families. I do not believe Ferrari or 'John' were either right. Both were at fault, and sadly for five minutes of fame people will do anything, just do not persecute the people who are not at fault. Not all of us are bad people.

you're a fucking asshole vincent ferrari. get a life. you were obviously looking to create some kind of lame situation. you were impolite to a working person trying to do his job. you're a first class prick
The real asshole is AOL for firing the working person just for doing what he was told. I don't think Vincent Ferrari intended for the guy to get fired ( though his response does seem a little callous), that was just AOL's response after hearing that the recording would air.
THIEVES! Stole my 200 dollars AFTER I CANCELLED. This apology is bullshit this company orderes their employees to rob and cheat customers that call to cancel. Then they fire one guy.
haha oh my gosh. i had that same problem. they tried everything. they even offered us 6 months free and then a year free. We kept saying "we're going to comcast. Cancel our AOL account". and finally they canceled it (after about an hour) and they were like "i guarentee you, you'll miss us because we are better than comcast." The guy who came out to hook it up, he got a huge laugh out of that. I can honestly say, I don't miss AOL and I will die before I go back to any other crappy Dialup Service.
I freaking HATE AOL. I got rid of them last year, and they gave us a hard time, and over charged us and didn't want to give it back. and they were rude to us over the phone, I should have recorded it.
This... the funny dell customer call... the Verizon representative not knowing the difference betwen 1 dollar and 1 cent... Pure gold! Very fun to hear!!! LOL

Liberal consumer laws have spoiled consumers and have pretty much decimated the economy. If we didn't have all these stupid slander and smear campaigns where liberals set up and frame honest companies, we would have more jobs, more money, more prosperity. Vote NO to unfair consumer laws. Vote YES to privatizing government so corporations can have a level playing field.
It's Rush Limbaugh and his merry band of corporate whores who thinks corps should be allowed to rape and pillage and extort and pollute and plunder and abuse to their hearts content. We need more LIBERAL laws to protect us from rapacious corps because the right wing extremists have all been bought off. LIBERALS are the only ones with an ounce of integrity and understand that what's good for GM is not necessarily good for America.
my dad cancelled aol last week. he was argueing with the guy for 15 minutes. lol, in the end my dad screamed at the guy enough that he got the account cancelled
Allegedly, AOL is run by the CIA. Look up the address for the headquarters of AOL and then look up the headquarters of the CIA, they are in the same area.
I work in AOL in Europe. its kind of funny when u get the English ringing up pissed off because they had been put through to one of the Branches in India. all they say is " ok i dont mean to sound racist or anything but really i can not understand a word those people are saying"

As a Republican and a stockholder, I am deeply offended by this OUTRIGHT LIBERAL would SLAM, SLANDER AND SMEAR a LAWFUL CORPORATION without ANY reason. He could come up with NOTHING as a reason for not liking the service. Liberal bias and liberal customers try to undermine businesses with their laws, their demands, their cowards way out. This is why shareholders and the economy suffer. As a business owner, thanks a lot liberals.
dude, that guy said straight up that he wanted to cancel the account that that aol guy kept harrassing him trying to get him to keep the account. a proper customer service conversation would have gone like this; "I would like to cancel my account" "Im sorry to hear that sir but I will get right on it" THE END
What does being a liberal have to do with customer service? If your a business owner I hope your customer service is better than this. More people need to record their interactions with customer service and start holding the companies accountable.
Because you shouldnt expect government laws to protect you from companies. You should just not do business with them. Laws and protections are a LIBERAL tool to tax and punish businesses and prevent them from being open and honest and free. If you dont have enough money to sue a company, thats your problem. Businesses shouldnt have to pay for your poor job performance by putting up with nitpicking consumer laws. This video is dangerous because it inspires liberal laws.
Wow, I am amazed that you really believe that. My comments though weren't about laws and being protected by them but about customer service and expecting GOOD customer service from companies. I can't see how this would inspire any new laws, but I could see how it would inspire AOL to take a long hard look at it's customer service practices and why everyone is complaining,it's an actual example of what everyone is complaining about.Your mixing it with liberals and inspiring new laws is off topic.
aol's firing 2000 more employees because no one uses them anymore. and the people who do use it will find their account terminated for saying something that could be taken wrong in a chatroom. i terminated free aol and they charged me $25. lmao now they're going for online advertising, they'll ruin that like everything else they do...
It took me over 15 minutes on the phone to cancel Sky TV - The woman kept asking what she could do to keep the service - asked her at leat 15 times to accept 30 days notice - lost me rag in the end and told her to shove the satellite dish where the sun don't shine. I know they are doing a crappy job coz I work in customer service and you have to follow the company rules - but surely this John guy was trying way too hard

what fat ass guy...poor john he was just doin his job, tryng to deal with a customer...wath a nasty an fat ass guy with a stupid name jajaj vincent ferrari, he just dont`n know the consecuences and the damage he did to a thousend of empoloyees with that fucking call...
The guy was trying to generate bigger bonuses for upper AOL management. He was a victim of greed run amuck. I don't mean to justify his actions ( I would have gone ape-sh!t and not have been as kind as vince ) however when you look at the bigger picture you can see the absolute arrogance of a large corporation that is desparate and will stop at nothing.
I HATE AOL! I just started a You Tube group called Badreps. It's to record frustrating encounters with customer service reps. Please join and put your recordings of poor customer service there.
I cancelled a couple years back, before this aired. It took 4 damn phone calls and no response still. I had to email them and name my lawyer to get it actually cancelled.
aol is horrible. they are constantly changing things for the worse. try to go to the sports page lately? or how about the mail. it is quicker to go to the post office. like i need to know that this means smile :) every time i log in. morons.
My mother tried to cancel her account when she moved to AOL 7... They started to charge her for AOL 6 and AOL 7 FFS!!!!
Thankfully, she used to be a barrister and does know the law a lot better than those fuckups and she sued them rather than just get her account canceled.
well i am 19 years old and an aol customer consultant and all i can say is that it sucks to be an AOL member so the best thing to do is find a separate high-speed or dial-up internet service provider then call 888-265-8003 to switch your paid plan to free or totally cancel the account. =) by the way, say the word "Cancellation" to the computer so that you will be automatically led to a consultant.
When I cancelled my account I had to write a letter to them for them to stop charging my credit card. WHY??? All it took for them to start charging me was a simple phone call. DON'T USE THEM!!!
The representatives you speak to at AOL is really not their fault. It's really the big wigs that force them to do this. Fuck them. I've seen this happened.
LOL I hate those guys. My mom and dad still ahve AOL and they are cancelling soon I'll make sure to record it. Furthermore, in UK the indian guys are like 'Are you sure?" im like 'omg yes!!! im sure just do it please'
ALL AOL EMPLOYEES NEED TO BE KILLED. F*ck you AOL, you scum bags. If i ever became unbalanced, AOL offices would be the first. I would take the CEO, pour gas on his face, light it, and put it out with an ice pick. Same goes for all the AOL employees. F*ck up blueprint18. The guy had a choice to work there.
f*#kit Loser.......stop complainin'.... Aols doin reli good...... who care bout the opinion of a bunch of losers like ya'll...... FYI..im workin wit AOL nw..ass!!!!
That is the stupidest thing that AOL could do... We tried to cancel our accounts, and almost the same thing happened to us. Here's a question: are men or women worse at AOL when it comes to canceling your account? we got a woman.
These Americans should try and get on the phone to British Telco's. They keep you on hold for up to an hour (even more with NTL!)
Iv'e had customer service reps try to keep me as a customer before, but I think Vincent was rude. All the AOL guy was doing was collecting some information as to why their customers leave. They all do it! I think Vincent was impatient and I'm annoyed that the guy at AOL got fired for doing his job!
He was at the begining but then when he started to treat him like a kid and told him "it was in his best interest to keep the account" he went to far.
if I were him I would have just said "I just want to cancel it..." They can be asses, really. Before they made it free, they actually increased my plan from the 10.95 to the 24.95 plan...and all I get is a "sorry"
Here is something I figured out watching this interview. Everyone has the same problem trying to cancel AOL. That tells me that AOL has policies in place to make it hard to cancel the account. So, they fire the employee when he follows what AOL told him to do? AOL should just admit that they are a bunch of money-grubbing jerks and be done with it.
I feel sorry for John, he was just trying to do his do on the best side, but I agree he overreact after the guy who tried to cancel the account repeated 3 times in a row and Jhon kept trying to talk to him instead of actually canceling his account.
After all, it's a good lesson for other customer-support staff to learn when you pass the red line you should STOP, and not continue with the annoynace.
Here's the deal, even if they did cancel they more often then not start charges back up after a month or so, I to cancelled and have already been charged for over two years of use wjile I pay for my RR Service AOL still charges me every month, it's common and not much is being done about it. Check out the thousands of people online who claim this is being done to them too
It is clearly criminal, it's theft plain and simple.
Well im currenty with aol broadband uk and they offered me a free wirless router since i hvae been with them for over 4 years now. Not once has the connection disconnected and always speed are good enough. The customer service is pretty bad and so is thre software .Overall 3/5
As a previous AOL user, I understand Vincent's pain. I recall trying to cancel after 7 years and the man on the other end was anything but helpful. It took me 25 minutes to cancel and it was the most stressful situation I have ever been through. As an Executive Assistant with a major corporation I am skillful at handling clients, but boy, they were really a test of my skills. Never again, not even if they were the only provider left on the face of this earth. BOYCOTT AOL !!!!

Bullshit.
davevontexas 3 years ago
i get you. "John" was just trying to help the company by hanging on to a customer and he got his ass kicked out pronto. So much for loyalty.

fuck this vincent guy and fuck aol... they're trained to talk you out of canceling the account, they have a series of questions they have to ask you in order to cancel it, and trust me after dealing with douchebag, pissed off customers all day it gets to the point where you really don't give a fuck if you're fired or not. this vincent guy was kind of being an asshole, i bet you this guy was just trying to piss him off.

Period!

why did they fired the guy, they should sue the company for having those rules for the employees, like -hold the client no matter what
puationstation 3 years ago
The main problem here is that had the customer service advisor cancelled the account at the first request he'd have probably been fired. Companies generally enforce an attitude of 'you will keep this customer or else' so he was screwed either way. I feel slightly sorry for the guy.
Lose lose situation for him.

How old is this? I thought AOL was history. Like Christian television they must be exploiting old people or something.

Not all of us are bad people.

you're a fucking asshole vincent ferrari. get a life. you were obviously looking to create some kind of lame situation. you were impolite to a working person trying to do his job. you're a first class prick
mnels113 3 years ago
The real asshole is AOL for firing the working person just for doing what he was told. I don't think Vincent Ferrari intended for the guy to get fired ( though his response does seem a little callous), that was just AOL's response after hearing that the recording would air.

dimagu1 3 years ago 2
haha oh my gosh. i had that same problem. they tried everything. they even offered us 6 months free and then a year free.

It's easier just to report your credit card lost and get a new one. AOL will keep charging you, even if you cancel your account.
It's a good idea to replace your credit cards a few times a year.

LatteLiberal 4 years ago
dude, that guy said straight up that he wanted to cancel the account that that aol guy kept harrassing him trying to get him to keep the account. a proper customer service conversation would have gone like this; "I would like to cancel my account" "Im sorry to hear that sir but I will get right on it" THE END

What does being a liberal have to do with customer service? If your a business owner I hope your customer service is better than this. More people need to record their interactions with customer service and start holding the companies accountable.
Jimstock601 4 years ago
Because you shouldnt expect government laws to protect you from companies. You should just not do business with them. Laws and protections are a LIBERAL tool to tax and punish businesses and prevent them from being open and honest and free. If you dont have enough money to sue a company, thats your problem. Businesses shouldnt have to pay for your poor job performance by putting up with nitpicking consumer laws. This video is dangerous because it inspires liberal laws.
LatteLiberal 4 years ago
Wow, I am amazed that you really believe that. My comments though weren't about laws and being protected by them but about customer service and expecting GOOD customer service from companies. I can't see how this would inspire any new laws, but I could see how it would inspire AOL to take a long hard look at it's customer service practices and why everyone is complaining,it's an actual example of what everyone is complaining about.Your mixing it with liberals and inspiring new laws is off topic.

Iv'e had customer service reps try to keep me as a customer before, but I think Vincent was rude. All the AOL guy was doing was collecting some information as to why their customers leave. They all do it! I think Vincent was impatient and I'm annoyed that the guy at AOL got fired for doing his job!

dena81 5 years ago
Here is something I figured out watching this interview. Everyone has the same problem trying to cancel AOL. That tells me that AOL has policies in place to make it hard to cancel the account. So, they fire the employee when he follows what AOL told him to do? AOL should just admit that they are a bunch of money-grubbing jerks and be done with it.
Beachdude67 5 years ago
That's so funny
I feel sorry for John, he was just trying to do his do on the best side, but I agree he overreact after the guy who tried to cancel the account repeated 3 times in a row and Jhon kept trying to talk to him instead of actually canceling his account.
After all, it's a good lesson for other customer-support staff to learn when you pass the red line you should STOP, and not continue with the annoynace.
Shaye87 5 years ago
Here's the deal, even if they did cancel they more often then not start charges back up after a month or so, I to cancelled and have already been charged for over two years of use wjile I pay for my RR Service AOL still charges me every month, it's common and not much is being done about it. Check out the thousands of people online who claim this is being done to them too
