It's an unlocked GSM phone, so it will work with any GSM service out there.

It's a GSM phone, so it depends where you are. If you're in the USA, you can use this with T-Mobile or AT&T for instance. In Canada, it's Rogers or Fido.

So much cheaper? Yes, it is, but the iPhone is carrier-locked and subsidized. An unlocked, non-subsidized phone that can be used on any GSM network is always going to be more expensive. That's just the way the system works.
