  • People who want to expose and fight against Political Correctness will have to brainstorm on how to win that war on a psychological front, because that is where it has been winning. We can't say anything anymore because we're so mixed up it's bound to offend someone or at least someone taking offense on their behalf. So how to speak freely without facing the whip of Cultural Marxism?

  • We Canadians, we don't have the basic right to offend anyone. This is schocking but true unless you have 100K to spend like Ezra or Mark Steyn....

  • Why can't all Canadians have this opinion??

  • Rex is one of the few that gets is when it comes to real rights and laws. and calls politically correct b.s. when he sees it....Islam, which isnt a race btw, but a constitution and ideology wrapped in religious gift wrapping....is anti free speech, anti human rights, anti tolerant (when their numbers are sufficent to demand it) and anti womens lib.....but they will use free speech, human rights commissions, and the extreme left to propegate and move their cause forward....

  • Well said, Rex.

  • Islam is not a race, it's a religion!

A religion is an Idea, it is not someone's race!!

Ideas can be debated, critiqued, and debated.!

We live in a democracy, we have freedom of speech!

    GO REX MURPHY!

  • Thumbs up if you think Rex Murphy is the best thing about CBC.

  • @wheelzwheela I totally agree

  • @wheelzwheela : Donald Duck could be the best thing about the CBC if you compare the CBC with anything.. Saying Murphy is the best about the CBC is not much of a compliment to Murphy. It's like saying the best thing about a turd is the stink.

  • Rex murphy is the man!

  • The Charter, which inshrines the freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression is the highest law of the land and it trumps all fedearl law including section 13 of the "Human Rights Act of 1977".

There is no such thing as the right not to be offended

  • I'm offended at all the comments made about this video and will be hauling all your asses before the human rights commission.

  • Rex for PM!

  • My God! First it's a Jew. And a Christian. Now a Newfie. Don't these pecker heads realize that if we can race libel Muslims that they're next. Right wing racist rants are a gateway "drug" to the hard stuff. The Holocaust was the end result of a bunch of right wing racists race libeling and advocating hatred towards identifiable groups. If right wing Canadians continue to breach the hate literature section of the Criminal Code of Canada (an indictable offense) Muslims WILL BE TARGETED FOR DEATH.

  • @eureka830ify You are not smart at all.

  • Thank you Rex for saying what we all are thinking!

SUPPORT FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN CANADA!

If we want to bash Islam, we should be allowed to without being brought to court!

  • You tell 'em Rex

  • you go rex. maybe we can make cuts to human rights commision, put it into health care or something, their just taking on these cases to keep their jobs, to keep busy.

  • Rex is very smart but I don't get his statement at 1:32 about the Osgoode law students.

Can someone explain that to me ? Is that a reference to law students.

  • @TimeGod12 In 2007 and 2008, Muslim students at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto worked with the Canadian Islamic Congress in the attempt to punish Maclean's magazine by filing complaints with the Canadian and Ontario Human Rights Commissions and the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal. One of the students (Mr. Khurrum Awan) even appeared as a witness against Maclean's during a hearing of B.C.'s Human Rights Tribunal in 2008. But in the end, the Muslim campaign against Maclean's failed.

  • @RFranklinCarter thanks

  • Not sure about Rex. He writes a column for the biggest Zionist news conglomerate in Canada.

  • If people don't wake, up islam will succeed in turning the west into another hell hole, just like it did to every other place where islam is the majority.

  • @gungnir2357 Its going on in Europe right now. Civil wars within 15 years I think.

  • @YiuTeub Perhaps yes. Do you think that Europeans still have enough spine to defend their cultures from total obliteration? I hope so. But based on what I've seen, I'm not too optimistic. Perhaps you have a different perspective if you live in Europe?

  • I am deeply offended!!!...oh wait..is that..ok try again....I am deeeply offensive!!!...thats better...yup...I have offended myself and I am now calling the cops on....you guessed it...me!!...oh just wait until I stand before the AHRC, BCHRC and the CHRC....ohhhh I am really going to squirm....just wait till I connfess and finger myself for Thought Crime again and again and again and again....oh I am screwed now!!!!!...I wonder how much I will award myself....

  • What?

Now THAT is offensive. I just cant take it.

I am going to haul you up in front the HUMAN RIGHTS council for offending me. The mere idea that you would offend yourself is so utterly offensive to me I think you should be given 100 lashes, and told NEVER to offend yourself again!

  • My feelings were hurt and I was offended by this video.....how much money can I get from Barb Hall and the Ont Human Rights Com.?

  • Oh the hypocrisy of the the islamic world. It will never end.

  • well said.

  • Canadians are always a little slow to catch on.

  • @rrk10 I'm sorry you'll have to slow down.. What is it you said?

  • This guy may be the only liberal i've ever agreed with.

  • rex murphy is the only voice of reason at the liberal TAX FUNDED cbc.

  • Islamism is clearly a threat to liberal values. But liberals side with islamists often.

  • Politics make strange bedfellows

  • Before long we don't stop these infringements on our rights, we will become like the shit holes countries in the ME.

  • @Ramshobraja almost... but you're conflating classic liberals with modern "liberals"... who really aren't liberals at all.

  • @RustyIronloins Youre so right

  • @Ramshobraja Liberals number one goal is lookign smarter then others while having no real value, morals or content to their argments,. They see a terrorist attack, the raping of child, the molestation of a child and they side with the perp, WHY? Because theya re contrarians, they love appearing to be the minority and love pretending to be white knights for minorities, gays, woman, blacks etc.

  • Hear, hear. Muslims come to western countries to abuse our laws and freedoms in order to twist them to their own nasty purposes. It's against "human rights" to publish or say something that offends Muslim sensibilities, but I don't see Muslim countries correcting their horrid human-rights abuses. They will use the doctrine of multiculturalism to get away with their bad behaviour in the west, and as a way of eroding/destroying Western values, but Mulsim countries are notoriously anti-MC.

  • Why do we consider someone who believes in fairy tales 'fair game' for ridicule, but not someone who believes in a magical space daddy waiting around to party with their ghost?

  • islaam is just another example of violation of human rights.Women are treated like animals and men are treated like gods in islaam.if anyone looks thoroughly muslims are very backward because of their rules and regulation of islaam

  • Funny. Go back during the Crusades and before, the Arab world was more advanced than the European world because the Arabs were influenced by the philosophies of the Greeks and Romans. I wonder what happened.

  • ya for a about 10 seconds now what has happened they are back in the fucking stoneage

  • No, the Arab world was more advanced than the European world during the middle ages until the Turks took over and fucked up everything. I blame the Ottoman Empire for everything that has happened, especially when under the Young Turks. Fucking Young Turks.

  • Rex, I am not a big fan of yours.. actually I have some real problems with what you say.. but you hit the nail on the head with this one! I might just have to give you 2nd chance...

  • Is freedom of speech really free if it excludes the right to hate? I think not. People are entitled to their opinions and prejudices and should be allowed to express them freely. Not only is it their right to speak, but it is everyone else's right to listen!

Rex is pretty fun to listen to!

  • Comment removed

  • so what happens to the rapist? shouldnt they get punished tooo

  • that is pretty common in saudi arab

  • It would have been wonderful if all of Abraham´s children had remained in their respective Promised lands or Meccas or whatever. If they could have just kept their two thousand year old feud confined to the Middle East the rest of us would all be so much happier. Back to reality. Before we admit boatloads of these folk it might be wise to look at how they behave towards each other back home because very few leopards have ever changed their spots.

  • Right on....Someone who finially gets it...and gets it right...Instead of the weak and twisted crap that is being spread like a disease......

  • Fuck this is RIGHT ON! Go Rex!

  • If a cartoon was drawn with Hitler being praised, you can just imagine the crap storm that would ensue. We need to stop being so one-sided or hypocritical.

  • how can you declare hypocrisy when it hasn't happened to the same magnitude as this bullshit?

  • Well that's my point. Nobody DARES draw a cartoon of Hitler otherwise the ADL will have a field day with that publisher.

  • You are right, but you're comparing two different figures. One is a totalitarian leader who harmed a lot of people, many whom migrated here for their safety. The other is a religious prophet mostly worshiped by a demographic of immigrants who came here mostly because of mere dissatisfaction of their life back home. Further, the comics depicted were published in Denmark to address Islamphobia, not perpetuate it. Also look @ The Producer's "Springtime for Hitler". Not the reaction that you think..

  • Well first of all, you're wrong, he's not 'worshipped', he's revered. Secondly, I would love for you to explain how a bomb in the turban of a rather hostile looking prophet is supposed to be perceived as critical of Islamophobia. Thirdly, the song 'Springtime for Hitler' portrayed an angry ex-Nazi who is ridiculed. The premise of the play is NOT to empathize Nazis.

  • With respect to the second point: I can easily explain it: the words in the article corresponding with the image (amongst a dozen other Islamophobic images). Just because the image is hostile doesn't mean the intent of the publishing is hostile.

The reason why this "issue" spun into "controversy" is because people lost focus over why the images were published in Denmark and why Levant did it as well, while the NY Times didn't.

  • Well, according to your logic, Levant and the publishers in Denmark did it for two different reasons. Denmark supposedly did it to be critical of Islamophobia, whereas Levant did it to add fuel to the fire. Any reasonable person understands Levant's real intentions with regard to these kinds of issues: His thinly-disguised attempts of advocating free speech covering his true intentions;namely, Islamophobia.

  • You're wrong. Levant did it to exercise his free speech. He has stated that over and over and over. It is completely different. Any reasonable person can understand that.

  • You illustrate the point of having free speech perfectly: not one person can say what is acceptable in a political debate.

And BTW, our hate speech legislation is the mockery of the free world. It is vague, overly broad, and goes a long ways towards creating a police state where thought control is tolerated.

"Hate speech" has a specific definition. It was not remotely close to being met in this Murphy bit. To understand what "hate speech" is, you must be familiar with common law.

  • People have the right to say what they believe, or publish it.

How can there be an organization that anyone can complain to at no cost to themselves that causes a publisher to lose significant amounts of money. It's a revenge mechanism for those who disagree. It also discourages publishers from, as Murphy says, stirring debate or publishing anything remotely worthwhile.

  • cantaloupe42 - On Ernst Zundel Rex Murphy, instead of showing unconditional support for Ernst Zundel's right to freedom of speech, he said:"If Ernst Zündel is a refugee, Daffy Duck is Albert Einstein." He may not get offers as Media ownership is controlled --he succed up to Macleans. Conflict of interest:In his keynote address, at a dinner of the Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy: "the fact that the goals and ideals of democracy are maintained in Israel is a beacon in itself."

  • Oh, so he should have "sucked up" to CAIR-Canada instead? That would make him a fine fellow then?

    Dweeb!

  • I agree with you about Zundel. I have seen too much evidence and heard to many witnesses to believe that the holocaust never happened. There is little doubt that it did. Never the less Zundel should be allowed to deny it anyways. It sets a bad precedence. People should be allowed to speak their minds with honesty. Skepticism is a key component of progress.

Besides, a real Nazi wouldn't deny the holocaust, a real Nazi would take pride in thier achievements.

  • Trouble is with Holocaust deniers, they say it didn't happen, claim it's really happening to them then cry and say that too bad Hitler didn't finish the job and got rid of those lousy Jews and capitalists.

  • Hey, I'm as Islamophobic as the next guy but you have to take Mark Steyn with a grain of salt lest you fall victim to more Jewish-Zionist brainwashing.

I read his article in Maclean - The future is theirs.

If his demography is correct them our best hope is that Muslims go the way of the Africans and just starve to death.

His article was a little creepy though.I would become the worst villian in history before I would see North America Islamofied.

I may believe in God but I hate all religion

  • I always listen to this teRex,he has capability of blowing hot & cold in same huff & puff.

By listening to his each episode, you still can't make sense about he is actually taking side with.

That's what is about presenting a crucial tough subject to come in your attention, and sets your mind role in brain masturbation.

  • Those motherfuckers in the Canadian media are getting a taste of their own bullshit. They have been pushing political correctness on us for so long and now its backfiring on them. Hypocrites!

I watched CBC Sunday Night tonight and it drove me into a near violent rage. The thought that legislators or NGO's in this country think that they have the right to determine what what I am allowed to express makes me hate what Canada has come to stand for!

    - A True Canadian

  • Man, I usually don't like Rex Murphy that much, but he's bang on here. This whole thing is like a bad fucking joke, there are no 'two sides' to this one. I'm glad to see he didn't equivocate on it with typical Canadian politeness. This is nothing less than a national embarrassment.

  • Cantaloupe42,

In the case of Ernst Zundel-- Rex Murphy, takes an exception; instead of showing unconditional support for Ernst Zundel's right to freedom of speech, he made the following comment during Ernst Zundel's court hearing to fight deportation to Germany where he faced prison for Holocaust denial: "If Ernst Zündel is a refugee, Daffy Duck is Albert Einstein." The above shows that Rex Murphy believes in free speech when it is used by like mided people -- Islamophobes bigots, racists.

  • Yeah no surprise there. He can't be seen defending a holocaust denier, he would lose his job. Although to be fair, Ernst Zundel is a far cry from some tame Macleans article, but still should be allowed to spout whatever crackpot bullshit he likes (short of incitements to violence of course). I don't see why you think he's an 'Islamophobe' (god I hate that word), or a racist though. What has he said that's racist?

  • 1) Why implicate those who complained against Maclean's with issues overseas? Why ask minorities to jump through arbitrary hoops to defend themselves?

    2) As far as I know the basis of the complaint was that the students wanted to publish a counter article of equal quality, which was denied.

3)Finally, the atrocities against minorities in various countries started with propoganda. By not allowing for a counter article of equal quality Maclean's is supporting propoganda against a minority.

  • Rex Murphy, the only sensible person on the CBC.

  • Rex Murphy is the resident bogot who just happens to be defending his ideological comrades. He is no champion of free speech as his record shows concerning a prominent free speech case concerning Earnest Zundel-- Rex Murphy, instead of showing unconditional support Earnest Zundel's right to freedom of speech, he made the following comment: "If Ernst Zündel is a refugee, Daffy Duck is Albert Einstein." You would expect unequivocal support for Zundel's right to free speech ... hypocracy!

  • Rex Murphy is the resident bigot who just happens to be defending his ideological comrades.

  • What does that statement have to do with free speech? I don't know the case of which you speak, but what you have provided says nothing. It sounds to me like Rex is questioning this fellow's legitimacy as a refugee, not his right to free speech.

To call him the "resident bigot" kind of shows you up anyway I'm afraid. Just because he doesn't spout the same tired old leftist arguments doesn't automatically make him a bigot.

Bigot: A conservative winning an argument with a liberal.

  • Or hey, try being a homosexual in Iran.

  • Muslims in Canada are the bigots. They hate free speech.

  • Mark Steyn's America Alone is at York University but I think somebody hid it. It's nowhere to be found. Osgoode University happens to be at York btw. Don't know if that's a coincidence.

  • You can afford to buy one if you are a supporter of Mark Steyn-- help him make him some money.

  • This show was pretty much about Book launch,Mark wants to get fame on his pipsqueak rants :)

Two wars have been sold on this kind of false propaganda, With due respect for Mark he is trying to sell 2nd hand car, I mean he is trying to resell "clash of civilization propaganda".

Declining population of west was foreseen long time ago, Bertrand Russell had written about it in 1954.

Just reading Title from cover,I can say this Book is 1* on scale of 2-10 :)

  • So you read the title, and scored the entire book 1 out of 10? You could work for a human rights commission!

  • Yep!

Pretty much what is being promoted for sell like a 2nd hand car is, neocon rodent media hypes of so called clash of civilization.

Class on interests between East & West was foreseeable quite a while ago.

Exploitation of resources & economy by west was so eminent, that B. Russell had pointed it out in mid 50's.

Mark, Ezra & Geert thugs want to sell hypes of pre-War propaganda again.

Iran & Iraq wars are in winding down phase, there is nothing much to sell in the name of moslem bashing :)

  • It's not "muslim bashing", it's about the jihadists whose favourite cry to war is "death to America", and just because certain things happened "pre-war" doesn't mean they can't happen again. Freedom of the press is not just a "neocon" issue. Just because you disagree with those being persecuted at the moment doesn't mean it doesn't effect you!

Don't count on those wars being in the "winding down" phase either.

  • "forgetfulmuse"

You said "the jihadists whose favourite cry to war is "death to America".

That is exactly what freedom of association, freedom of speech is all about.

It could be flagrantly optimistic to call "death to America" or Al-Aqsa or death slogans.

But, Why would you want to support bombing of unarmed Civilians for very same thought crime?

  • Calling for the death of a nation is hardly the same as publishing some cartoons (which didn't call for anyone's death) or writing a book that, in summary, is about demographics and, whether you believe it or not, the Islamo-political threat to Western civilization. Steyn's book is not a call to war so much as a call to resistance. Have you actually read it for yourself?

    continued...

  • I find your use of the word "optimistic" curious, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. In your reasoning, we should have sat back and left Hitler to his "free speech".

  • forgetfulmuse wrote: "In your reasoning, we should have sat back and left Hitler to his "free speech".

But you are siding with Mark steyn 'saying, we should sit back and leave Mark Steyn and the neocons to their "free speech" to persue their facist agenda against Syria and Iran who happen to be the only countries who can resist the Apartheid state of Israel. the fact is that the invasion of Iraq is a War crimes which means that all those who participated should be tried for war crimes.

  • Look, if you think you can exercise free speech in Iran, go for it dude. Quit throwing words like "fascist" and "bigot" around when you obviously have little idea of their meanings. If you want "fascist", try criticizing Islam inside Syria or Iran - yet in America, a country founded on Judeo-Christian values, you can piss on a Bible and call it art without fear of violent consequences. You might even get a write-up in the NY Times!

  • So what you're saying is, a bunch of Islamofascists can scream "DEATH TO AMERICA!" but Mark Steyn can't write a book to counter that, then you talk about free speech and call conservatives hypocrits. That's what's known as muddled thinking and doublespeak. Go do your grade 6 reading (1984, Animal Farm).

  • forgetfulmuse sounds like his alter ego, Ezra Levant with the scream about the Islamofascists. It is Mutual cursing as the Zionists all over the world do scream the same "death to Muslims". Have you not heared what the Zionists say about the Muslims, Arabs and any one who opposes their occupation of palestine? The only diffrence is that the Zionist wield power that can invade and destroy country like Iraq; while pushing for the same against Syria, Iran - and people of Gaza are being tormented.

  • Wow, I sound like Ezra Levant! Thanks for the compliment.

  • If anyone needs to be censored, which I am against, it's Jew hating, islamofascist garbage like you. Iran has vowed to annihilate Israel, I guess you agree, you termite. Garbage like you shouldn't be allowed to live in free countries, yet I am willing to allow even your trash to go uncensored. Iswrael is a million time better than Syria or Iran, I wish you would ship your worthless butt over to them.

  • Is that your excuse for censorship? Even if you were right, which you aren't, it still doesn't excuse censorship. It's people like you that build contempt for so called progressives when you shut down your opposition with the laws. If you can't debate, shut up!

  • I remember the easter Issue of MacLean's had a picture of Jesus on the cover and said "Jesus has an identity crisis" with a series of labels, all of which questioned his divinity. Then said, "happy easter" - some may see this as offensive. But nothing came of it. Christians complained, but didn't demand equal time in the mag, or bring them to any HRC...Radical Islam keeps proving its critics true. A danger to the west. Talk about Irony.

  • Well said Rex. People need to get a handle on western culture and adapt. My parents survived the transition from European values to Canadian. Even learnt the language. They also developed a sense of humour. Osgoode Hall needs to reign in some students and go after real social issues.

  • Disgraceful.

It's not only the fact that these people are hauled into HRC's, it's the THREAT that they could be. Think, if you were a newspaper columnist, after seeing this, you probably would err on the side of caution and not write anything offensive to try to avoid being hauled into the star chamber. The bottom line is they don't need to haul you in to chill free speech, for they have already made an example of macleans. FOR SHAME.

  • Coexistence of West and Islam will not be found unless we respect each others views and views of expression. We don't need to issue complaints or Fatwas we need to respect opinions that may offend us in the name of human discourse.

  • The problem is that Islam: decries the killing of those who leave Islam, does not believe in pluralism nor basic human rights for women. The more I learn about Islam, the more I believe that Islam and Western values and culture are mutually exclusive.

  • One aspect which you may not know is, west is guilt based society, perhaps it wouldn't be any thing which could insult in present day culture.

Getting stoned or bombed and killed wouldn't or may not get back to you as revenge.

Name calling, insult or shameful act done to an Eastern person can haunt you for your generations to come.

Trust me on that one,my friend!

  • But it's okay that Arab and Muslim countries demonize Jews in a way that would warm a Nazi's heart or violently attack religious minorities after they hear the call to war at prayers? Their claims of being offended might be received better if they weren't such brutal bigots themselves. It would be like a Klansman crying about negative Southern stereotypes.

  • from this, i can make a point that canada is going to be fucked up very soon

  • So, by what values and principles do you want to live by Canada (and every other western, democratic coutry for that matter)? It's being put to you, now, you know.

  • Stop Thought Police!!!

    This is really happening..

    And it`s sickening!!!

    dhimmi`s = idiot!!!

  • Freedom of expression under attack in Canada - New video tribute to free-speech hero Arthur Topham uploaded to profile:.."free speech is for everyone!"

  • Rex, as usual, tells it like it is. Bravo.
