I was taught to follow the ball on an arch from goal post to goal post to cover the near post. I know when the ball is on the end line there isn't much chance of getting it to the near post, but if I back up to the center of the goal to be in the starting position you describe, then at some point they can take advantage of my positioning.
I totally get the positioning for corner kicks, that is the way I was taught and what I currently teach. I don't understand how you cover the near post as the play develops and is heading down the sideline.
no problem. As the play develops and is heading down the sideline, you really don't need to adjust much from right ot left. You still want to make sure that you are center of the goal if the ball is out wide towards the touch line. You might, however, adjust your positioning further from the goal or closer to the goal depending on how far away they are. The only time you need to start moving towards the near post is if the play moves in towards the center of the field.
hi, i am losing 3 goals last match becoz of slipping hands, like the one robert green did against USA and H.Gomes against chelesa, is there any video to teach goalkeepers to prevent slipping hands, secondly, will u make a video about choosing goalkeeper gloves??thanks a lot
@schalkefab Tim Flowers told me he used to stand a couple of yards off his line before a corner. Just before it was taken he would step back into the position he wanted to be in.
@Schalkefab yeahh i find that rly hard as well cuz i hav a player at skwl who goes training with me and hes like 6'4" and im only like 5'11". Any tips on getting around him stlouis?
@xXwhat1100Xx Its not a matter of height. Many people worry too much about height. In Goalkeeping, technique and a positive attitude are more important. Plenty of practice is required and you will make some mistakes. Don't be imtimidated by bigger players but instead have them worried by you coming for the ball and taking everything in the way (including your own team mates). Have you ever seen a goalkeeper give away a penalty because he collided with some forwards in getting a ball?
hey. i had a question about punching. I've watched many professionals do the one hand punch and the two hand punch. Im just wondering which one should be done, and if both are acceptable, in what situation should either one b used. Thanks, great vids by the way.
great question. Both are acceptable, it just depends on when to use which one. We just finished filming a video about this exact issue dealing with both the technical aspects as well as when to use which technique. As soon as our new website is done, we will be uploading it. Usually it is best to use both hands to punch if you can because it gives you more surface contact with the ball. The only time you will find yourself needing to use one hand is when there is a large -
of players and you can't get close enough to use both hands. When using one hand, then you want to use the non-punching hand and forearm to clear space for the punching hand and arm. Remember, you should always look to catch as a first option and only decide to punch as a last resort when you feel like you won't be able to catch a ball securely.
it kind of depends on what the coach wants, but if he doesn't have a preference, then I would put someone on each post, but the don't necessarily have to be fullbacks. As for Kasper's starting position, I understand why he does it, but I'm not sure it's the best way to go about dealing with the issue. He is right in wanting to achieve maximum momentum and speed, but starting from inside the goal can be limiting in your range.
great videos they really helped my coach told me the for positioning i should start at near post and the swing out and around like a hockey goalie almost like going along the half circle on the 18 but at goal line to the 6,,,,is that true?
don't start at the near post because you give away too much space at the far post. Start central..as for the movement towards the ball in a half circle...sometimes. It is just going to depend on the trajectory and angle of the ball coming in.
very good video again.I 'm a goalkeeper in a team which has not a goalkeeper coach and i 'm learning tips from your videos. But the best is that you advice goalkeepers with your comments.thank you and please don't stop doing it
thank you and all the best to you as well. We are in the process of filming more videos which will be hosted on our website video library. We will make an announcement here on YouTube when the videos are ready to be viewed.
your right on min 3.30 he catches ball and turns into goal any knock from forward player and he loses balance the ball could easy roll into goal ,he is prob catching ball to square instead of jumping into ball
@ashbagsworld Thank you "dumber" you didn't listen to the video explanation, you don't understand the drill or its point, and you don't you know what the word "facing" means. Well done, you're holding up your half of the duo! Why don't you both go troll some other site and don't waste our time with your uncanny ability to not get it.
try catching a cross from your side without turning your hips and shoulders toward the ball...see how awkward and out of balance it feels. Just try it...and then try it the way you see it in the video and feel the difference in your hips and shoulders.
I have tried and doesn't feel too awkward I find it easier if I'm facing the ball straight away without cos then I can actually catch it, but you missed the point. The point is he is not facing the ball when he lands, he is facing his own goal and I land awkwardly as it makes me back peddle, and is you said in part one you don't want to back peddle.
you're right you don't want to back peddle. that being said, watch the video again, the goalkeeper taking the cross never back peddles...and as far as facing the ball when he lands, his hips and shoulders are absolutely square to the sidelines. I have watched the video again 3 times and I don't ever see his hips and shoulders facing the goal. I'm not sure what you're seeing that makes you think that he could spill a ball into his goal.
Again, lots of good information but I really dont like this idea of rotating in the air to catch. Almost every time he lands he is facing in toward his goal rather than facing the play.
@markusmoo1 Dude, what are you talking about? Everytime he faces in the direction of the momentum of the incoming ball, which is absolutely essential by basic physics! If you take the ball perpendicular to the cross, you are setting yourself up to mishandle it or get clocked by an attacker. He is never facing toward the goal, but in the direction of the incoming cross, at the highest point and cutting off the space at the near post. That's the point!
Hahaha, a blind man is seeing that--you! It seems obvious you have never played at a high level or been coached by someone who has played professionally in Europe, such as this keeper's coach.
Stop being so ignorant and watch the video. I paused the video at one point and he had turned completely away from the camera. I have had other people watch the video, one who is a UEFA Goalkeeping licence holder, and even he said the same as me.
HEY saint louie! i love these videos but for the past 2 games i have had trouble on 1 on 1 and in some cases 3 on 1! any advice? i always stop from coming out because i know they can dribble past me but my defence tell me otherwise?
yes, come out away from your goal and close down the shooting angle. Ideally, you would like to force the forward to try and dribble around you. If you can get into a tight space, then you have a much better chance of being able to strip the ball off of his foot as he goes to push the ball around you. The key is to make sure that you keep your hands very low to the ground around your feet as you get into those tight spaces.
I have a little son. Now he is too small, but in few years i'll try to start coaching him for goalkeeper. With your video help. Thank you one more time.
I have one question.
I'm amateur league player, and i have one big problem. If i'm not mistaking it is called 'subminig" in English. I mean sliding to forwards legs to get the bal. Or slide to rolling ball to cower it from forward. What footwork is correct to pass from fast running to sliding?
Perfect video. All of them are perfect. Watched each of them many times to remember all your words. Many thanks for you. I wish i had a coach like you when i was young boy :) If once i have possibility to visit america for some time... I will shurely join your camp :)
send us an e-mail through our website and I will send you a 2 page diagram on how to set up the wall, how many players to use and where to position yourself in relation to the wall and the ball.

Would you recommend weight training? I work out 4 days a week with wieghts. and 2-3 times a week i do goalkeeper training.
Do you think growing new muscle on my body will have a positive or negative effect on my goalkeeping technique, reflexes, and movement.
thank you in advance
