@chikenarch actually, in the manga, and I think in the anime, too, they say that death is equal and that everyone goes into nothingness when they die. When Ryuk says Light can't go to heaven or hell, Light tells him that's all he needed to know to figure out "death is equal". So, might as well use it well you can lol

Perhaps it WOULD be easier to simply kill off all the people in the world whom challenge our system, but that's not practical, and it's not solving the problem. If you kill a criminal, you're not helping them, and you're not helping anyone. That criminal would gladly die over take a life sentence. A life doesn't equal a life. Killing them won't make them feel any remorse. Light was trying to push his own morals onto others.

Now, as the series developed, there were media outlets speaking of the "word of Kira". Agree to disagree if you will on the premise of Kira being a God, but that's besides the point. Kira(Light) wants to promote a Perfect World, now the Degenerate has absolutely no outlet.

Why did he eat it? Ego. In this case, Kira's ego expresses itself in his self-righteousness. When one thinks too high of him/herself, they become blind. Just as Adam became blind and was unable to see that by eating the forbidden apple, he would be directly disobeying God regardless of how tasty it's

@naakato Kinda, but not really though. The apple is a huge, complex symbol in the series. It represents the conflicting ideals of justice between L and Kira. (Think of Hera receiving an apple from Zeus [King of all Gods in Greek mythology] as an engagement gift or the Garden of Eden- the apple was a symbol of the Original Sin).

I can go in real depth, but it gets more confusing as you go along. Just know that it basically symbolizes justice.
