What did you use for the background on the first drawing that you showed? It came out really even and blended, and I can't get it like that with plain graphite.

hey there, use the smoothest paper possible, like printer paper smooth, preferably thin, draw on a smooth table, use a 9b pencil and press really hard with overlapping strokes. after that what i do to blend it extra smooth is i go back over that with a HB pencil (no.2) and blend it out, that works because HB is hard lead and it presses the 9b out, because 9b tends to lay down kinda "chunky" like a crayon . but i found this method works great. use woodless graphite pencils too for added ease

Me too! I have never gone to an art school in my life, and when I was in high school art I failed (it was because if I was not inspired by what we were doing I wouldn't put in the effort to do it :), but now that I have sent out a portfolio of my drawings to different university scholarship programs I've gotten full acceptance for all of them. It's weird how that works, eh?

How do you get such dark shading with graphite without ripping through the paper? What kind of paper do you use for those?

hey there, you can get that dark by using soft pencil like 8 or 9b graphite, the darkest end of the spectrum. i use paper that comes in a roll, i bought it at staples

im 23, well ive tried to take pictures of theman submited them to a few art competitions but i wasnt acepted (. it seems most art people dont consider working with pencils as art as much as say paint or other mediums. they think pencil art is something you do if you cant paint or something lol
