XFCE has more than caught up with Gnome usage wise, it's just so much better in how it manages resources.
You reckon i could run this on a PII machine with 280MB RAM and have it be usable? I ran the Ubuntu live CD on it but it was pretty laggy, maybe due to the CD writer.
@THEREALghostlaced What it does not have? Pulseaudio for startes (only ALSA), actual Compiz support and a useful file manager. But meh I can swap Thunar with nautilus anyway and run Compiz after a few commands, but I chose not to.
The thing is, you can always change an Ubuntu install to Xubuntu by installing the xubuntu-desktop package. It will install the XFCE desktop environment and other packages selected by the Xubuntu team. And if you want to go really lightweight with your setup, try something like Fluxbox, IceWM, or other minimal window manager. Still, XFCE is pretty nice for a full-fledged environment.
@frvfilms ...Linux can be light or heavy, whatever you need or desire. There will never be an ultimate distro. Everybody has a different idea about what is the best. Pick the one you like that has the software, support, and package management you prefer. After that, just have fun!
what is the difference? which one is the best xubuntu or ubuntu?

One of the greatest drawback of ubuntu is that it is slow. ubuntu 64-bit is even slower than xp 32 bit. I wonder if I should give xubuntu a try
cxjiek 1 year ago
The 64 should be installed only if you have at least 4 GB ram.
Crisshomes1 5 months ago
@Crisshomes1 oo, I had 2 GB RAM, but according to the task manager, it didn't use up that much.
cxjiek 5 months ago
It doesn't matter.
Any x64 arhitecture need at least 4GB Ram despite if its used or not.
Thats why its slower if you don't .
Crisshomes1 5 months ago
@Crisshomes1 Ic, but why is that so?
cxjiek 5 months ago
Do some research on x64/64bit arhitecture and the limits of x86/32bit which will soon be a thing of the past.
Since most computers will have at least 4GB because of games, app and user demands.
Crisshomes1 5 months ago
@Crisshomes1 Alright, I'm lazy to do research, all I know is 64-bit let people have more than the 4GB limit in 32-bit.
cxjiek 5 months ago
And if you have less than 4GB,the system will be slower instead of faster.

why does xcfe look so much like gnome?
videogamegod88 2 years ago
@videogamegod88 It's because both are based on the same toolkit (GTK+2), so applications that work in GNOME will work just the same in Xfce.

I love XFCE. I have a fairly new 1 year old Lenovo laptop and I like to conserve its processing energy wherever possible.
