Wasn't there a tributary of the Yangtze River, which had a steel grate at its opening, so it could be separated from the Yangtze, where the remaining baijis could survive from the pollution and shipping traffic of the Yangtze?
I cried at this :( Poor Baiji! No animal deserves to die in its own home. Humans are shit; there's too many of us and too many of us don't care. I don't like to think about those last couple of poor lonely Baiji swimming about in that polluted river, it's heartbreaking
OMG y r ppl sooo ignorent alot of ppl still think that it went extinct well if any 1 of u clueless ppl did a little research u would know that it was thought that it went extinct but it was recently discovered so its still alive & in existence just criticly endangered so it still needs r help 2help it 2still exist so if any 1of u just stop moping around & actually du sumthin cause its not 2late & if ur gonna c a video about it then u should atleast learn about it sum more & du a little research!
It's sad...but I think in about 200 to 300 years most large animals over 100pds will be extinct or severely endangered. Most carnivores will be gone AT THIS RATE.....perhaps we will come to our senses...but overall I have little hope. I personally will never have children (by choice). To may of us (all humans) not enough of them (animals).
@equarg yay! i will never have children either, I personally believe that if there was nothingness, there would be no accidents or murders or diseases. i hope we can save these animals and stop reproducing ourselves!
This species is pretty much extinct now. There may or may not be a single elderly one still swimming around. But that doesn't change the fact that the species is pretty much gone.
And the sad thing is, as it is more species stand to follow it.
Frankly, I fear that the growing overpopulation will inevitably wipe out nature entirely if it's not stemmed. More people need more resources after all. And that means less nature.
Seriously... if people wnat to save nature, don't have more then two kids, or better yet have none or just one.
That may seem a bit extreme now, but that's the way it's going to go down in the long run. Mark my words. If the choice boils down to humans OR nature, three guesses what people'll choose.
And the more humans on the planet, the closer that's going to come.
Yes, there were sightings, but no credible ones. A photo or a video of something that is two miles or more away, seemes to be white and therefore could be a baiji is just not enough as a proof.
The attitude, that the baiji could be extinct, but not necessarily is, leads imo to the irresponsibility of mankind. So everyone can continue destroying the yangtze ecosystem like before.
sorry about the last comment i messed that one up.
can you explain to me what the efforts were in that 6 week baiji search in 2006.
and i do realize several species are in jeopardy due to the carelessness of the chinese government who absoloutly do nothing to help the yangtze river
i still believe the baiji is quite critically endangered to extinct.
No Problem! I just wanted to explain you my point of view and not convince you of something.
The Efforts were imo to catch media attention for this expedition, to find during this 6 week expedition some Baijis left in the jangtze ecosystem, make some photos or videos as a proof for the public and in the end to find some organizations, who spend the needed money for a new conservation program.
It´s a great pity, but it was in 2006 already too late.
Your video makes me want to cry. I remember in 2006 finding out that they were extinct. The baiji was a personal totem to me, and I still cry everytime I watch videos on the Baiji. Its so sad to see what we have done to this planet.
@jaysuewatch@blademaster1948 there were some observatories and its confirmed that the baiji is critically endangered but NOT extinct. the dolphines will start humping and the baiji might not be so endangered. we also have to stop destroying the yangtze river
The main problem is, that the extinction of the Baiji is just the beginning! The whole Yangtze ecosystem is collapsing right now and with it a lot of unique species will disappear soon. Examples: Finless porpoise (vulnerable); Baer´s Pochard (endangered); Yangtze shoft-shell turtles, Chinese alligator, Yangtze sturgeons, Yangtze paddlefish (all critically endangered).
The Chinese and the whole international community had 30 years to save the Baiji. The result you can see by watching this video. I´m sure that they won´t change their "strategy" for saving the other named animals.
but the finles porpoise as a whole species is common.
the chinese sturgeon i endangered but not critically.the paddlefish is critically endangered, same with the alligator but the yangtze softshell turtles are extint in the wild.
There´s a lot of shipping traffic every day on the jangtze. On this ships and boats there are human beings and if still Baijis would have been left, someone must have seen them, but no one did see anything credible in the last 8 years. So imo this dolphin is extinct.
There exist massive breeding programs for the sturgeon. The last paddlefish was seen in 2007. There are two shoftshell turtles left in captivity, both too old to reproduce.
Hopefully the Yangtze turtles aren't too old- both eggs and sperm seem to be ok although none of the eggs hatched. With a good deal of luck and a dietary adjustment they might succeed next year. I find it horrible that the same 'scientists' who said the dam wasn't going to do that much damage were the same ones loudly decrying it a few years later...they cannot have not known.
There are far too many people in this world and far too many people who don't care about anything but themselves.

The Chinese don't care. All they care about is keeping their iown people slaves to make products for Walmart.

Why did the Chinese government not do anything? They must be totally crazy!

The Chinese did try to help, but sadly, it was too late.
Of course, it's extinction isn't truly confirmed yet.

sorry i have no idea were ya got your info from:
1.finless porpoise is common around the ocean and doing good in the yangtze.
2.

I read books, collected a lot of information in the internet etc.
By the way I talked about the unique freshwater finless porpoise in the Yangtze and not about the other subspecies.

good info however wrong about the baiji.
theres been recent sightings on the baiji and the yangtze river is one of the largest freshwater ecosystems.
the baiji could be anywhere in the immense miles of the yangtze, which is why i say its critically endangered at least.
