  • i have never forgotten this sensational opening at Wembley, it has remained with me for all these years and now I get to see it again, it is like it was yesterday.... where have all those years gone. Wonderful

  • isn't this song beautiful? .... i don't know how to describe it ..... it just all works together ..... A MASTERPIECE! ..... if not for the singing .... surely for the instrumental part!

  • When I was young (probably 9, or 10 years old) seeing that spaceship stage, I thought it looked the bees knees, still looks cool now, and what a terrific song to boot.

  • the audio is essentially the track from the album. It would be nice if it were the real live audio.

  • The title says 1973, but this had to be the Out of the Blue tour from 1978. I saw their show in Indianapolis Market Square Arena on that tour. They didn't have the spaceship though :-( I think they said it wouldn't fit.

What keyboard is that that Richard Tandy was doing the arpeggiated chords? Was that an RMI Keybaord Computer?

  • @ImprovedNewShimmer I was at the same concert!

  • @ImprovedNewShimmer

    Probably the Yamaha CS-80.

  • Great Band ... but now I know why punk happened.

  • this song ... especially at the beginning (instrumental) is so awesome ..... just grabs hold of my nerves .... in a good way .... and massages them, gently!

  • Somewhere, Red Forman is pissed off.

  • Brings back a lot of memories: Seen them live in Toronto space ship and all. Love them

  • One of my absolute faves. This one rocks!! My daughter was listening to and singing to this when she was a couple of years old just after the millenium!

  • это весьма круто))

  • One of a kind...never duplicated.

  • this is great !!!!!

  • As grand as Muse but 30 years earlier and with 1% of the technology. God bless rock for clever people! ;)

  • ahhh, memories!!!

  • awesome assemblance of sound!

  • I stand corrected! your right, still, it really was one heck of a night Id love to have the chabce to see them again part 2 ,3 or whatever. the really lay it down.............

  • I saw ELO in a club setting of 300 people in 1995, it was one of the best venues for a band on a reunion tour it was right in your face, I also have seen them at the Forum in Los Angeles a much larger venue.... You gain alot from a smaller stage that gets lost in translation from a Stadium, its unbeleiveable !!!!!!!

  • @rocktilludrop59 the 1995 date wasn't elo, it was elo part 2. Still would've been an awesome show, eh, but it would've been even more awesome with Jeff! :D

  • Just amazing!

  • I was at this concert and it was great! The best.

  • BIG early Beatles influence....but way better!

  • Awesome!

  • Jeff Lynne is a born again bisexual. My problem or his?

  • @jeffcocks40 I'd say your problem, now shut up and just listen to the music and stop with the stupid comments that have nothing to do with the music.

  • @c1serty78 Youy are his gay love interest aren't you?

  • @jeffcocks40 yours prick

  • @3a57a3a3 lol

  • @jeffcocks40 Knob

  • THE GREATEST BAND EVER.!

  • brought up with ELO and the music is bang on to the nth degree, you cant help liking it and bouncing around as you drive along,

  • they used a choir and 30 piece orchestra to get the sound they wanted. on their albums. Whats wrong with using a taped choir and orchestra while on tour. I saw them live in 1977 and 1981 and no one else has ever come close to producing what they did.

  • This is normally my favorite ELO song! On most days!

My dad had this Live at Wembley Stadium concert on VHS. I played that thing to DEATH!

  • Check the other clip of this on Youtube. It is live audio. For some reason, this one from the DVD with the Discovery bonus had the recorded song, while the other one is LIVE, LIVE, LIVE!!!!

  • At 2:29, Jeff is gesturing, "turn it up!!!!"

ELO came to Portland, Maine but the spaceship ended up at the next stop in Canada. Still a great show!!!

  • Amazing piece of work. So what if a backing tape was used for some parts, even bigger hats off to them -- imagine trying to play along to it back in that day, before in ear monitoring and click tracks were around, hell most big artists now a days lip sync to the full show -- Madonna / Kylie / Robbie!!, nevermind just a couple of songs. They could have never re created live what was done in the studio in they days without backing tracks. They led the way for todays artists, and excellent live now

  • they were just amazing, to say the least.

  • One of their all time best tunes. I Love it...

  • I saw the Out of the Blue concert back in 197X...I didnt give a s^@t about the recorded music versus "live music".....That was the BEST stage show I had ever seen at the time. I loved ELO, and was so into their music, they could have been missing, and played a soundtrack I would have loved it1. Seriously, They were one of the better bands around, and they were "screwed" because" of a "taped" song...who cares...They made the original music!

  • one of the best bands of all time!

  • Wonderful ..thanks for posting this ...I love ELO Concerto for a Rainy Day....

  • The arrangement alone on this piece is a work of art.

  • my first LP!

  • @cooldudebailey It's actually a vocoder using white noise instead of a keyboard sound. "Concerto For A Rainy Day" is what it's saying. This is the album version, vocals & all.

  • at 2:06, i swear to god that voice goes "OH SHIT!"

  • zapkvr, do yourself a favor, go to bed and get over it, they play live

  • Great seeing Kelly smile at 2:30

  • Wasn't introducing this gig the high point of Tony Curtis's career? That and Some Like It Hot, obviously...

  • This concert was bigger than life. Overwhelming talent too! They don't make them like this anymore. This was a day when every star had something unique to perform, unlike the clone crap these poor kids are stuck with today.

  • Cool

  • Holy crap I FREAKIN' LOVE ELO!!!! Each song I hear by them only gets better and better!!!

  • Saw this presentation in K.C. in the 70's. Awesome group!

  • To Papaburrito: no, drummer Bev Bevan is a dude . . just a bad shot in the video. Sorry, but Mike had left the band by this point, he olny featured in three studio an done live album. Very talented though - as is everyone that Jeff Lynne works with. TOP BAND

  • @SeniorNJNear a dude and a damned fine drummer. God, I love ELO.

  • @teslagirl1 : Dammed fine drummer indead. Well said. Loved ELO since around 1983 when I first heard Twighlight, been my top band ever since.

  • @SeniorNJNear I love that song as well--love ELO period, but my favorite is "Do Ya".

  • a female drummer ? which Cello player is Mike Edwards?ELO 4 ever.!!!

  • Mike Edwards descanse en paz....

  • RIP SWEET PRINCE

  • Well so they used backing tracks for some of the music. Why did they get vilified for it when every act today (Britney Spears anyone)? gets away with lip syncing her entire show? ELO had so much stuff going on in their songs they had to take a few shortcuts.

  • The 70's would not have been the same without ELO- their music was (and still is) exceptional!

    --NYMETZ

  • It just goes to show how good these blokes are, they get their song to sound so close to the original, but you can tell it's not recorded because of the clarity and depth of the viloncello, those notes are so clear and the bowing is perfect. You don't get that on a studio recording much these days :D

  • I'll love ELO forever!!!

  • this was a great night

  • Who would have thought a band from Birmingham singing about standing in the rain could sound so amazing!

  • Joygasm

  • fan dam tastic

  • 3:26 Bev shouldn't have hit the cymbal then!! lol

  • One of my all time favorite songs from ELO. Why are they not in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame????

  • ELO is epic.

  • Oh, this heals my soul. Thank you rockvidz. YouTube is a great "invention". This was my favourite track on my first LP. (and double it was) I´m impressed that ELO puts so much effort into making it sound like the track on the studio album in a live concert. I´ll watch it over and over...

  • it´s a playback mate! don´t you realize?

  • I saw them 1978 it was amazing!

  • this band sure do cause controversy lol zapkvr you really should do more research b4 dissing, so what! they had an orchestral backing tape on a couple of songs! to say that they fooled audiences is idiotic

  • @RoyWoodsWig I agree completely, if they hadnt used the backing tapes, guaranteed someone wouldve complained about the quality of music, i say good for them. Thinking of their may fans :)

  • @RoyWoodsWig It might actually be by doing one track without all the thrashy guitars and stuff in it, and miming a little (i can tell) that it went easier on the duchess of Gloucester's ears?? Bless jeff and the boys for thinking of her that way

  • Check out my Remastered upload of this song and others from the concert, on my channel!

  • I love the shot at 2:17. Other than Beven, the band is staged white with a black background. Awesome. I saw them in Buffalo, New York, but truth be told, I can't remember if they did this tune. As a 19 year old country hick, I was in TOTAL AWE....

  • 1978. i was there, right on the front row. iam now 47yrs old and i still think elo are the greatest. thanks for the upload.

  • slow to the start

  • The Wembley concert was on TV not long ago, they were playing aright as there were a few bum notes especially from the strings,

They may have used complex backing tapes for some of the songs but to say they werent playing is going a bit far.

  • I know they are not playing, they almost never did in the seventies, it was just too hard. Luckily the crowds were a little more forgiving back then. We would have missed out on some great stage shows. It was all about the theatre really.

  • Utter bollocks...they played every note live. Get your facts right!!!!!!!!

  • You are totally incorrect they were always live! This particular video is the reason why people persist to this day saying they faked it! check out my ELO live vids to ''hear'' the proof!

  • Jeff Lynne has never made a secret of the fact that they used supplemental tracks to play parts of the songs that could not be reproduced live such as heavily orchestrated intros, much like 'Queen' did on Bohemian Rhapsody live, ths practice is now commonplace! to insinuate that ELO ''Fooled'' audiences is an insult to this great band. i suggest you like others have misquoted this ''report'' I too have seen then livem and they were a tight unit

  • eh? you wired up right ? how did i contradict? I sayed ELO always performed Live in answer to cretins like yourself who maintain they lip synched there's only one Fool on this thread! and its painfully obvious it's you! now go away and comment on a subject that you might actually have some credible input on!

  • shut up you mong!

  • yeah but your a fucking retard who is really gullible and wont accept the facts that ELO is the most awesome REGULAR ROCK band.

  • this is playback for sure. I compared it with the original album and it is 100% the same, no doubt. In the seventies you still could fake, luckily not now anymore

  • Best ever!!!

  • who are the drummer?

  • Bev Bevan.

  • tanx!

  • the drummer is bev bevan

  • One of the greatest songs in my Library. I only wish they were still around making the same sound

  • Concerto for a Rainy Day: masterpiece !

  • i remember had this on my stereo stuck with my mates at portsmouth harbour in the rain when i was about 15 got told off by the station guard for being 2 loud good times

  • the beatles were brill and elo 2

  • hey bourne9999 how bout u chill off the Beatles a little bit there's more then one great band out there and their one of them and they might have done drugs but I bet ELO has 2 so stop freaking out and if they became ELO then would u still think that they were bad????

  • If you're looking for some bug called the beatles, they ain't fucking here.... ELO Rules...

  • ladies and gentlemen i give you the greatest rockband in the world today, the ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA.

  • Esa música apoteósica de ELO es absolutamente inigualable, es sobrecogedora...

  • Best band ever (except for the Beatles, o'course)!! I saw them every time they came to town, they are amazing. Wish they'd come back...

  • Comment removed

  • Aaag.... you are satan!! Even Jeff Lynne adored the fab four. Thanks again for posting the vid, it is so great - as I said, I saw it a million years ago in Cleveland, best concert ever.

    Much love,

    H

  • Not strictly true...it is widely accepted that ELO are what the Beatles would have become if they had lasted, Listen to the "Beatles" stuff that was released in the 80s/90s like Free as a Bird - it is Jeff Lynne as the 5th Beatle! It sounds just like ELO.

  • Wow!! The nice memories this brings me. I was a young man in the 70's and a good friend introduced me to ELO. Awesome music. I wish American Idol would do a tribute to this band.

  • wee kelly is in the spaceship upstairs now, his part in elo will live on, happy memories

  • Kelly Groucutt died?! Oh how horrible!

  • Who was Kelly Groucutt?

  • Kelly is the other gitaurist standing to Jeff Lynne's left. He was with ELO from the early days.

  • thank you

  • Kelly Groucutt died 19th February 2009 of a heart attack. Rest in peace...This song was one of my favorite.. Simply beautiful..

  • That's from the master. Did they ever do this live?

  • This is one of my favorite all time songs... ELO or anyone! I love Concerto for a Rainy Day. Pure Genius!!!

  • I saw that same concert in Chicago in 1978. It was amazing how 2 cellist and 1 violinist sounded like a full orchestra!

  • Saw them in Chicago at the old Chicago Stadium in '78 and they sounded like shi^. They were obviously playing over a lot of backing tracks and it was echoing all over the place so it sounded like a large rumble. I remember leaving the stadium and people actually claiming they could see that Jeff and Kelly were late with their vocals to the backing track and it didn't match up. It's a shame because I also saw them play live in '76 and they were raw and full of energy.

  • I was there in June 1978 - they DID use backing tracks which is a shame...

  • OOOOOOOOO

    COOOOOOOL

  • Tandy on the keyboards. Awesome. If I could come back in the next life, it would be the keyboardist for ELO!! Between the strings and keyboard, THEY made ELO!!

  • wot u on ! I want some !

  • impeccable ...love Jeff's voice on this one ... I think Queen and ELO and Wings probably were the natural inheritors of the Beatles sound in the 70's ... ABBA also in the 80's ... even if you call them cheesy and commercial, but they have great songs ... if you notice reaaly carefully Fernando is very similar to Hey Jude, the Winner takes it all has big influence on Lennon's #9 Dream ...etc .. it all comes from the Beatles ..

  • johnlennon100,iwas never really into Abba

apart from "Dancing Queen",which i assumme

everyone loves, but i heard one of ABBAS "rarer"tracks the other day-EAGLE,ive

listened to this song before but i didnt realise how talented ABBA actually were until now.

  • That's interesting ...How did you know that Lennon actually liked Dancing QUeen? ...I'm really interested in what Lennon used to like form the late 70's ... I know he liked Billy Joel's Glass Houses, he seemed to have liked Queen and ELO, and Bowie ...

  • Music repeats itself. It is not stealing or borrowing, it's natural.

  • Probably but the ultimate goal for an artist is to create something really unique .... it doesn;t make sense just to copy the classics or have a big influence from them but to go to totally different perspectives and models.

  • You started with "probably"-a right thing to do.

  • If pink floyd played this everyone would be waxing lyrics.I love floyd but i think ELO

must be one of the most underated bands of all time.

  • @stevebenbob ABSOLUTELY! This must be their 1979 Wembley concert, or at least that same tour.

  • Saw them amongst an intimate gathering of about 80,000 in the old Cleveland Stadium 30 years ago this summer, which was the summer after I graduated from high school. Had a great time, and am even more grateful that I made it home alive so that I could wax about it during my HS reunion earlier this summer. Ah, back in the day.

  • This is one of my favorite all time songs! I think I might take 'Concerto for a Rainy Day' with me in the coffin when I croak... This is beyond awesome!!!

  • Is it just me, or is this the studio version of the song we're hearing? You can even hear it fade out at the end. Isn't there a version that has the actual live sound on it?

  • I was there for this show, watching again brings back goose pimples, awesome....

  • Has anyone noticed Uncle Jeff Wave his arm in Richards direction at about 2mins 30secs as if to say "Come on, come on". Kelly then has a wry chuckle to himself. I think Rich' may have been having technical difficulties because later in the concert we see Richard again With a "help" sort of look on his face desperately twidling knobs....ah the '70s...god i miss them..

  • Powerful, very moving.

  • WOW

  • This is ABBA???

  • No. E.L.O.

  • Yeah. Agneta is the one with the beard. Ahm, and with sunglasses ;)

  • Back in the late 70s before ESPN went 100% sports, ( Why it's called Entertainment and Sports Network ) I remember watching this concert and thought wow, this is great. What a show.

  • ELO put on an AWESOME show! And this is one of my favorite tunes!!!

  • either the drummer is a dude with tits or its a chick with masculine features and a guy's arms

  • oh man respect good old Beb Bevan a fine drummer and a straight man.

  • Dude... have you ever heard Bev sing when they were the Move? He's got a wicked deep voice! Look for "Zing went the strings of my heart" or "Ben Crawley's Steel Company".

  • MOZART meets CHUCK BERRY

  • So, is this one from the VHS or DVD? Because I have the CD of I suppose the poorly dubbed VHS audio. And this sure sounds like it. Identical to the Studio LP, just crappier quality.

Has anyone posted the DVD version? Dying to hear it. I Totally feel BlueBlackCard's thoughts.

  • ¿Qué ven mis ojos?, no es posible que el batería tenga tetas?? Que alguien me responda. XDDD

  • Cool Jeff, looking better than EVER, in his white blazer and trademark shades !!!

  • continued..

< and I had a difficult time reconciling those who I considered professional musicians of integrity with folks like Milli Vanilli, etc. -- considering that, the Wembley VHS was a horrible ambassador for ELO as a live band.

This reissue DVD fully clears the band's reputation:They weren't frauds who faked their way through concerts! The original sound has been restored, no dubbing with the studio recordings and the band showed an amazing amount of confidence, power and energy.

  • are you kidding me... there was never any doubt as to lynn ability's as a song arrangment proffesional(since he could'nt actually write what he was playing or read music) and performer one of the greastest ground breaking bands of all time(the beatles of ther era as it were) and bev (the drummer) is a women.. and a hot women i might add

  • Anyone who thinks ELO stood in front of an audience at Wembley and lip-synced is a moron.

  • I recall reading where Kelly Groucutt said once that they did play along to tapes, because he and Jeff couldn't cover all the vocals between the two of them. I'm not sure of just how much music was on tape, maybe just some back up vocals and some of the orchestral stuff.

Anyway, Groucutt said that one of the things he liked about playing with ELO II was that they had enough vocalists between him and the new guys they hired that they could do the vocal arrangements justice.

  • this here sounds exactly like the L.P...

  • Here's what I copied from Amazon Review about the Reissue DVD

<About 20 years ago, I decided to rent the ELO Live at Wembley VHS to which my girlfriend at the time said, "Oh, they lip-synched..." Her proclamation seemed confirmed as I watched Jeff and the boys appear to sync to the studio versions. Why were the crowd so crazy about them? Why would Bev flail at his drumkit with such abandon if he were not, in fact, playing for the audience? I was crushed,

  • This was an awesome concert!I rented the video many years back, and loved it!

  • Saw this show in Toronto In exhibition place in 1976,,,,magnificent. NITRAM

  • saw this at wembley awesome

  • I love cranking this tune up in the car. Freakin' awesome......

  • Saw this concert live in 1979 at the Capitol Center in DC..Awesome event..

  • On the DVD have they brightened it so you can see the UFO rising up better? On the VHS tape it was dark and hard to tell what was going on...and YouTube always makes everything darker....
