  • :22 "my plastic borrowed ship"...lol

  • kim mitchell's guitar solo's are fucking awesome!

  • 6 people have no class in stolen shoes.

  • I'm pretty sure that's Gary McCracken on the drums, great musician.

This band should've reached stardom, instead we ended up with bad 80's hair bands

  • I've never seen Kim Mitchell in concert. And this video proves, I should. ROCK ON!!!

  • Wow! Thanks for the memories, bigdaddydishrags!

  • can anyone tell me if pye dubios was writing with kim back then..or did that happen when kim went solo...and my favorite is universal juveniles!!!

  • @rockerrod100 yes Pye was writing with kim back then!

  • Long live MAX WEBSTER..

  • This must have been late 70s after the "Live Magnetic Air" release. Did Dave wear that Flyer's shirt at every damn gig ? Anyway great band , great songs, great guitar lines.

  • and now he is a dj gawd

  • Got to see Max on their reunion tour ... but this is very cool.. tks for posting

  • Every time I see this I think of Riff Raff in Rocky Horror.... Just sayin'

  • It was a blast from the past, it was great, just like Max thanks for the real rock n roll

  • 3:28-ish "Tomato juice...tomato juice."

  • Did the keyboard player bribe the soundman that night?

  • thats like very cool

  • hilarious.. i was like 14 at this show. shoulda got hit by a chip truck.

  • This musta been right at the end. That isnt Terry Wilkinson on the keys.

Did anyone here see the few short Klaatu tours with Dave Myles, Gary McCracken and Terry Wilkinson?

Now there was some magic that rivaled the Max Machine

  • use dto cover this in the late 90's. its one of my favorites...ok all of them are hehehe

  • I' ve been on their last German tour

  • @fenderred1, sadly, I never did...too bad, too. I used to worship Max Webster, & I still think they were one of the most underrated bands ever. I'd love to get a copy of this show.

  • I wish they had put this song on "Live Magnetic Air"

  • Well the 80 Barrie show has gotta be THE most bootlegged MW show in both audio and video, so not sure why the guy was surprised.....? That aside, I regularly sit and cry that KM's solo recordings did not have the same keyboard factors. A few of them are phenomenal, for sure, but oh, how many of them scream out for keyboard colourings! Without them, they sound like run-of-the-mill plodding strummers, which is a real shame. ARRANGEMENTS NEEDED, KIM!

  • 'I think you got the wrong band, I don't think we play that song.' LOLOL

  • this is so cool. i used to live in the same house as the keyboard player he tours with now. wicked!

  • Awesome treat to catch this clip!

Max Webster is tres rocky ! \

    \

    CRANK IT !

  • Bigdaddy you're my new best friend long live Max........ty ty for the posts

  • @mydrumkitrocks Late70's, early 80's Canadian TV

  • LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!

  • this video kicks soo much ass lol. big wow everytime i see it. what an awesome group .

  • Kim Mitchell is 'the' definition of Canadian eh! Now a great DJ on Q107! I did security for him and his band and he's sooo down to earth.

Way cool video man - good job on scoring it.

  • omg ...i was actually there

  • Back in the '80's I named the family dog "Max Webster" call name Max in honor of this band!!

  • You could always count on Max Webster or April wine backing up Rush in concert.

  • A friend who is a rabid Rush fanatic introduced me to MW, this the first time I have ever laid eyes on anything they did. Eclectic compostion structure...a hint of rocco period classical and a smear of Zappa. Really good. Gutiar\vocalist makes me think of a young Brian Eno...

  • @martianshoes Rush and Max were combined into Battlescar. Both old school Toronto bands.

  • What can I say about Max Webster that hasn't already been said? Especially before Kim went solo. I do remember being fifteen and trying to sneak into the bar on the Carlingwood Campus(?????) in Ottawa. I got to see about 30 seconds of 'Hangover' before I got the boot. Thanks for the post.

  • Finally, I get to see a clip of Mitchell without that stoopid OPP hat on his head! Guess he wasn't too much into baldness denial here. Anyways, nice to see these live Max Webster clips on YouTube. This was a great, friggin' band!

  • @gorillabelly1 Ya I agree. He's completely bald now, so be it, I say.

  • another first great snag

  • Gary Mc Kakin (sorry for the Ms spellining) is one of the best drummers ever! MLG New Yeas Eve, with Rush!!!! Ma: Rocked!!!!!!! (boy I'm snapped)

  • wow. that is rock an roll man. loved it. ty.

  • I was there man. Burnzy, where the hell are you?

  • One of my favourite high school bands. I remember first seeing the High Class album and thinking, wow, those are 4 ugly chicks! Waaait a minute, that one's a guy. Waaait a minute, so's that one! Waaaait a minute ... Awesome band though. Still have McCracken's drumstick around here somewhere.

  • keyboard player in the top 5 all time greats hands down

  • Man, where the hell did you get this? This concert was broadcast live on Q107 or whatever the hell it was, and I, as the most fanatical living Max Webster fan, taped it, and promptly lost the tape.

I had no idea there was video! Is there more? Please say yes.

  • I have the whole show on DVD

  • Well that is amazing. Is this something you might make available to others?

In any event thank you so much for posting this clip.

  • @BigDaddyDishrags can you upload it to a torrent, provide a link or make it available?

  • Saw this tour in Peterborough, I was 14 and hooked for life!!!

  • I saw these guys open for rush triumph and many more but, Never quite reached headliner ststus but, Did allot of shows in TO back in the 70`s

  • Bigdaddydishrags does it again!

I thought all the Wilcox was enough!!

    way to go, man!

    : )

  • all you Max Webster fans what's the song where Geddy Lee sang for them???

  • not for them ...with them ...Battlescar

  • battlescar

  • @RushRules4

    battlescar

  • they played at my highschool, they were great, rock on, peace

  • David Stone is the guy on keybds. Played all of the synth (and other keys) on Universal Juveniles. Also played with BB Gabor and Richie Blackmore's Rainbow.

  • Sublime.

  • Saw them at the PNE Forum for the Universal Juveniles tour. Up close and personal. Still have the t-shirt. You had to see them live to realize what a musical force they really were.

  • That is true Kim is an incredible guitar player along the lines of frank zappa

  • Looks like Kim on guitar, Gary on drums, and Dave Myles (any realtion to Alannah?) on bass. But who's the guy on keys? That doesn't look like Terry Atkinson.

  • yeah man they come from my hometown of srania ontario ontario canada and i am currently getting bass lessons from gary!

  • Sarnia...was just there a couple of months ago. So Gary plays bass AND drums?

  • well i guess so he also does guitar lessons

  • Canadas only glam band....but they sure kicked ass!!! Have all 5 cds (1976-80). A+++!

  • Everyone forgets what a great gunslinger he was and what a dandy band he had...

  • wild tune i was a kid

  • I saw them in a little bar across the border in Buffalo in around the same time .just saw Kim Micheal at cannel days Great and will always be :):) Julie from Canada!

  • that rocks!

  • Absolutely amazing -- one of the greatest bands, ever!! What a talent Kim Mitchell is...one of my favorite guitar players!

  • wow! that`s great - thanks for posting!

  • the guy on the keyboards looks like Terry Bradshaw!

  • Nice legs kim lol

  • cool band

  • too bad they didn't make it in the states like rush did. they had the tunes, i think it was just a luck factor and also heard that u.s labels would only sign so many canadian bands in the 70's.neil young, joni mitchell etc

  • Word was at the time, that the Americans thought Max sounded too much like Zappa, especially the 1st album

  • The first time I've experienced the Max Machine was way back in 1978 when they opened up for Genesis at the old CNE stadium. I've managed to scam my way to the front of the stage and got my first contact high.

The second time was when they played my high school the following year. My ears were still ringing from that show.

Back in the day, Max was Rawk. It's good to know that Kim's still kicking it.

And I didn't know that he's a lefty until my sister asked him for an autograph.

  • they got the name from looking in a phone book! awsome.

  • All of the Max Webster and Kim Mitchell material is vastly under appreciated!

  • they didnt make it in england!HAHA!

  • Didn't Max Webster open up for Sabbath for a few shows back in 1980?

  • Kim Mitchell of Max Webster is perhaps one of the most under-rated guitarists of all time. His work with Max is/was obviously superior to his solo stuff - at least in the guitar dept. His guitar solos were very unique, often blistering at times - like a cross between Frank Zappa and Allan Holdsworth, but totally "Max" at the same time. 30 years later I still love Kim Mitchell's playing. I have a rare recording of 3 or 4 songs live in Barrie from a CHUM Simulcast. Very good quality.

  • @michaeljaeger01

I always thought there was a touch of Zappa in Max Webster. Kim Mitchell is truly one of the great, Guitarist/Singer/songwriters and so under rated, as is Gary McCracken who is way underrated as a drummer and made Max Webster's complex songs sound so fluid.

This band should have got way more credit

  • I saw Max support the MIGHTY Rush too, in Manchester, about 1980-ish. They were, and are, awesome.

  • "High Class in Borrowed Shoes!"

"Umm, I think you got the wrong band, I don't think we play that song" hilarious, and awesome video

  • holy crap he rocks like an animal

  • Saw Max Webster support Rush at Stafford, UK around 1978/79 (can't remember) no-one knew what to make of Max and just wanted Rush, but the guys made a good show of it. I've been a fan ever since.

  • That's awesome. Max was the 1st concert I ever saw in here in Canada, waaaay back in 1979, I was barely 15 years old. I have a very good quality recording of 3 or 4 songs live at the Roxy in Barrie, Ontario which is very rare. Do you have any live recordings? I have all their CD's and albums, were you able to locate same in the UK?

  • omg i was there!

  • wat did u say????

  • Canada's secret weapon!!

  • Awesome tune, thanks very much. Kim Mitchell still rules on guitar!!

  • pillsbury was here

  • In the late 70s they had great tours like Rush,ZZ Top, and Max Webster on the same bill, for about 15 bucks

  • Those were great times.

I wish I could bring my kids back in time for a 70s Concert.

One of the best shows I saw was Max Webster / Starcastle / Rush. On the same bill. Great show. All three bands played great.

    PW

  • Oh Yea!

What was that big cloud floating in the middle of the arena. LOL. :-)

  • Saw Webster New Years eve 1980 Mapleleaf Gardens,Geddy Lee came on stage and belted out Battle Scar, what a great show!

  • I was there too. The good old days for sure.

  • just b4 Rush came famous they played Bradford District High School, just north of Toronto, unfortunately I was only about 3 at the time so I never saw them

  • They remind me a bit of the poppier Frank Zappa and sometimes the tubes. Saw them live once and thought they rocked!

  • The incredible, one & only, Max Webster.

One of the best bands (if not 'the' best) to ever come out of Canada. Only ever got a chance to see them in concert once - sigh.

  • Max Webster has never been released on iTunes? Anyone found Max on iTunes?

  • Max Websters, singer, is Kim Mitchel, who also had a band in the 80s by the same name, and is now bald, and working as a DJ for q107, which is a rock radio station in Toronto that broadcasts from the top of the CN tower.

  • Yeah, he's bald. That's important.

    Idiot.

  • From the top of the CN Tower? Umm, no. They broadcast from the Hard Rock Cafe at Dundas Square.

  • Who's the personel here? Doesn't look like the High Class-era band.

  • Not sure, early 80's... I remember seeing Max in Elliot Lake, early 80's. They came out onstage in pyjamas....didn't go over well with the crowd...Max Webster killed though

  • Haha.

  • Yeah, it's the original guys, just a little less "Dolled" up than in the earlier days.

  • That skinny guy is not the bassist on the cover of my Best of Max...

  • Not the original drummer or bass player. Paul Kersey was the original drummer and Mike Tilka was the bass player.

  • Comment removed

  • I thought Tilka came after the High Class album.

  • Rusty - Tilka is on the cover of the High Class Album he is the other follically challenged dude. David Myles joined after Tilka left just before Mutiny Up My Sleeve.

  • So the guy playing in the Jersey with the long hair is Myles?

  • yes

  • Which albums did he play on and how would you compare him and Tilka?

  • He played on Mutiny, Million Vacations & Universal Juveniles. He did a good job but I liked Tilka's playing a little more and think that Tilka had more stage presence.

  • man those songs have some good playing. Myles doesn't seem to do much in the clips he's in. I hope Kim release a Max DVD with a full concert or two and some clips! It'd be worth the "import!"

  • that guy on keyboards does not look at all like terry watkinson......

  • cuz he isnt Watkinson lol

  • It was back in 74 when I immigrate to Canada

and 1975 when I had the opportunity to 'feel' the power of Max Webster at the T.O City Hall

bands stage... Kim Mitchel still remains at the top of my Canadian bands list among Nazareth, Triumph, Sass Jordan and Lee Aaron

  • Nazareth is from Scotland

  • One of the BEST Canadian bands ever!!

    Totally under-appreciated,brilliant!

  • Gary is my drum teacher, rad rad dude.

  • U lucky bastardlol! He's a wicked player.Where does he teach?? what area??

    cheers

    BDP

  • FLASHBACK!! Was at that show at the Roxy in 80. Goddo and Saga came through Barrie that summer as well. Good times, when two kids and a case of Brador fit in the trunk to take to the drive in on a friday night, no less Kim Mitchell fitting into spandex.

  • Brador? You're talkin' my language. As a kid growing up in NY on the Canadian border, we used to make beer runs for Brador! Haven't had one in years, though.

  • One of the most under rated bands, ever!! These guys never got the attention they deserved. I saw them open for Rush a few times and they always blew me away. Kim Mitchell is an amazing guitar player -- one of the best!!

  • I learned this entire song on guitar - damn fun to play!

  • Max Webster had so much talent and sooo many great songs!

The first "alt. rock" band in Canada....ever!

They seemed weird and glam and jazzy.

Something the American music world just couldn't comprehend.

  • shit i always liked this song never know it was max webster

  • yes, tpep, those WERE the days! saw them 5 times, first time at my "high" school, AY Jackson, Toronto, 1974 I guess, with their first drummer, who greeted me in the hallway as i made my way to the john to puke. that was before microbrew, and clean ingredients, eh.

  • Wow,this is so cool,I haven't heard this in years!

  • Those were the days. Thanks for posting

  • I have been searching all over-eBay and old records shops, to find "HangOver"-

This was one of my sons mentors, Martin G-who left the earth 2 years ago-this is my first time seeing or hearing Max Webster,-Thank You

    Jude

    j

  • Are you looking for the 33 or just a recording? You can still buy this on CD. "Max Webster" by Max Webster (oddly enough;)). Hope you find the CD or the record. Great album!

  • a modern day boron shoe mean mean pride

    sounds like letterman

  • These guys were underated... should have had more success, I seen them at Maple Leaf Gardens New Year's Eve 79-80, they rocked and still do... Webster Rules!!!!

  • I was at that concert. It rocked. Best concert I've ever been to. Webtser rules.

  • This is a great song by Max Webster! thanks!

  • I love rockin the Mitchell

  • What a great band.

The first time I saw them, they were opening for RUSH and STARCASTLE at Vetrans Memorial in Columbus, Ohio.

Im like, "Who is this dude bunny hopping around the stage". Anyway, I've been a MAX fan ever since then.

    Killer drummer too IMHO.

  • Starcastle is back together and signed to Progrockrecords. here's the link to their page. I just wish MW would come back. They were outstanding.

  • I remember Starcastle, seen them in Buffalo, they opened for Todd Rundgren/Utopia, awesome sound. Max Webster was a bar band around my home city before they broke big, they played our high school and a cousin of mine was going to play rhythm guitar for them. They backed Rush a lot and Harvey and Corkey's (sp)was a great venue for great bands, way back when. Would love to see MW back together, Cat's in the bag the neighbors holler, this party's........ I sure we all know the rest. Cheers!!

  • Kim Mitchell hasn't played Glasgow since 79...way too long ago!!! :(

  • Cool...with Dave Stone on Keyboards.

  • great band, great songs, very versatile and accomplished.

  • Kim Mitchell's got fairly wacky dress sense. LOL

  • Its not the wacky clothes that get me--its seeing him with all that hair

  • All that hair? It's no wonder he's bald now. Look at that receding hairline! He can't be very old in this video, but that forehead is way too high. Also, look at how thin his hair is. It just happens to be long, that's all. He had absolutely no choice other than to go bald.

  • nice to see how superficial you are

  • has nuthin to do with the tunes

  • Who really cares if he went bald. This guy is a canadian icon in rock n roll.Dont judge people from there looks dumbass!!Q107 rocks!!

  • How about not judging people by their sound then? Or is that somehow different? Q107 is for 45-year-olds who are afraid of facing the present moment.

"Went bald"? As you can clearly see in this video, he's always been balding. You actually let the length fool you?

There's no receding hairline. It's already totally receded, and he's like in his 20's here.

  • I agree, Max is an Icon!!! I've seen him open for Rush at least 15 times, and have never been disappointed. Universal Juveniles...What an album!!!!!

  • this is such a rarity, you must have other video clips from this concert or other max webster videos. please i beg of you to add them as there is no where else to see any and there are only a couple floating around. i truly have a wish to see any live magnetic air concert clips and universal juveniles videos if at all possible, please let me know as you may be our only hope.thanks my friend!

  • Ha Ha, Max played my HIGHSCHOOL in 1975-76? dunno...was Many moons ago!

  • UNBELIEVEABLE!...I first saw Max open for Rush on the Permanent Waves tour in 1980, first I've ever heard of Max, and have been a fan ever since...thanks for the memory...heard they did a reunion tour a couple a years ago,We people here in the States are always missin' out. Great stuff.

  • Everytime I watch and listen I am 15 again!

  • Can you still get "a million vacations". (the movie). If so, where can you get it?

  • makes you proud to be canadian

  • I saw Max Webster open for Rush in Manchester on the Hemispheres tour in 79...cool dudes, even though its that long ago cannot remember much of the gig..

  • I saw Max Webster open for Rush in 1978 in Cornwall, Ontario on the "Farewell to Kings" Tour. Max Webster and Kim Mitchell absolutely blew me away! Glad to see so many Max Webster fans lurking about!!

  • wow iwas there that night

  • Oh! the memoriesss! from '76 thanx so much:)

  • I actually got a free Max Webster LP after I bought another LP (cant remember what) on ebay and the Max Webster album was used as part of the packaging my original item was sent it!! Talk about a bonus.

  • Here among the cats!

  • WOW!! I never thought I would see this again. Thanks

for the clip! Oh Oh, here come the memories.

  • What a super tight band! Takes me back a long way!

  • Geeez...I stil have their tapes, and listen to quite often. Loved "Research at Beach Resorts" off A Million Vacations!!

  • awesome! thanks for posting this gem!

  • Great song, good band. God those tight pants look awful Kim. Ps-how is it u look older in the 1970s than u do now 30 yrs later?

  • iTunes in Canada finally has some Max Webster available for sale. $5.99 per album.

I first caught Max Webster at AY Jackson High Scool, Willowdale back in 1976 or 77 (hazy memories), seen them many times since. I'm still listening to them today!

  • Does anybody some stuff from the group and their album "universal juveniles" have? I looking expecially for "Battle Scar", "April in Toledo", "Check"...

    Would be great...

  • O live in the States now, but I got four words. The Key To Bala. Nothing said summer like Max Webster at the Key.

  • Yes and I saw Kim and the Boys there a few times as well as The Arena in Port Carling. Summer nights long past in Muskoka rock'n to Max Webster we were lucky to have ben there. Good times and good memories....

  • Oh my God, this takes me back. Wow, I didn't think I'd find any Max here either...what a treat. Saw them many times also (good ol' days). I'd love to see "Oh War" here. Been thinking of that one lately. Thanks, this is great.
