  • The Long drum Solo is what todays music lacks. Everybody uses "solo in a can' for that now. Well I decided as a keyboardist I am avoiding all techno cheats If it ain't the real me or bandmates doing solos you won't see my band. Fuck prima donnas like Bieber who are too good to use original un-precorded musicians. Shove your canned tracks in ur ass!!

  • @jkeene58 yes absolutely a little bit of digital delay

  • Yeah yah yah...smothers brothers ....... smothers were "too kool for the 1960's".....is that possible???... I think so...the honor goes to a few select fuckers...tommmy smothers was disrespected by cbs network.... he was too " controversial".......the beatles were too kool too...but tommy and dick were certainly too kool for the squares.....steppenwolf on networfk t.v.!!!!!..........dig it

  • had to do a double take..Nick St. Nicholas on bass kind of looks a little like Kim Fowley (when Fowley was young)! i dunno i used a lot of LSD growing up...haha. so....

  • I think that its not lip syncing but rather that the filming. Back then, there were lots of movies and videos where the voices heard didnt match the movement of the lips. This was due to bad sync in the movie clips. Even today, if you really closely watch a reporter on a news show or anyone who is speaking, sometimes the words dont match the mouth movements.

  • It's too bad they were forced to lip sync their songs back then. Still, it's a great song!

  • @sublimy99 wtf you mean lip sync they didnt start lipsyncing till the 80's or at least i think it was 80's

  • @edyoung44 , they always lip synced back in the 60's 70's. you have no fucking idea what you are talking about, so stfu!!!!!! Typical youtube know nothing, Look shit up before you spew your non sense.Almost every performance(If not every) on the Ed sullivan show and Dick Clarks band stand, was lip synced. That is a fact.

  • @sublimy99 you STFU!!! and second of all i kinda figure cause they ddidnt always seem to mmouth the same wordss

  • Comment removed

  • @edyoung44 , seriously, make up your mind. You attack me cause you are positive, maybe, I think they started lip syncing in the 80's, umm 90's..um 70, s I mean the words weren't the same as their mouth so..mm I kinda knew but I'm kind a special and mmm dum dee dum my name is ed, yeah, I'm special ed.

  • @sublimy99 you know what fine they did lipsync in the 60's every single damn band and they arent talented oh but i wouldnt know anything about it cause im too busy being an asshole about something that doesnt need to be expressed and made a big deal of but my name is sublimy99 so whatcha gonna do

  • @edyoung44 , you know what special ed, you started this. I made a simple, but true comment. So, you, in typical ( i feel the need to reply like an asshole) youtube response. You had to attack me. BTW, this last attack/retort was as weak as they come. Give me something to work with. Your responding at the level of someone in the seventh grade. Please Mommy, make it stop!!!!! This man is ruining what little respect I had for mankind.

  • @edyoung44, Oh, and another typical youtube blunder, taking things way, way, out of context. I love the bands of the 60's and on. I am a fan of Steppenwolf. I just happen to know they "had" to lip sync. It was required back then. It doesn't say anything about the bands. Everyone knows all those great bands played live and they did well and many of them recorded live albums, but when you went on tv, the standards were different.

  • @sublimy99 lets jsut stop arguing and enjoy the video alright every band kicks ass lets let bygons be bygons

  • @edyoung44 fine! Agreed!

  • @edyoung44 "Sometimes lip-synching performances are forced by television for short guest appearances, as it requires less time for rehearsals and hugely simplifies the process of sound mixing."-wikipedia, that explains everything.and in other cases (live or studio) they didn't use voice modificators or lip syncing.they didn't need cause john had a great voice.and they had a great potential which was well accepted too (they sold over 25 million albums) by the public.sorry but you're insulting.

  • Too cool!! Miss them!! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • Is he saying justin bieber or just a baby at 0:20?

  • @dylancollver LMAO i heard that too, i think he predicted the future but it took a turn for the worst

  • Nice Rickenbacker AX. Wish I had one like that....

  • acid rock rules

  • I do believe they belong in the "ROCK &ROLL HALL OF FAME" I absolutely love their music.

  • damn, I need one of them fringed jackets!

  • An excellent song. Great music !!!

    G.C.P

  • Bards; for shizzle !!! Love them.

  • Rock Me Baby Rock Me Baby All Night Long! What's left to say?

  • Vintage rock at its best. After looking at and listening to the Wolf, most bands look and sound like pretenders. Steppenwolf was to hard rock what the Beatles were to pop music. Yeah, imagine, we got this music over AM transistor radio and we didn't have to pay for a satellite feed from some vendor. Man its embarrassing what the music industry has become. There are still some good bands but when you have to concentrate on selling T-shirts to make a living, it takes it toll. Anyone for MP3s.

  • John Kay looks like my friend Mary

  • Awesome +10

  • This was hard and heavy before there was hard and heavy.

  • @nholt you're wrong... ;) there are a lot of good bands... listen to plastic thunder - bitter creek

  • love it but like to hear The pUSHER Man. haha

  • YESSS!!!!!!!

  • This is mime but who cares??? This is a classic Steppenwolf song which is from the dorm in '69. We drank gallons of beer listening to this and others of their GOOD songs, and we NEVER allowed Born To Be Wild or Magic Carpet Ride to be played. Kids nowadays think that they only recorded those two grossly overplayed songs, and that is a shame!

  • on 0:21 he sais ''no justin bieber''

  • @osscar99 :o

  • brings me back to my 16 year old day...makes me feel like sparking up a dube!

  • I was squad leader in Vietnam, UMCS. We had transistor radios, and we could pick upAFARS from Saigon. During a firefight, one marine threw his radio like a grenade and he had it turned it up so loud -BORN TO BE WILD> That they just hauled ass, Instsead of getting ambushed. We broke and spread, covered our flanks, and we we're saved by STEPPENWOLF. It was the rock and roll war.

  • @balanb312 Wow, that's a heavy story. Thanks for telling us about it...

  • 0:20 "no Justin Bieber"

  • @TheAvtobus hahahaa

  • @TheAvtobus Though just a baby" :D

  • LOVE <3 great stuff. if only i could find a band like this today. its not easy for an 18 yr old girl to live in a world with shitty music. im just thankful this stuff is on youtube.

  • Not having Steppenwolf in the R & R Hall of Fame is sort of like, well.....not having Steppenwolf in the HOF !! What the HELL are they thinking of ????????

  • Steppenwolf were an Anti-drugs band right?

  • @ThePaintersPX words say yes but we were into the music more than the words at the time, so no worries ;)

  • @ThePaintersPX not at all

  • 0.21 ''no justin bieber''

  • @fruttekut Holy shit, they were psychic, haha.

  • they threw down @ 2:05- 3:15 heelllll yeah!!! they kick so much ass! bruce lee would be jealous!

  • one second while im off buying a leather jacket and a rickenbacker

  • I'm glad they had the foresight to invest in some really good chandeliers.

  • did he have a facial PIMPLE-ECTOMY,the singer????long live punk n oi n ska

  • hahahaha 0:20 justin bieber

  • Do you remember that?

Sex Drugs and Rock N Roll

  • They were my favorite band back in the 60's!,....by the way i want the the bass players on!!!! :)

  • Steppenwolf = the best stoned music ever.

  • @64katydid maybe it's just a<n image and he isn't really high

  • 0:22 HE SAYS JUSTIN BIEBER

  • They were my very first concert ever!..My best friends mom took us when we were only 10 at the Century 21 in Wichita..it was sweet..John Kay and his clear Acrylic guitar!

  • How did blondie get thru this He is so high in evey video I have seen lol

  • The main reason Kay wore the shades was because his eyes were extremely light sensitive although yes he was also color and legally blind as well.

  • 1969 was a good year for Rock n Roll music songs besides "Rock ME" there also was "Come Together" by The Beatles. "Honky Tonk Women" By The Rolling Stones". "Touch Me" by The Doors". "Fortunate Son" by CCR. The Smoothers Brothers were cool to have rock bands such as Steppenwolf on their TV comedy show. In the late 60's and early 70's in my house were dare not missed any appearance of The Wolf on tv. They took priorty over all other bands we watched...

  • this is one of my most favorite few hundred steppenwolf songs out there

  • I met John Kay 30 years ago, he was the nicest guy you could ever meet but also seemed tough as nails at the same time.

  • In the Top 40 that year, 1969, besides "Rock Me", there were songs titled "Let Me" (Paul Revere & The Raiders) and "Touch Me" (the Doors, of course). Just a bit of rock & roll trivia: Rock Me, Let Me, Touch Me.

  • no kidding. so I was right. He is blind.Poor guy. Well I hope being a rock star made up for it. I read that his mom brought him into Canada from East Germany I was listening to the bass line from Born to be Wild today. Pretty Creative. Most bass parts from that era were very simplistic. I have a friend who was a biker for awhile. he went to a concert and Kay showed up and the older guys went nuts, but he never heard of him. I figured they knew him from the Easy Rider soundtrack. Good music

  • not only was he legally blind, but i do believe he was from east germany

  • @baldur1377 Thanks. Now the search begins!

  • I've always loved this band. many of their lyrics were quasi spiritual /advice giving . John Kay is definitely cool. Turned a lot of teens on to the blues. I had a running debate with my GF whether Kay was blind, cause he was always wearing shades. Long live Steppenwolf

  • @tomwise1us kay is considered legally blind because he is totally color blind.

  • I've always loved this band. most of their lyrics were quasi spiritual advice giving

  • 0:19 he says " no justin bieber"

  • @frampie64 Wow. That's pretty fucked up hahahahahahahaha. It's like Jon Kay could tell the future of shitty music!

  • Was this on the 'flip side' of the Magic Carpet Ride single?

  • must be a fuck load of stoners listening to this... missing the like button 20 times so far and all...

  • @brandonhornsby this is stoner rock lol

  • @TyleX2010 glad to see ya got the inside joke :D

  • The Hall of Fame doesn't deserve the dirt off John Kay's shoes. He's got more class in his baby finger than all the corporate jerk wads in the Hall of Fame combined

  • John Kay had problems with his eyes. That's why he wore the sunglasses.

He didn't have to try to be cool. Why try to be something you already have going on?

  • He was also the first to use the term 'heavey metal' in a song or should I say Rock anthem

  • This is so freakin' cool......

  • VERY KEWL....

  • As far as I'm concerned, the R&R Hall of Fame can kiss RUSH and Steppenwolf's ass. I met John Kay in the 70's and he was the nicest and coolest guy you could ever meet. You also knew he could kick the crap out of you in 2 seconds if you pissed him off.

  • My very first concert - awesome!

  • Chrystal Palace Is This The Future!

  • foxyroxstar..Fox! Rock's Czar!..Conquer You!

  • Love this song. It is featured in the movie "Candy" with Peter Sellers and Yule Brenner. Anyone know where I can find a copy of that? (Made around 1970)

  • 19 people wish that they would have bought dental floss

  • @USMC2nd Make that MENTAL floss!!!!

  • @USMC2nd

IED IED IED IED IED IED

  • tO be honest those sunglasses look just ridiculous

  • @excabilus Those sunglasses happen to be very much in fashion right now.

  • john kay and company made the late 60s alot of fun!!

  • Back in the day when lipsink was typical.

  • Is this a dutch band? Cuz steppenwolf is a dutch word :)

  • @rhettcoolgek John Kay was from Edmonton, the rest are American.

  • @mckessa17 John is from Germany

  • @K3Harn correct.....Communist controlled East Germany........ That is why his lyrics are so political. I consider Monster his finest work and 40 years later it is still relevant, unfortunately, for america.

  • @K3Harn correct.....Communist controlled East Germany........ That is why his lyrics are so political. I consider Monster his finest work and 40 years later it is still relevant if not more so.

  • Great song. Had the 45. But then again it reminds me of my girlfriend in the late 60's. Damn, It's been about 40 years since I've seen her and I dont know where the hell she is. Damn, Cathy. I still love you wherever you are.

  • I know its kinda gross, but I would do all those guys right now. Kay's voice makes me want to cum all over his face.

  • I wonder if Toni Tenille was copying Kay's hair do.

  • @maryquant1967 I knew there was a line there somewhere, and you said it for me.

    Thanks!

  • Nick looks higher than a kite here! :-D

  • NOBODY can sing like John Kay! His voice is in a league of its own!

  • @AdamsApple1963

You got that right. Soul-filled and strong.

  • @AdamsApple1963 Except for maybe Robert Plant :)

    Peace and Love

  • the pusher the best!!!!!!!!!!

  • I would have liked to see the whole show.

  • John Kay was from East Prussia, which in 1969 was bisected by the Soviet Union and Poland. He is ethnically German and you can hear that in his voice if you listen closely. This song followed their first two LPs, released I think in the Summer of 1969. This buffers too much, however.

  • This is one of the greatest over looked gems in rock history. Peace.

  • I LOVED THAT MUSIC,I HAVE SO MANY MISSING DAINOVAÇÃO MUSICALLLLLL!!!!!

  • Don't worry about being in the rock and roll hall of fame. Leon Russell is not there either. It's a meaningless institution. It makes money for the people that run it. that' s about all.

  • This is Dylan lyrics with Rolling Stones doing the three chord drive. It's about as perfect as you can do in the genre of rock. Nothing better!!!

  • Actually Steppenwolf was born to be Canadian. The original band was called The Sparrows and was based in Toronto

  • Loved this song.

Never got to see Steppenwolf live, as they never came to my little corner of the world.

Thank God for YouTube and archival film like this!

  • John Kay a visionary? Dam straight. If you liked SteppenWolf'$ recording$, they really deliverd live. John Kay'$ $lide guitar work me$merizing / tran$cendant / other wordly \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

  • a great tune to listen to while getting chemo

  • First time I've seen John Kay w/a guitar - cool. Love this song, classic!

  • yeah steppenwolf are sound, apart from born to be wild, ugh

  • One of the best and most memorable jams to come out of the sixties!

    Better living through chemistry 0:40

  • this and red hot chili peppers are my favorite bands besides tenacious d of course

  • @ieffinglovethisband well,2 out 3 ain't bad how can anyone like tenacious d garbage-----that duo is a joke

  • @tedGEGI Yea, tenacious D is a joke. Thats the whole point of them. Their music is jokes, its funny. It's comedy in music form. Just because you dont like them doesnt mean they're garbage.

  • OMG!!!

    Willy Wonka is blind!!!!

    Where's the Oompa-Loompas??

    XD

  • that's Ann Wilson, if you didn't know! :D

  • look up

Heart magic man, 5th video down!

  • What if.......

1960's John Kay did a duet with 1970's Ann Wilson?

  • You're right, they are a very distinctive-looking group. I like the trippy camera-work on this video, also the strange crystal objects and chandeliers. I think the late sixties to late seventies was a kind of last flourishing of popular culture as art. Today we are in a time of despairing decadence in the inevitable lead up to worldwide currency collapse and the final implosion of civilization.

  • Very sexy song!

  • also saw edgar winter in same bar different time

  • john kay walk right in front of me as they were entering to play in a bar in Va. Beach,I said,"Cnanda, yeah" he didn't reply and kept on to the stage where they rocked

  • Hours and hours spent listening to this band and trying to pick up bass lines off vinyl- the bass player was very underrated

  • This was my first psychedelic rock concert in Fort Worth. I wore a miniskirt ensemble with a hat and a long scarf around it and on my hips. I had long dark hair and I thought I looked really hip. This was a tripping experience for me but it was tame to what was about to hit the scene!

  • @rtt8001 i know why its not in rock n' roll hall of fame its because its Bullshit and its not even rock n roll thats why = )

  • @bobbob53629

what the hell is wrong with you!

  • @bobbob53629 You're a moron

  • @bobbob53629 fuck you and your rap

  • @robertavatar but my dear! i dont like rap i like real Rock N Roll not like this bullshit

  • Great lip synching, I dont recall this being recorded with the drummer using brushes----oh well graet song anyway

  • cow bell deluxe baby!!!!!!

  • LOVE THIS TUNE!!

  • John is a true rocker who, like , Richard Manuel, has been missed by rockers, who should care a hell of a lot more!

  • @shirpet44 Can I get an AMEN?!

  • another thing i dont understand is why they never say anything about a grat bass player rushdin murray i dont know i is the rigth spelling, they only mention the daisy bass p;ayer

  • bcak in this same time i was in a rock band doing cover of steppenwolf, cream jimmy hendrix, ccr and others our job was sound just like the record and key should be the same as the one in the record and we did a great job, we use to play m ot the songs of sreppenwolfs the second. the only particular thing was we were down in rio de janeiro brazil, and the name of the band was os siderais

  • Oh my, one of my favourite bands. Those were the days my friend, those were the days.

  • It really is a crime they're not in the RRHOF. Think of all the crap bands/performers that are in yet they keep Steppenwolf out!!! What a fuc###g joke!

  • @jdeweyhs I so agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great Rock band with strong blues hints... John Kay was not into drugs or the drug culture, maybe they hold that against him... he didn't toke and snort with the right crowd?

  • thats so good

  • Another reason the RRHF is a joke. These guys influenced a generation. They will probably wait till they are all dead. Remember how long it took them to recognize Paul McCartney?

  • My head, it won't stop boppin' and rockin', this song just kicks some majoy arse.

Peace to all the world, listen to the good rock and roll, listen to each other, listen to yourselves. You'll find what you are looking for, no matter how deep you look, no matter where, no matter why.

    I Love Steppenwolf!!!

    Ohkwa:ri'

  • @Howage1 what ablast from the past!!! love it. thanks for sharing this. peace!!:-))) hah! could dance to this all day!!!

  • @Howage1

Wow, you are rocking ☺ thank you.

  • @LadyQuaintly,

When I watch good old rock n' roll I can't help but rock out. Nice to see you around LadyQuaintly.

    Ohkwa:ri'

  • I CAN'T TURN THIS UP ENOUGH!

    Ohkwa"ri'

  • Lost souls will find what they can. It matters not whether they are male or female. In this case it is a woman looking for herself and finding all the problems with the world. In the sixties and seventies we all looked and found. What we found mostly was "each other", "ourselves", and a F@cked up world. Today is No different, except that what we find is "closed doors", "closed minds" and a F@cked up world...

    Ohkwa:ri' - your brother Bear

  • @Howage1 World is world and independant of our wishes. What's F@cked up s the virtual realites we call societies. All based on imaginary origins and imaginary endings with supposedly that we act in accordance to deities intent. .

I don't know where we come from

Don't know where we're goin' to

But if all this should have a reason

We would be the last to know

just told me I had to face the reality that human knowledge of the world we're in is still in it's infancy.

  • great,,,,,,')

  • @songinwind

Ohhhh yeahhhh, Love the oldies, this song just gets me going.

    Love ya Sandra.

    Ohkwa:ri'

  • one of my old favorites. it may have been better without all of those overdubs, though.

  • Happy Birthday John!!! 4-12-2010

  • perhaps they were too unique and escaped classification

  • Ok. I'm an old foggie. Who is the guy wearing the table cloth?

  • Love this song! Great music, great vocals. Thanx for posting!

  • Great point RTT...WHY R THEY NOT IN THE HALL but yet they put in a pop group by the name of ABBA!!! They're not rock!! abba doesn't hold a candle to the likes of Steppenwolf... and others that r not yet there..
