The original ending WAS shot in color and was released on a 1998 dvd copy, but days later was recalled for an upcoming theatre re-release of the film, but in a studio fire shortly after that all of the color copies were destroyed leaving only the black and white copies left, therefore shattering the dream of a re-release with the original ending.
wait.... why did she die and why did he gave her body to that monster.im confused that god they didnt use that ending the movie probably wouldn't be as popular
if you listen to jsut hte audio for the part when seymor is getting audrey out of twoey, it sounds like seymor is having sex.. if you just listen to it, it will come to you.. :P
@TheTjerty Yes, because this is just the original edited version of the workprint! I hate it when people whine about films being black and white. So please shut yer jaws.
@TheTjerty Well i'm not whining, I'm just surprised that a black and white movie has this good of animation. I haven't seen one before that is this good.
I know this has probably been said a hundred times already but as you can see the filmmakers did originally shoot this ending. They paid a lot of money for it. But when they showed it to preview audiences no one liked it. People wanted to see Seymore and Audrey live and suceed. The filmmakers then when back and quickly reshot the ending.
Completely agree on the "moral resonance" of this ending. I saw an amateur production of this show based of course on the original stage version, and I was so much more touched by the sadder ending.
@DistantCousin I agree with the moral resonance also but this endings believability (yeah I know, I'm complaining about believability in a movie with a giant space plant that eats people) just wasnt very good, I mean the military with all their fire based weaponry couldn't stop PLANTS? I mean last I checked fire and plants dont go together.
@Jacob6443 I hope the original ending is actually PART of the movie and not an extra...and they should also add the extended part of "The Meek Shall Inherit!"
The movie version is missing the stuff that makes it more of a Faustian deal. It doesn't have all of Meek Shall inherit, Seymour tricking Mushnick into the plant because he's going to take him to the police, etc. So the play ending doesn't really fit the movie version, and vice versa.
However, I saw a stage production with a happy ending which was really weird.
This being one of my favorite movies of all time, I have to say I can appreciate both endings completely. I've grown up with the happy ending, so I naturally like that one. This is the first time I've seen the alternate ending. I gotta say, it's pretty disturbing, but also very good. I do however feel it doesn't quite match the tone of the rest of the film, but this ending does resonate emotionally in a much bigger way.
Even though I like the other ending better I can honestly say this one is superior. Mainly because this here has a more thrilling ending and of course the end song is just awesome. And the special effects of the plants destroying the city were simply amazing.
But the other has a happier ending. Oh well either way it's still good.
@musicis100percent Uh, they DO get married and live happily ever after in the movie version, with a cameo of a little plant at the very end right before the credit s role suggesting the possibility of a sequel. From what I understand, it's always only been in the many different plays of LSOH that has the "everyone dies" ending. I have LSOH on DVD so I get to enjoy the happy ending that I prefer every time. ( this version...with rick moranis, steve martin , and bil murray)
They do, at least in the happy ending that was officially released. The filmmakers dropped this one because the test audience saw Audrey and Seymour (mostly Audrey) dying and were really pissed off at the idea. I agree that it's a very depressing scene and I really hate to see the character die, but her death is essential to the moral of the story.
AFTER WATCHING THIS VIDEO! SEARCH [iretrobaby-Megaman] He STRAIGHT MURDERED THAT JOINT REAL TALK!HE GOTTA DECENT AMOUNT OF VIEWS ON IT BUT HE DESERVES WAAY MORE! GO SEARCH IT IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME!
Amazing! And absolutely gorgeous! I like this ending very much. Audreys death is so heartbreaking and beautiful. I cried. Plants rampage is overextended, though. I like both endings. Each of them have their points. And I don't know which one fits better for the movie. Original ending is more emotional and moralistic, but, otherwise, Seymour and Audrey are too nice in the movie and not deserve such terrible end.
I love this ending! My friends think I'm weird because I prefer this ending over the happy Hollywood ending, but I love it because you don't see it coming. And the lesson lies in the original ending, and who gives me the right to mess around with the original writer's vision?
As soon as Jim Belushi shows up, the movie turns to ass. I'd pay to see a DVD with this b+w footage cut in, but as for what's for sale now... I'll pass forever.
@javelinman7 about 8 years ago the DVD was released with the original ending, howeverthere were some problems with the studio and it was yanked from the shelves
@DarkwingMantis98 im so glad that i pre ordered it its so rare now it can get up to 300 dollars buts its to bad theres noother half of meek shall inherit song if you here it its really good.
@Nintendowaffles oh you lucky bastard. I was in the play years ago so I know the whole Meek Shall Inherit song, and yes it is fantastic. My one gripe is that the movie left out Mushnik's song Mushnik and Son (since I played Mushnik on stage lol)
Yeah, the original ending is a cop out. Seymour killed 2 people, and it's really hard to argue mushkin deserved it, sure he was greedy, but did he deserve to die? This is a dark movie. I pray we get this ending restored on a new release as it elevates this movie from great to an absolute classic
I will definitley say this about the ending, that piano that goes on from 5:00-6:37 is absolutely gorgeous. I know we all have our preferences in which ending we like better, but I like being able to see both. It's nice to see what COULD have been done had the directors decided to give the film the same ending as the stage play rather than keeping it in the dark forever.
Who ever said that the speacial effects in the 80s where poor must have been a nut! He scares me! I don't think I'll be buying a venus fly trap anytime soon!
you know with tihs film being such a comedy, as well as th epaly. I think this was definately the wrong ecnding. It's too serious for the rest of it. Maybe it looks better on stage with this ending, but in the film it seems jsut so out of palce.
@SingerKId12 It's called a tragicomedy: a mixture of tragedy and comedy. That's how the play was: it had something for everyone. Changing the movie's ending killed part of what made the play so memorable.
I don't know much about film, but may I ask; why is this in black and white? I'm sure it has to do with never being finished, as it is the unused ending, but I would like to know, please don't think me as stupid for asking.
Oh, please! It was good of you to make this available, but when you prattle about -- ahem -- "the classic that could have been had the filmmakers stayed true to the retelling of Faust that lent moral resonance to its otherwise campy source material," you sound like an asinine twit. You don't think this lachrymose ending is equally campy? And dull? And a downer?
I love this ending, but it doesn't fit. In the play, Seymour sang through his options and decided to let Orin die. Movie: he was terrified and Orin died really quickly. In the play, he tricked Mushnik into going into Audrey II's mouth. Movie: he moved him closer and Mushnik basically fed himself to the plant. We don't feel Seymour's as guilty of murder in the movie, so this ending feels too harsh. This ending carries more emotion (I like that), but the other fits the events more.
@UnMlynarczyk On the other hand the omission of these key scenes allows the film to deliver a much grimer message, and that lesson is that standing by and letting something happen can be just as bad as doing the deed yourself.
I suppose both endings have their place and they're both fine, but this one is how I know the story. Dark, no BS, unhappy ending. While we're making everything happy and nice for the panty-waist test audience, might as well have kept the others alive; had Orin reform and be a nice dentist/boyfriend after rehab, and maybe we'll see clips of Mr. Mushnik over at Seymour's and Audrey's little house for Thanksgiving dinner at age 83. Heh.
He didn't feed his boss, the boss backed in and fell, Orin was deserving for all the many karma inducing things he did, and Audrey 1 doesn't deserve anything.
This ending is actually light hearted compared to how the original movie ends. Especially since the buds in this version dont show the faces of the victims fed to the plant. And Seymour really didn't mean it in this one.
This is one of the instances where I'm glad the better ending, and this IS the better ending, got cut. I much prefer the more cliche happy-ever-after ending this time around, which is rare for me. Just love these characters too much to give a damn about the lesson in morality this ending is trying to teach.
Interesting fact about Audrey's death: in the musical, she took a sominex and actually fell asleep after singing her reprise, so technically, she didn't die until she was fed to the plant. But in this scene, they cut the sominex part out, so really, she DID get killed by the plant. Makes you wonder, which is more tragic? Her dying and getting eaten, or her living but still getting eaten?
I heard that even the actors preferred this ending. Stupid test audience. This is a cool ending. Even though I'm usually a happy ending person, this ending is much more entertaining. And not as cliche.
@Orlor @ Kikefriki I'm done trying to convince you people myself. Here is a well-written, well thought-out article on the endings. If you still have any objections after reading it, please contact me. h t t p : / / m o n d o m u s i c a l s . b l o g s p o t . c o m / 2 0 0 8 / 0 9 / l i t t l e - s h o p - m a r y - p o p p i n s - o f - 8 0 s . h t m l
It's in black and white because it was just an early copy. There actually WAS a colored version of this scene, but it accidently got destroyed, I guess.

@TheAnnaGurlisBack well, that makes sense. This movie is based on a stage musical, and this is the ending they used in the original stage version.

I may be a little creepy, but I enjoyed the original ending. I think the other was just a little too tidy

It's in black and white because it was just an early copy. There actually WAS a colored version of this scene, but it accidently got destroyed, I guess.
