  • The people who loved this story line on GH are just as sick as the story itself. I remember it and quit watching the show because they turned the rape into a romance. Sick, sick, sick.

  • wow who was that guy at the very end when laura screamed/

  • Wonder if it was a quickie!

  • ummm....this is a stupid soap opera that aired over thirty years ago...why are you arguing about this?

  • You people are sick.

The man in this situation is not a pathologic rapist, he just lost it. He's not dangerous to the society. Of course what he did is wrong, but it's only for the victim to decide whether to forgive him or not.

She goes to the police - ok, have him arrested and punished.

She forgives him and marries him - fine, what's so wrong about forgiving somebody who is deeply regretful?

  • First and formost RAPE is wrong horrible and should NEVER be considered anything other than the violent crime it is

That said Luke and Laura love story no matter how twisted is a GH legend which is why I think the rape should've been discussed at Luke intervention because obviously Luke was drunk

The way I see it if being reminded that drinking heavily was a factor in you attacking the person who you love most couldn't convince you to give up the bottle I don't know what would JMO

  • Rape ain't love!

  • I can't believe this was even allowed to air on TV, its mindbogglingly pathetic and offensive.

  • Psychologically I just don't understand how someone can marry her rapist.

  • i know rape is bad, but does anyone find the disco music hilarious

  • sooprizebutt secks

  • Wow, that is one passionate man. I'll take him.

  • No is no, rape is rape, who gives a shit. the bitch should have left when he told her to. oh well cant blame th man for wanting some cooch before he dies

  • @eftultimate wow...ur sorry excuse for a man, even more for a human being.

  • @peace378ify so what. her ass should have left.

  • @eftultimate what if that was your mom or your sister, or your girlfriend that was raped?

  • um why is his life over anyway??? i dont understand!

  • all those men who rape, should be found and send to an island

  • @JonnaJacobsen1995 yeah send to rape island and there get their dicks chopped off ^_^

  • @AnimalLover881 hell yeah!!! >:D

  • is the fountain that Laura runs to at the end also the same place that elizabeth was raped at? If so, fantastic detail in the writing by whomever was in charge in the late 90s considering where that story went.

Also, who is it that found Laura at the end?

  • @MenaceFan I think it was luke because if u watch Liz's it replays that luke was there

  • Lame. I broke out my lube for nothing.

  • Luke is a horrible actor. Thumbs up if you agree!

  • I was 15 at the time and thought it was disgusting. I wouldnt watch the wedding later, and never was a fan of Luke and Laura.

  • I don't see how she could forgive a man who raped her after she tried to be friends with him and help him. Trusted him enough to be alone with him. Not only that but everything else that happens after that night. Trust him again have feelings for him, the woman must be crazy. The fact that he raped her at one point makes the whole love affair sick and twisted. Whoever wrote the rape in the story later to have them fall in love must have some perverse ideas about rape and love..

  • I remember when I was a youngster this was one of the most talked about scenes back in the 80's. They took rape lightly back then. I believe they still do to this day. Luke was stalking Laura...and I find it disturbing that they would of wrote this into a script back then and I AM a Man. Rape is NERVER OK. The woman could be in her birthday suit and on a silver platter. This would not make it ok......NO IS NO.........

  • i don't understand why people who think L&L are offensive are watching these clips in the first place...in real life i would find it offensive...but it's soap opera land people, totally fictional where people do offensive despicable unforgivable things and then are forgiven and somehow redeamed. you can't make sense of it b/c surprise surprise it's not real.

  • It was a very complex situation, Luke did not want to do that, he did love her extremely so, and she loved him. This comes out later that she loved him at first sight yet said no with her lips but not with all her other actions. I saw this and felt bad for both of them, that he had hurt someone he loved, when that was not want he really wanted to do. He does end up loving her extremely so later.

  • @VenusInPisces so if you love someone youre gonna rape her? make it be seen for an specialist, FOOL

  • @nacamo17 not sure what your last sentence means. This was a very complex situation, and Luke was living in and had been raised in violence, he transformed greatly through out the show, and Laura helped him be the true loving man he was inside. It was not black or white. He flipped out, and a horrible thing was done, but they healed and transformed, and loved each other better than most do. It was very interesting and beautiful to see the transformation between them and in him.

  • My mom told me about this. I was under the impression Laura had forgiven Luke 'cause he wasn't supposed to be in his right mind or something like that.

  • Victims falling in love with their rapists is rare but not unheard of.The victims convince themselves that they can "change" the rapist or take away their demons.

  • This made Luke and Laura the hottest daytime couple ever with 30 million routing for them to marry. Nobody wanted Laura to stay with her husband Scottie!

  • Who was the person Laura saw at the well ?

  • @MrCraigblaze The man who frightened Laura at the well turned out to be a cop (who says there's never a cop around when you need one?). Laura reported the rape but said she couldn't identify her attacker, which started the long drawn-out saga of Luke & Laura.

  • Whoa i wish i was as high as the director.

  • I'm surprised people were ok with this.

  • @talltom1973 GH only got away with this because at the time, both the producer and the headwriter were female, so the show couldn't be accused of male chauvinism. Interestingly, the previous headwriter, Douglas Marland, quit the show because he did NOT want to write this story.

  • I reckon he got a "Rise" out of Herb Albert.

No WONDER disco is Dead. lol

  • This was very common in soap operas in those days especially in the late 60's to 70's. It was nothing to just throw a rape storyline into the pile.

  • No other scene in the history of the soaps came close to this. The beginning of the ONLY love story of all time and to survive through parts of the 80s and 90s. I missed most of that unfortunately. Then Laura's mental return in 2006 which saddened me tremendously with how her mother and how Laura had aged, changed and life on GH continued without Luke and Laura remaining together for all time. Maybe the 40th anniversary of the rape, will this happen.

  • wat is this song called again?

  • Even though he raped her, it's hard to take this scene seriously, especially with Luke's campy dialogue ("I'm gonna be KILLED, Little lady!")

  • I thinks it is meant like : U are just a little girl . u are to young to understand. Don´t bug u pretty head with it. Go home little girl!(dismay endeed) He´s pisst ... and afraid.U can hear that...

  • who did she see in the end? Luc?

  • Only men with small penises rape.

  • lmao wtf nooooooo

  • What a minute...she MARRIED a guy who RAPED her???

No wonder I was never into soap operas.

  • very well put!

  • Absolultely NOTHING makes rape okay at any time. Luke should've been put in prison for what he did to Laura. Rape is violence it's NOT any form of love. The fact that they married was even more offensive and disgusting to me as a female.

  • ugh chill has a month ta live...... how long can they put him in prison for by time they get to trial and duznt seem to me like he actually raped her all he did wuz drag her to the ground an unbutton hiz shirt

rape isnt ok im not sayin it iz but lol its not like this is the news we're watchin

  • @DawnYzag Thank you! Me too!!

  • @DawnYzag What about high hormone levels?

  • @DawnYzag Luke raped Laura, but it was not violent. It was quit gentle. He loved Laura. He was obsessed with her. What he did was wrong, but it put most if not all of the conceived notions of rape down the drain. He didn't rape her because of hate. He was not violent. He may have controlled her but it was for love, not hate. I'm a 49

year old male. I remember hearing about this scene, but this is the first I've seen it. I heard no screams or struggles. Just an old familiar disco tune.

  • @headley62 Rape is a crime of violence no matter what. Luke is and always will be a rapist and he should've been punished for it. Having his victim fall in love with him and spend 25 years pretending that it didn't happened is an insult to anyone that is a victim of rape. GH writers should've been more conscious of that.

  • @DawnYzag Have to agree with you on that one. Soaps havent always treated rape responsibly. Well they have recently but now now.

  • @DawnYzag IT'S A SOAP OPERA!

  • Heat baby heat. LUKE AND LAURA FOREVER

  • LnL is a classic Abulard and Heloise type story. He rapes her but she falls for him anyway...

  • ughhh and this was after the womyns movement happened?

Sure right [sarcasm] soo many folks get raped with back ground music, scented candles, etc?

Why is Luke barefoot while Laura's pumps and pantyhose are still in place?

  • Sickened me, too.

  • you're , a wee, bit sick ,i must say

  • She should have left......but then they probably wouldn't be married

  • so? She would have avoided the rape. The fact that she married her rapist doesn't make what he did ok.

  • stupid laura, she should have kicked his ass!

Oh well then she married him. lol

  • epic fail

  • Use the Force, Luke

  • Nice one!

  • that was a good one!

  • that sucked im sorry.... epic fail

  • How can Laura resist Luke's hip and happenin' afro?

  • lmfaoo hahaha, yea really

  • Turns out she couldn't, no one could.

  • Thanks for making me lmao.

  • hahah funy shitt

  • OMG how the hell did she manage to marry him?? this was awful no wonder scotty hates luke so much.

  • gh was soooooo good back then.

i bet alot of kids was faking sick during luke and laura days just to stay home from school and i was one of them.

  • General Hospital

  • What is GH?

  • Tony Geary was brought to GH as an unsavory character to help Bobby who loved Scotty. This rape sequence happened. After a while the Luke and Laura phenominem exploded and the writers at GH had to do a lot of backpedaling, calling it a seduction.

No one at GH at the time had a clue that L&L would become so popular.

  • So I watched GH when I was a young teen, maybe 10-12 with my mom when no one was around. I remember Luke & Laura being really inlove, with Lucky and all that, and some girl Lucky liked was raped and Laura took care of her. Now after seeing this, it kinda makes sense.

But alas, she married her damn rapist. Soap opera or not, good writing or not, hell great acting or not, this is the definition of why soap operas can never be taken seriously.

  • what happened after they cut it

  • oh my god, what happened after it cut??!!! somebody answer if u know!

  • Why Genie Francis was never considered for an Emmy that year boggles my mind. To think that she was 17 at the time and totally unprepared in her own life as far as dating and relationships were concerned blows me away.

  • Unfortunately there wasn't a younger actress category at that time because if there was she would have been gotten plenty of emmys back then. Hey I think she should've been put in the best actress category a long time ago, but that's just me.

  • Totally agree with you there. I love Tony Geary and what he brings to the table as an actor but Ms. Francis is just as much a talent as him. It's too bad TPTB can't see that.

  • I so agree. She worked just as hard as Tony Geary,(i like him too). There scenen's together were just amazing. They made you think they were really a couple and made us who grew up in that time want to skip classes just to see them.I wish they would have some of these on DVD.

  • So Glad to See Somebody (Maxineweiss), Remind Us That The Laura & Luke Attraction Started BEFORE Scott&Laura Were Even Married!! Who Remembers The Scene After The Wedding When Laura Loses A Borrowed Handkerchief, Asks Around About It, Then They Pan to Luke In His Office Pulling The Handkerchief Out Of His Desk Drawer. Sounds Creepy,I Know. BUT It Was At That Moment That 90% Of All Woman Fell In Love With Luke. Gloria KNEW What She Had BEFORE The Rape Scene! Remember We Were ALREADY Hooked.

  • The handkerchief thing wasn't a mutual attraction at work, fredbamber. That was Luke's obsession. "Sounds creepy, I know"...yes. Because it WAS.

Luke was obsessed with Laura, not QUITE from the moment he laid eyes on her, but close. But Laura was very much in love with Scotty at that time and hardly knew Luke existed, except as Bobbie's brother.

  • whose the man she screams at in the park at the end?

  • It doesnt show anything!

  • well it was the 70s lol

  • So this is what all the hype was about. I remember my grandmother telling me about this years ago.

  • OH ; ; I HATE THIS SCENE

  • me too i don't like it either i felt bad for laura she didn't deserve to get raped

  • she married her rapist because the screen writers at the time wrote it like that. The two were a hot couple and lots of fans at the time thought they were good together. IN reality now, we know after a rape there is no way a woman would willingly feel safe with the guy ever again.

  • hearing Genie scream "NO!" is still so chilling, and seeing her all desheveled and crying afterwards is really tough...I love how they had Luke seemingly in a daze, and when the phone rang he snapped out of it and realized what evil, monstrous actions he had just taken and he just breaks down....such wonderful writing

  • Producer Gloria Monty called it a 'forced seduction' and Luke does extend out his hand to Laura when he asks her to dance. So, there seemed to be some grey area. Although, Genie played it as rape. But the fact that she wouldn't name him as the rapist etc....It's probably not so unusual today, but that kind of thing was shocking to see back then.

  • It actually wasn't ridiculous. They were originally gonna kill off Tony Geary's character. But Roy Dilucca was leaving for nighttime TV, and they decided they couldn't kill off two people, so Tony Geary stayed. At the time, they didn't know Tony would be staying. It did bring conflict to the Laura and Scotty marriage, and Laura and Scotty had been fighting almost since the day they married--the credit card, the law books etc.... The Luke character was dreaming about Laura since September.

  • it was a ridiculous part of the story line. luke and laura were so freaking hot that your TV screen would smoke when they had a scene together.

it's so difficult to explain this, but all hardcore gh fans just sort of dismissed this rape scene. it was a dumb move on gh's part as far as i'm concerned.

everyone loved when they finally ended up together and their wedding...well, i don't have to tell you all, do i?

besides! laura could have broken luke in half if she wanted to. lol

  • bull shit

  • Only on a soap opera and only between actors who have a lot of onscreen chemistry could a rapist and a rape victim become the most romantic soap couple ever. I don't think most people when this first aired hated Luke at all after this scene. I was very young when I saw it and I know I didn't. His character was the most interesting on the show.

  • Your Right. NOBODY Hated Him. I Was 15yrs Old, BEFORE The Rape We Were All Running Home From School To See How This Luke & Laura Thing Would Work Out. The Heat Between Them Was Overwhelming For T.V. What Everyone Also Forgets Is That When This Rape Happened (?)The WHOLE DAMN COUNTRY Was Asking, Was It Rape? Or Did She Want Him? Hell We All Knew The Answer!! Even News Stations Were Asking The Question,LOL! In The 5 Minutes It Took This Scene To Happen, Tony Geary Became THE Man.

  • She TOTALLY wanted him. All the tears as she's running through the brambles are tears of joy lol.

  • No means NO

  • I hate to admit it, but Luke raped her.

  • That is such a lie, fredbamber. Not everybody was asking, "Was it rape?" It was quite clearly rape, which is why GH took so much heat later when they tried to backpeddle.

  • ew!

  • I hate that they are the all time greatest love story, and it started out like this. I always loved Luke's character, but this is just disgusting and belittles him so much.

  • wat program is this 4rm?????

  • didn't scotty beat up luke?

  • Yeah at Luke & Jennifer's wedding.

  • Michael Bolton?

  • Sorry to tell you but violence can't be love and fun!

  • no its not is RAPE!how can you think thats suprise sex!

  • wow..i never thought i would have seen this.. thank you thank you from a newbee

  • she married her "rapist" because she was already inlove with him, but couldn't deal with the reality of it

  • WOW! Genie Francis was gorgeous!

  • I never understood why Laura later married her rapist.

  • look at the videos posted by lukenlaurafan77, you will understand why she ended up with Luke.

  • Does anyone know the name of the song playing? Absolutely love it, but cannot place the name? Is it George Benson, and if so, what is the name? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • "Rise" by Herb Alpert

  • Rise by Herb Alpert

  • I remember watching this as a teenager. It is indeed a classic, from the acting to the music. I still watch General Hospital and Tony Geary is still one of the best actors on daytime. There will never be another Luke and Laura.

  • Wow cool to see youtube has this video from sooooo long ago strange story though was born in the 80's tooooo but I heard about it.

  • It's impossible to explain....

  • To everybody UNDER 40Yrs Old. The Heat Between Luke n Laura Started BEFORE The Rape Scene. Yes It Was Rape, Yet I Clearly Remember When This Episode Aired, And We All Knew It Was A Case Of Laura Wanted Luke,But Afraid Of Her Feelings For Him. I Wish I Could Explain How This Worked So Well, But I Don't Think It Is Possible To Understand It Unless You Were A Viewer From The Beginning.

  • Gloria Monty said this was raped and that is what it was no seduction here only in Luke's mind, Luke Raped Scotty's wife.

  • Wow that's hard to watch, but thanks for posting.

  • It's a good thing they backpeddled this and changed it to a 'seduction". or we wouldn't have the couple we have today.

  • OMG..he rapes her and then they get together. Its so bad.

  • But it worked & look at what they became a year later...

  • Stupid me, I didn't see the response to joeyb071 already here....I was born smack dab in the middle of the 80s but my love of disco is pretty strong.

  • Does anyone know where I can find the clip of Luke talking to Laura after this? Please xx

  • Im looking for the name of that song that was playing at that time in the Disco, can any one help me out?

  • The song is "Rise" by Herb Alpert.

  • Thank you, Ive been asking everyone & they all told me the wrong one!

  • The name of the song is Rise by Herb Alpert...

  • That's the most compelling case against disco I've ever seen.

  • Why on Earth did the writers pair those two up?

  • Because the audience was screaming for them. Tony and Genie had more chemistry and passion in their little pinkies than any other couple on television. Even the horror of a rape wasn't enough to stop the pairing from skyrocketing.

  • Laura is absolutely queen of the ugly cries.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. Since this is a big concern on GH right now with the custody stuff between Luke and Scottie, I wanted to know what happened. Thanks again!

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • omg wtf beam me up scottie!
