This voice must be listened "live"! I have assisted to 3 performances of Rigoletto and 3 of Nabucco with him in the main rol, in different theatres, and it was amazing! One of the biggest Rigolettos and Nabucco!
This video does not show Gavanelli's Rigoletto at anywhere near its best. I would urge detractors to look up his 1994 video of this scene here on YouTube, from the production with Sumi Jo.
For the one who wrote that comment: "very limited voice.": I'm coming from a rehearsal with him right now this moment and his voice is far from limited, not in range nor in diversity nor in dynamic. Shame on you: insulting such a worthy man and artist.
Many of those here who bash him are young, according to their profile. Maybe if you are extremely gifted, and dedicate your life to opera, you can treat the world to something really special? You don't need to sound like Warren or Bastianni to have greatness. If all baritones did, what would be the point?
I have sung with Paolo in Boccanegra. He was astonishing! Much of his uniqueness isn't translated on recording. Perhaps much of the reason people don't always appreciate him is their inability to hear his uncommon musicianship and the pathos which should be stirred in those who are fortunate to see and hear him.
Realbasso is right! I have seen Paolo live in concert several times and his performances always give me goosebumps. He has a warm, generous, and passionate stage presence and gets totally immersed in the character. His Rigoletto really has to be seen to be appreciated, it is just masterful.
is this a joke ? Annoyingly fast vibrato, poor acting(he's about as scary as my grandmother), dull voice.....the fact that he's one of today's leading baritones is sad.
He does have a dull voice. I agree with that, but I like his interpretation. I don't find his acting bad at all. Most Rigolettos I find to not have the acting skills required for the part, and Gavanelli is one of the few who does. I don't see why he *has* to be scary.
At this point in the opera, all the contempt and hatred he has always felt towards the courtiers and the duke fuse with the immense desire to protect his daughter and make this seemingly pathetic hunchback into a frenzied "animal". It has to be the scariest transformation. I have seen it done better. This is only my opinion, I respect if you beg to differ.
PS: I agree that most Rigolettos cannot act the part as it should be acted. It might be the most demanding Verdi baritone role of them all.
Bravo Paolo !!

I saw him in Rigoletto with Anna Netrebko at the ROH in 2005 (if I remember correctly).
He moved me so much with this aria...

I can't stand this voice, it is really acrid to me. It is the Baritone equivalent of Mara Zampieri...
