Does anyone know of any programs to volunteer to help autistic kids or any kids with special needs? I dont want to be a special ed teacher, but I do want to volunteer my time to help out
@guessedsummer i bet your the kind of person who trawls the internet looking for something controversial to say about video's that people post on here in the hope you will get a reaction. i wish you no harm or offense, but i think the young man in this clip has 100x more moral fibre and is a far greater human being that you will ever be. you are one sad sad individual and i pity you, where i have nothing but respect for the young man and his family that are depicted in this video.

Sorry to everyone else for my language but I can't stand ignorant people who are uneducated making comments about innocent people who would never harm anyone or have a bad nasty bone in their bodies who just want to be excepted.
Waching your son has really changed my view of life . I'm 15 and my mom is trained in special education. She has always taught me' about specal education and I have always had connections with Facilities that tend sepcial Ed . I always go to places where There are many different types and I a always feel a connection with people with special needs. When I make them smile or even just talk to me' I feel like I have kade a difference I go to these facilities as often as I can because I want to
Hello, my mother works as a special education (whatever politically correct term you'd like to insert) teacher. Like you many of her adult and adolescent students are exactly like Jamey. She has observed several videos and recommends the following. Apply for every single federal and state benefits that you can. Medicaid, SSI, food stamps (based on Jamey's income), federal social security caregivers allowance for disabled persons, and override any LVN restrictions that your state puts on Jamey b
You have the same problem as us: In the UK, the right to Special Needs Education ends at 19 in the UK!!! Crap or what? Society needs to accommodate all: That means finding work for these adults as you will agree. Autistic adults contribute as you know.
There are adult day programs that are out there. What PUBLIC doesn't understand is that the severely autistic population with behavioral and medical needs (self abuse and epilepsy for example) require 1:1 LVN (licensed vocational nurses) to ATTEND community programs AFTER special ed. ENDS. Usually, the Regional Centers (in California) PAY for this service, so it's always a FIGHT for parents to secure this funding and support or their kids are CONFINED to staying home all day with NO support.
I just wanted to say that I LOVE hearing him when he is Happy and making all of the Noises that he does, I can usaly tell while watching your Videos of Jamie when he is Happy or Frustrated=) I realy want to go back to school and get my masters in Special eduaction or even some kind of therpy to Work with Special needs children and adults=)
@jsrcamp You know i just read this and it made me think (even though im 10 i dont think much about autism) i wonder what it would be like to be in a body of a Special ed for atleast 1day
hi i just wanted to say he is so sweet i think that peaple should help him like other peaple get help hes such a sweet boy ive got dissibilitys to and disorders and ive got no support eathier and its hard staying home all the time i live bye myself with my animals they are my support without them i dont know what would happen to me but its very lonly a lot of times i go day to day just trying my best they have no help for peaple like me eathier.maybe someday they will have support for all of us.
There are so many coming now that the State had better start getting this right. Jamey's generation was one in eight thousand, now they are being turned out one in a hundred.
We have a wonderful son with severe autism He is 24 and he lives with us in Northern CA. He is in a pretty good adult program, but his aggression is a little more than the staff can take. He continues to grow and learn. His speech is very limited but improving week by week. The adult programs are okay but underfunded and the staff undereducated about working with our loved ones. We need to organize as parents and gather info and spread the word on how to work with our adults. Anyone interested?
@bludyvrr Also, it is soooo true. Most ALL Day Programs for adults wi;th autism are undertaffed and staff can't handle our kids. I've had to train every single nurse, even, that comes into our home, which, I suppose when you have children this extreme, it's just what you need to do. I can't expect people who haven't handled this for 18 years to get my son unless I train them myself. Congress should pass legislation to help keep adults with autism in the community and out of group homes
if this is severe form of autism, it has nothing to do with special education that works with autist high functionning like me(asperger syndrome). As an autist, I don't see how the special educator that helping me everyday will know how to help this autist kind.
1st sorry, my first language is french.
2nd sorry, I don't agree that this 21 years old receive the same help as me.
@buffalobills911 You are right. If you are high functioning then your education would be much different, as you're able to write and speak. Jamey, on the most severe side of spectrum requires a different kind of education. However, in his sp. ed class a High functioning autistic who is NON verbal, gets a long fine with Jamey. They seem to have a connection.
@buffalobills911 I had to pull my son out of 11th grade, because he is nonverbal has severe cerebral and required to use a wheelchair. His school put my son in a harmful situtation which forced me to home school him. they weaken him physically and mentally. I trained home care workers and he is making tiny progress weekly. The public school system don't want anyone who required continous supervison and help. There is no way he can be himself if he goes to any institution. ~Daniel's mom
First I have a son who is almost 8 and seems to share quite a few behaviors with your son . I commend you for being able to put this out there for all the rest of us to learn from yours and yours sons experiences. Your videos have been a great springboard of ideas for us to try and honestly have eliminated a lot of trial and error for us as you have figured out some great ways to handle behaviors and protect your son. That said just wanted to say thanks
Do you think he realizes anything that's going on? I mean he's trapped inside a mind that will not allow him to function properly. I think he should go to heaven where he would be freed and healed from his afflictions. Even the Mom would give him up for that. BUT, alas I am a dreamer and have not solved a thing here with this post.
@KSitz77 NO the MOM, who is me, would NOT want him to go to heaven so he can be healed and free, because he has every right to be where U and I are right now, with people helping him with healing and freedoms.
@CDFoakley I totally agree he has every right we all have and it should be that way! BTW I have an autistic daughter so I know a little something about this. At times I look at them and I just think what a long road we have ahead of us and I get depressed about that. But, when it is his time to go, and only God knows that, he has a free ticket unlike Britney Spears and others that are deliberately choosing to behave badly, that's the difference. Again, I didn't mean to offend, was having bad day
@KSitz77: Consider this: There are 1000's of NON autistic persons with "trapped minds that don't function properly". Brittany Spears, George Bush & half our congress comes to mind. Do U apply the same standards to them that you do people like my autistic son?
@CDFoakley Well said!! I'm working with an 8 yo with severe autism and epilepsy. Who are you (KSitz77) to even begin to ponder whether his life is worth living? and CDFoakley - 100% right...what about herion addicts, schitzophrenics, car accident victims? What if your (KSitz77) loved one was in a car accident and had brain damage, if that made them unable to communicate "normally"? Heaven? Look up Tim Minchin's clip "Storm" and realise that it's perhaps you that's trapped in your own head.
i can only how hard it is but in a sense i have seen this with my 7 yeard old brother he also has severe autism and hits him self severely my parents 2 sisters and i have gotten tired so bad that were practicly giving up but then i see your video and it give me asense of relieve that my fanily and i aren't alone that this has been happenig for years abd will continue if we don't stck together and end this once and for all.
here in WA state its to 18 as well. my son will be 15 in May, and we are dreading when he hits 18. i'd be thrilled if he was potty trained before that. Stay strong. your not alone.
Have you tried NEAT treatments for autism? My son stopped self injury behaviors in the same time we were doing that. I'm not 100% sure if it was related, just want to give you a clue. God Bless !
You are a truly courageous person for giving others the opportunity to meet your exceptional son. Thank you.
