You should read the book Stonewall, and there's a documentary based off the book called Stonewall The Uprising. Both of them are really informative and interesting.
Both videos R good. Enjoyed earlier video more. Thank you for pointing out our colorful and awesome history. :-D Three major events took place in North America in about a 2 year period. The gay denomination (MCC) was formed in California, Stonewall riot in New York, and decriminalization of gay sex in Canada. Religious leaders, not just limited to Troy Perry, were very powerful in the gay rights movement, just as they were in the Black rights movement.
I don't have netflix in my country but I'll try to find that documentary :). Discrimination is the manifestation of the prejudice, which is a way of making pressure to (mainly) minorities, and it's really common to see this kind of behaviour in an individualist society; specially the US society. Anyhow, I agree on the fact that educating ourselves and other people is a really good method to stop discrimination. Nice video!! :)
@stefiebabe93 It's a generalization, as in a majority of them do, this doesnt reflect the people of that religion because they are entitled to their own opinions but most religious documents say something along the lines of homosexuality is bad, which usually is classified as sexual perversion because thats what people considered it back then. if your religion is pro gay then im happy and thats awesome but i never hear about them. just religious people who are.
@alegitproduction The Methodist in our doctrine specifically state that we do not judge against sexual orientation now on an individual basis there more than likely are some who are against it but as a church we have stood up and said its okay
@stefiebabe93 trust me im familiar with the methodist church, was an active member of one for 6 years and i have nothing against it or any other religion, but if the bible is the 'word of god' as it is considered in Christianity for example, and the bible says homosexuality is wrong. then in the root of that religion, based on the bible you worship a god that consecrates homosexuality as a sin. i dont believe god thinks that way, but the doctrine does would lead us to believe that
@stefiebabe93 The speaker didn't lump religions as anti-gay. He simply said about "one woman," "she just lead a religious assault against the gay movement." Because that's what she apparently did, on a "religious" basis. It would be nice to know her specific religion, but the comment made, and the facts presented in the video are not anti-religious, and certainly not any more anti-religious than the counter movement is anti-gay.
Thats a big city senario but what was happening in rural America in the 50,s and 60,s was everybit as bad as ever. You stayed in the closet to everyone except those you were having sex with. You were often performing oral sex on straight men and they would keep it quiet because they were affraid that they would be considered gay. In mid 70,s it became much more open in rural areas and a lot of sex took place, but that all stopped with AIDS. Great job >Love Rocky
You're right, we should be taught that in schools. The only thing I've ever come across about homosexuality in history is three sentences in AP US History textbook. My school is pretty good about being accepting. If you say "that's so gay" someone will say something to you to let you know it wasn't cool. We have GSA, we have Day of Silence. Every single person wore purple in October, we had a whole Meeting For Worship about it (google it), we have openly gay teachers. But teaching could add.
FYI!!!! Just read this on cnn.com:
California governor signs bill requiring schools to teach gay history
