There are lots of dislikes because of Victor's tone and in his defence, I think the recording is not high enough quality to get a grasp of his sound. I bet if we were all in the same room as him, it would sound nice. Victor likes to play on the bridge pickup which alone doesn't have enough bass, so he adds some through his pre amp on the bass, amp or both.
Moreover, the elegant and kind soul he is, after the concert Victor Bailey was happily exchanging opinions and chatting with whoever approached him. I will never forget the few words I exchanged with him under the services tend next to the stage.
Thank you for the amazing gig, your unforgettable interplays with Mike and Julius and for honouring so gratefully the memory of the Beloved Jaco.
a couple of days ago a gig has been put on stage unannounced during a jazz festival here in Sardinia . Thanks God a friend of mine was working as a stage tech and urged me to drive to the spot. Victory Bailey, Mike Stern and Julius Pastorius left the audience amazed and enthralled.
I regret the necessary lack of music education to describe in details what it happened over there. But emotions never lie. Victor Bailey enjoyed the gig (tribute to Jaco Pastorius) performing unbelievable iinterplays.
Seems so clear that the recording of the bass is bad.I don't know if they used the mic, direct or what. But the sound is clearly just not recorded well.I'm surprised noone picked up on that.I'm on ocer 1000 records, you know my sound by now,and this ain't it.You miss a lot when you look to "player hate".
Sorry Vic,these lame motherfuckers get me fucking fuming....they don't know their ass from their mouths, yet they come on the web to shit over everything just to be heard.

Surely this is down the the mic? They managed to get a better recording of his voice than the bass!
As for his playing it looks like all his money making commercial gigs have made him lazy and sloppy. Just watching this short clip I refuse to believe this is the same man who filled the space left by Jaco and played such great bass on procession and domino theory
Cant stand this guy. He says his tone is in his fingers, but when he tries to demonstrate different tones it sounds the same. Your tone is in your bass electronics and in your amp. Your style, your dynamics, THAT is in your fingers.
This guy is a bad liar. "This is my first time checking it out!" Then he says, "I generally use two 4x10 cabs with the new paper and aluminum cones that give me that great Hartke sound."
@MatTtackable He might not of been lying. If he's a Hartke user, then that's probably the features he has in the other Hartke amps he uses. You may be right, I'm just pointing this out.
The thing I really like about these Hartke demos is that the players are using EQing and gain structures that actually would be used in a real world situation. So many amp demos have the player using an ultra nasally solo sound with barely enough gain to get any tone with authority. Most of those tones would get lost in the mix out in the real world. The Hartke demos sound great.
vic sounds like he's doing a stand-up parody of product endorsements. he doesn't sound like he really takes this seriously, to me this is almost like watching def comedy jam... i like it!
man if some guy is endorsing an amp that has 3 knobs, he'll say "all I want is 3 knobs" if the amp has 10 knobs, he'll say he needs more tone options... to say an amp sounds beautiful is incredibly subjective. This guy is an incredible bassist and musician. I just hate when people are trying to sell stuff and really don't have anything new to say...
let me ask you guys something..........what is a bassguitars job?? TO FILL THE LOW TONE!!! for you who said "you need to backed the bass" you need to learn more about music :D
I know Victor is a crazy bass player, and I know that Hartke makes great amps, but this clip did nothing for me. Maybe if he backed down on the bass a bit.
@DLI848 What the? No way, man. They're sharp as a tack. This vid isn't too representative of the tone I've heard from most Hartke stacks, though. Weird.
@the0tobes0machine Really? I've never played through one, but I hear a muddy tone from them. The major complaint I hear about them is the muddiness. I'll have to try one out myself. It's a nice looking setup.
@DLI848 My old teacher used to run his Kubicki X-Factor through a GK 700RB-II and one of these, and it was the most penetrating bass tone I've ever heard. Very upfront without being horrible and honky. I dare say if that's what you want, this cab is gonna help facilitate that action.
Victor Bailey is treasure in the world of bass, Hartke is cool but I use EA and GK.

Victor Bailey returned to an EBS endorsement recently. But I heard him play his Hartke equipment on a gig with David Gilmore and Will Calhoun in Krefeld (Germany) and his sound was really great. It was the original Victor Bailey sound which has never been HiFi, but always had a certain roughness to it. I don't know why the sound in this video is that whoompy, but this is only Youtube. @dhriscortez56. Greetings my brother from another mother. LOL!! Just for the record, I only played bass guitar in bands from '75 until '81 where I made a substantial amount of money. They were Friday and Saturday night gigs at local HONYEY tonks while working full time at the carpet mills. I always used a tube bassman 100rms and a '69 Vox guitar. @chriscortez56. I used the tube Silvertone amps in the '60 while in high school. It was the only amp at my disposal at the time, Got out of Army on Aug. 15, '74. In early '75 was offer a job playing bass in a 3 piece band on weekends 10:00pm till 2:30am Friday and Saturday nights. Played a full year then various bands till '81. Now I only play in Church. No offence meant against Hartke. I used to own a 5500-4tens-15 bottom. Fender Jass bass. I use a Jass bass in Church currently, thru Gibson amp

I still have echos of Spain through my windows from next door n across da street on Milagro 4550 main, Right on....On a clear day....a one two........On a clear day... I just listen to a video demonstration of the ampeg ba600. It's sound blows this piece of feces away. I used to have a hartke 5500 head and 4ten cab and15 fender bxr bottom. it sound great years ago. what happen to hartke when a small ampeg blows away this amp.
"what happen to hartke when a small ampeg blows away this amp"
Volume has no correlation with sound quality (just look at Behringer), and you have to take into consideration the EQ settings on both the amp and the bass of the player in question. You can't compare two amps by listening to Youtube videos, because you can't explore all the features to get the sound you like out of either amp. Quite honestly, if you think you can make a judgment on these by watching Youtube videos, you're an idiot.
I've been playing bass guitar for 45 years. Started out on a Sears Silvertone all tube amp In the '60s. I can remember how great that amp sounded compared to this rattling, buzzing piece of SHIT! The best sounding bass amp I ever owned was a '75 Fender tube Bassman 100 watts rms, 4-12 inch Fender cab. You can not get the quality of sound out of a solid state amp that you can an all tube amp whether it's a bass amp or guitar amp. All Behringer amps SUCK! I know my bass equipment.
If all you want is LOUD. The by all means get you a solid state amp. The only good solid state bass amps were the '70s series Peavey amps. Now those Chinese Peavey's SUCK too! If you want anything with quality stay away from anything made in China!!!!!!!!! Peace.
I find it hard to believe you played bass for 45 years when you act like you're 15. Seriously, typing SUCK in all caps like that is something pre-teens do. Grow up for god's sake and learn to critique equipment like a mature adult.
Didn't you even read my comment, jackoff? If you really knew your bass equipment, you'd know there are a lot more factors to take into account when determining amp sounds, including cabinet choices, EQ settings, the EQ and blend settings on the bass guitar, the woods and pickups of the bass guitar, and the height of the pickups.
You can't make a judgment based on a Youtube video, you dumb shit. If you have a chance to get one of these and A/B test it, then maybe you'd have a point.
Also, your computer speakers have a specific color to their sounds which makes judging the sound of anything even harder, unless you have studio monitors with a perfectly flat frequency response (which is impossible because no speakers or monitors has a completely flat response).
Those aluminum speakers Harke uses do SUCK!!! "Something for you to think about."Those who think they know it all, are a real pain in the ass to us that do".
You do realize there are different types of music and the way people like their stuff to sound. Not everyone wants a natural fuzz from a bassman. It depends on how you play and what you play. If you want clear and crispy you stil with hartke, gk, eden. You want rockin and farty fuzz go with fender, swr, ampeg, peavey. Obviously this is a generalization but you should know better if you've been playing as long as you say you have.
Don know what you are trying to do..... it 's more like a personal show off then demo the amp. If you are endorse this amp. I won buy it... it sound sucks...
Yes, you are rigth, my sound is chep, and so weak : ) But i dont want to compare with V.B. : )
I have the album "Victor Bailey - Low Blow", and i really like that sound. One of my favourites. But in this video, that bass sounds so dull to me ...i dont like, and i don't understand why ?
"But in this video, that bass sounds so dull to me ...i dont like, and i don't understand why"
Because Youtube's video/audio compression has a tendency to kick the crap out of sound quality. Do you really expect to hear CD-quality audio out of a compressed-to-shit video file (probably more compressed than MPEG-4 format) streaming on the internet?
I never cared for Hartke, but I did try and I bought the Hydrive cabinet. I use a Markbass amp and I've gotta say it sounds awesome. Again don't like the old cabs but this one rocks.
..your sound is only as good as you !! ...equipment , thou will only ever enhance what comes from you.....a good melody will sound good at any volume..! cheers for the upload...Victor B is da man !
Your sound is only as good as your guitar...especially your pickups. An amplifier only increases and EQ's the sound of your instrument. A great guitar sounds good through anything, yet it doesn't matter how good your amp is if your guitar is shitty. Notice Victor changes his sounds with his fingers, hand position and onboard EQ...not the amp!
Anybody know what mic is that they are micing the amp with?

I know my bass equipment.
lyerlyman 2 years ago
If all you want is LOUD. The by all means get you a solid state amp. The only good solid state bass amps were the '70s series Peavey amps. Now those Chinese Peavey's SUCK too! If you want anything with quality stay away from anything made in China!!!!!!!!! Peace.

I find it hard to believe you played bass for 45 years when you act like you're 15. Seriously, typing SUCK in all caps like that is something pre-teens do. Grow up for god's sake and learn to critique equipment like a mature adult.
Muaguana 2 years ago
Didn't you even read my comment, jackoff? If you really knew your bass equipment, you'd know there are a lot more factors to take into account when determining amp sounds, including cabinet choices, EQ settings, the EQ and blend settings on the bass guitar, the woods and pickups of the bass guitar, and the height of the pickups.
You can't make a judgment based on a Youtube video, you dumb shit. If you have a chance to get one of these and A/B test it, then maybe you'd have a point.
Muaguana 2 years ago
Also, your computer speakers have a specific color to their sounds which makes judging the sound of anything even harder, unless you have studio monitors with a perfectly flat frequency response (which is impossible because no speakers or monitors has a completely flat response).
Muaguana 2 years ago
Those aluminum speakers Harke uses do SUCK!!! "Something for you to think about."Those who think they know it all, are a real pain in the ass to us that do".
lyerlyman 2 years ago
You do realize there are different types of music and the way people like their stuff to sound. Not everyone wants a natural fuzz from a bassman. It depends on how you play and what you play. If you want clear and crispy you stil with hartke, gk, eden. You want rockin and farty fuzz go with fender, swr, ampeg, peavey. Obviously this is a generalization but you should know better if you've been playing as long as you say you have.

Because Youtube's video/audio compression has a tendency to kick the crap out of sound quality. Do you really expect to hear CD-quality audio out of a compressed-to-shit video file (probably more compressed than MPEG-4 format) streaming on the internet?

Oh, i wrote "Steve", sorry : ) I meant i like Victor Bailey!

I never cared for Hartke, but I did try and I bought the Hydrive cabinet. I use a Markbass amp and I've gotta say it sounds awesome. Again don't like the old cabs but this one rocks.

who knows a really jazz fingerstyle-like EQ for a 7 band EQ? Thanks

I like the idea of simpler EQ. Don t have time at a gig to be twirling knobs all night. They only started adding extra EQ to get the prices up. ha

..your sound is only as good as you !! ...equipment , thou will only ever enhance what comes from you.....a good melody will sound good at any volume..! cheers for the upload...Victor B is da man !
GrantSmithBass 3 years ago
Your sound is only as good as your guitar...especially your pickups. An amplifier only increases and EQ's the sound of your instrument. A great guitar sounds good through anything, yet it doesn't matter how good your amp is if your guitar is shitty. Notice Victor changes his sounds with his fingers, hand position and onboard EQ...not the amp!
stonepolismusic 3 years ago
i agree, but no matter how nice your bass is it wont sound good through a shitty amp
cooptroop123 3 years ago
Its actually quite the opposite
Good bass+bad amp= bad sound
great amp+bad bass= good sound
The amp is more than just watts and EQ, its the quality of sound. The bass is just the style of sound.

Wonder how these cabs would sound with a Markbass head?
viperBSG 3 years ago 2
I swear to God--HARTKE bass amps sound just as good as SWR but at half the price.
I admit that I prefer vintage AMPEG but these new HARTKEs are in my opinion the best current bass value.
