This is really great, but I still like what she has been doing the last few years better. It's now less "look at me" and more craftsmanship and interpretation. Yes, her high notes aren't as high now and the tone quality of the high ones is not as rich as it was, but overall I like it better now. Less fireworks and more what I come to music for. With very few singers do I come back and back to the same arias the way I do with Natalie Dessay.
The composer is Reinhold Gliére, born in Kiev, Ukraine. And this version is incomparable! She's actually singing an ossia here, which as far as I've heard, nobody does...bars 139 to 154, and the high F at the end, optional as well. Bravissima!!!
@qyzuf I think Natalie has taken surgery on her vocal chords twice. Before surgery she could sing very high (up to A-flat6) but after surgery her high notes became very unpleasant and her coloratura abilities are strained. This recording is BEFORE surgery. You can compare for example THIS with watch?v=Pt59eyLPiY4

In the very good CD "Vocalises" Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester Michael SCHONWANDT, Natalie Dessay takes the last note to the end with the orchestra :-)

@Kivimusic Why did she have surgery?
Tulsasparty565 1 year ago
@Tulsasparty565 She had vocal fold nodules (Wikipedia :D), they had to be removed. Sorry for responding so late. :D

@Tugoles Gliere'! anything by Gliere'! and who else composed for the pure voice in this fashion?

Dessay had birdlike agility at this period as this performance reveals. A soprano need not attempt this piece without perfect staccati and trills.
