  • Here's a tip ,use 2 Quarters (that's about 1/8") that's my preferance, for both sides . The treble bit is too extreme with one Quarter (1/16") .I use 2 Quarters and a dime for hotter Bridge pickups. But most important .USE YOUR EARS ! I always re-adjust my pickups after I get my guitar back from the guitar tech.

  • now that makes sense, 1,6 mm, incidentally also known as the divine proportion. But I do have lace sensors and think I need some adjustment on the treble side since my high E or B keeps falling out of tune cause I got em set up as close as possible.

  • Thanks for the video. Pickup height is very important!

  • What guitar is that? Fender Stratocaster what?

  • This really helped! I got a new american standard strat and had so much trouble getting it to intonate correctly and have that strat sound now it sounds a lot fuller. one problem is the recommended pickup height for the bridge pickup is just too sharp on the treble side i set it as you instructed but i might just take it town a tiny bit.

  • Which is exactly what I'm saying in this video ... Bass side 1/8", Treble side 1/16" for STARTERS... Do what sounds best to you !

  • Does setting string height on single coil pickups vary with hot pickups?

  • Good vid!...

..and I dont think this whole vid is wrong!!!

Its just a good neutral starting point..

Everyone has there own particular taste when it comes to strats...but i would say again... Start here....then use your ears!..

  • this whole video is wrong for a strat. for that crazy quacky (in between, 2&4 position) sound , do this : middle pickup down as u can, neck : bass side down, treble high. bridge : medium to high everywhere. also as said here somewhere, u dont need any of these tools, just ur ears !!!

  • Lace sensors have exponentially LESS magnet pull to them, so I'd set them as close as possible without the strings hitting the top. As close as palm muting and heavy picking will allow

  • @535C3 so, are the adjustments for the treble and bass sides respectively in the same height measurement? 1/16" for treble and 1/8" for bass? or there is a need for a little higher adjustment in measurements?

by the way, this video of yours helped me... thank you for answering my comment... i just wanted to make my vintage american deluxe strat to have full of tone whenever i want to play music...

  • how about for fender lace sensor pickups? how do i adjust my pickups since lace sensor pickups have no pole pieces?

  • Can you take the pickup cover off before you put it on a guitar?

  • Strat owner's manual says only 5/16" on the bass side.

  • Pickups are not magnetic by nature, they are magnetic by design. !!

  • @celticlofts They are actually magnetic by the nature of their design... Lol

  • 2:14

  • so the magnets are at different levels on each pickup. Can I adjust each magnet height individually?

  • im wondering if anyone can help me with this situation i have noticed that certain frets buzz when played over my middle pickup and bridge pick up but if i play the same fret and play at my neck pickup the fret doesnt buzz does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

  • @TheGreendaybumbuddy what guitar do you have? most of the time its build quality: nut and frets

  • i have owned many guitars, including about a dozen strats. i am setting up a classic series 60s strat now. just got it used. i have never had any single coils with such pull. i have them just about flush with the pickguard. the staggered pole pieces are tall and they pull a lot. lots of that warble from the field of them.

  • Thank you for this information.

  • @Stringprodigy how so? Music is science :). It is a very strict thing. Well it depends on equipment but your ears aren't as science.

  • @LucaTurilli89 Sorry, music isn't science.

    "Your ears aren't as science"

    That makes no sense.

  • @Stringprodigy my point was it was calculated with a scientific method what is the best height of the strings compared to the sound they make. Electromagnetism ;).

  • @LucaTurilli89 Sorry but that is complete bullshit.

  • @Stringprodigy I guess based on ears because of the difference of the pickups? Humbuckers are more powerful and because of that yes/no?

  • I used those heights in my Strat and now it's perfect! Any advice for a great setup for humbuckers pickups? Should I keep the bass side a lot more away from the strings like you do with single coils?

  • Why do some keep using IMPERIAL measurements? Were in the 21st century now people, lets start using METRIC measurements. Greater accuracy, Less brain damage.

  • wait do i need to do this when i bought my new guitar or my new guitar is already setup?

  • Hi... Could you do another video for telecaster?

  • ive got a epiphone lp, with single elnico coil pickups, any body know the setting for such guitar. cheers.

  • we've got our 1/16 clearence

  • You ROCK sir!!

  • Thank You!

by the way, for the metric system users its:

    3,2 mm 6th string.

    1,6 mm 1st string

    Rock On!

  • @bobhope7 Thank you! That's all I was thinking during the video!

  • With Bass pickups, you have to provide for more distance from the string to pole piece, because the string's diameter is larger, and vibrates in a larger circular plane.

Try adjusting the pole pieces on the Low "E" side to 3/16th's of an inch, and the pole pieces on the "G" side to 1/8" for starters ... Listen for false overtones or a 'warbly' tone to the fundamentals ... if you're hearing that, back 'em off by about 1/16" and see if that cleared it up. Don't get too close to the strings

  • Will, I used your heights for my Strat and they sound great. I thought the high strings would be too ice pick sounding with the pickup that high on the treble side but with the bass side lower, it appeared to warm up the high end. Maybe I am just imagining this but no matter, it sounds great! What height do I set the Duncan Quarter pound pickups on my Fender P-bass? It always confused me with having one pickup for the two bass strings and another for the two treble strings. - Mike

  • Good job!

  • This is very helpful, but I wonder if you can clarify something?

In the middle of the vid, you say that clearance should be measured from the top of the pole-piece to the top of the string. At the end, you say it's the top of the pole-piece to the *bottom* of the string.

    Which is right?
