Firstly, forgive me for my BAAAD English (even if i don't have to be sorry,...). I just want to say that i was happy to see someone in our times talking about "leaving a foot print" ( it have to bee an usefull foot print) in a socity where the majority are not thinking about what they will add in this world before being in the other (so don't be scarried when you think about dying, to Die don't mean to disappear but to be in another world, maybe we can talk about it later)
I have a nitpick... I don't think you can peg fear of mediocrity as a human universal. That's a pretty capitalistic fear. Some humans living in South America probably yearn for riches, but their fear isn't not being excellent, it's surviving corruption. And in socialist countries with more parity there is much less emphasis on personal achievement because the government levels the playing field so well. Hopefully that was an eye opener. If I misunderstood, feel free to say so.
@Dingdongficebell no it's just getting what is most coveted/unattainable in each society. like, if you live in a super socialist 1984 style society, you want to be the best at conforming, the most obedient and conformist. also, people in south american countries do ultimately want to be excellent, it's just that surviving corruption is such a much more feasible and immediate goal that often their thoughts do not stray so far.
My mom once accidentally slammed a door shut on her thumb and this door was no normal door. It was extremely heavy. She lost so much blood very quickly she practically fainted and my dad had to carry her to the car.
I have insectophobia but I don't know if that would count as shallow or deep fear, because I swear I panic when I see one.
@jkstification i think animals definitely realize it on an innate level. maybe they dont have 'im going to die' panic attacks like i do, but all instincts are are a way of staying alive, so clearly they know on some level that they are in fact mortal.
my fingers have also gotten caught in that place in the door, I got these bruises and cuts in a single line along my fingers and it was awful :\ I cringe now even thinking about it
the mediocrity thing. I was trying to explain that to Ella and Francisco when they were debating about being average. Thanks for explaining it correctly for me. This is exactly how I feel about that particular topic.
@lilbluehersheykiss one would call a life of mediocrity an "average life". I understand the difference you're talking about, this is still exactly what I was trying to explain to them. (We got into a much longer conversation outside of our videos).
Omg I have the same fear about swimming in the ocean because I can't see what's in the water! I don't even like swimming in a pool at night. It makes no logical sense because I know there is nothing in there, but unfortunately I have a very active imagination :(
But for real I sorta have that fear of mediocrity, which is in part why I will be going into the film industry, but I worked at a grocery store for about a month and quit because nothing I did had any impact. I have no fear of death, I'm the opposite of you, I get moments where I realize that I exist and it is a really awesome experience. Just a couple of days ago, I realized that I had vision and spent ten minutes looking around and checking depth, and color.

Ive gotten my finger jammed like so... the skin got completely ripped off on the tip joint on the side opposite of the nail, but was still hanging on. Your fear, the one about mediocrity, is the same as mine. But I tell it more along the lines of how much I dont want to be forgotten when I die.
our value depend on what we are able to add, to fix... in this world...well, this is how i see the existens or a part of it.

Humans are probably the only ones that are aware of their own mortality. I imagine if say you have a pet dog it assumes it is going to go on forever.

@TheSingingPeople that fear is such a self fulfilling prophecy. the fear of mediocrity itself is another universal human experience.
