I've got a board with the same problem. Right after you click upload, hit reset immediately on your board. I didn't have a lot of luck with the IDE everytime i hit upload. However, when I compile a c program using winAvr and then use AVRdude to upload the program, the same method works very well.
Actually with the newest batch of mega's there was an incorrect cap placed on the reset line of the ftdi chip. once replaced with the correct size everything works fine.
Right, nice to know since I just got an Arduino Mega.
My diagnosis of broken serial output was due to the fact that this is how my Duemilanove behaved after I had misconnected the serial output breaking it. ;P
Yes. You have fried your hardware serial.
I have the same problem. Now I'm looking for a way to use software serial instead.
