  • just concentrate on Van.s voice and the genius that he is

  • reggae was influencing everyone at this point it seems

  • Neil young awesome

  • great artists like Van Morrison, Neil Young, Peter Gabriel and others are often very ecclectic and on different wavelengths than most of us, but THAT"S what makes them great!!!!!!

Wish I could reach that wavelength myself!!

  • The trumpet guy rocks

  • Drummer and bass guy blooowww

  • The drummer and the bassist are on damm!!

  • You don't need to smile when you got soul like that!!!

  • I don't trust someone who forgot how to smile.

  • does van ever crack a smile on stage? never mind, it's great anyway!

  • Outstanding! Van's concerts in Montreux are simply amazing...And it stoned me to my soul....

  • Sublime. Good work, @emfoster71 Thanks!

  • He says "jelly roll" most likely referring to jelly roll Morton a musician he listened to, and was probably influenced by, from his fathers record collection.

  • does he say "stoned me just like jelly rolls?"...

  • Cool version!! Where are the kettle drums! Thanks for posting this!!

  • VAN mor the MAN whore!!

  • Wonderful!

  • possibly better than the original...if that's even within the realm of possibility. what a pleasure it'd be to see van do an unplugged album/live performance. my stepdad saw him in the early 70s open for the moody blues in cincinnati and it was just him, a guitar, and a mic on stage....wow

  • George harrison in there?

  • nice reggae feel to one of my fav morrison tracks

  • The tempo is definately faster than the original studio recording but Van loves to mix it up in his live performances. Listen to "Live at the Grand Opera House" you'll hear songs you dont initially recognize because he's so totally changed the tempo and tenor. It's one of his greatest talents. Saw him in Spanish Harlem, NY in 2008, awesome performance. VAN IS THE MAN!

  • 6 people hope it rains all day

  • Comment removed

  • It stoned me to my soul, if only we were always surrounded by people who could lead us there.

  • Van sounds like he rushing thru the song.. but it is one of my favorites

  • I really love this this even more then the studio version! i wish it was on a album!

  • The whole DVD is fucking amazing!

  • fucking amazing.

  • holy shit! who slipped van the man meth or a Tbl. of cocaine in his coffee 4 this performance!?!?

  • This is seriously amazing as hell. Thanks EM. My favorite clip until further notice.

  • I didn't know Jerry Seinfeld played trumpet 0:59

  • To all those wondering what jelly roll means I don't believe it has anything to do with Jelly Roll Morton. It's a sexual reference from old blues songs. The fact that he used the same term in the song "He Ain't Give You None" with an obvious sexual reference makes me fairly certain of this. The line is "Gave you my jelly roll, and he ain't give you none". Then again, maybe that's how Jelly Roll Morten got his name.

  • @jab3785 in reference to this song, he is referring to Jelly roll Morton and how the music stoned him when he first heard him, although it does have other references as well.

  • @jab3785 probably a reference to the classic "I ain't gonna give nobody none of my jelly roll"

  • This live version is twice as fast as the studio version (from the album), which I must admit to preferring (do a search on here for it). Mind you, people will probably prefer whichever one they heard first.

  • Nunegus: thanks much my friend...Van has blown me away since my early 20's. Love the musicians he chooses to play with him and he is underrated as one himself...

  • @seabiscuit152 No problem =P I just turned twenty-three and I've listened to Van Morrison for most of my life thanks to my Dad. It's impossible not to love him. His musicians are always top-notch because he's always top-notch himself. He has a reputation for being an introvert and a curmudgeon in a lot of ways, which is probably why he's had such a close-knit circle of musicians for that last thirty-five years or so. He's an enigma, but I think, in a way, that's what draws people in.

  • You don't have a soul if you don't like Van Morrison, Or your just not musically inclined with horrible taste in music.

  • also - best video, audion i;ve enjoyed on U - Tube !!

  • can anyone list the musicans in one comment ? its driving me crazy paging thru all of the comments thanks !

PS : a great musican himself, Van hires nothing but the best !!

  • @seabiscuit152 John Platania: Guitar / John Allair: Keyboards / Jeff Labes: Keyboards / David Hayes: Bass / Peter Van Hooke: Drums / Dahaud Shaar: Drums / Pee Wee Ellis: Saxophones / Mark Isham: Trumpet

Most of these guys had just finished working on the 'Common One' album with Morrison in France that same year. I'm not exactly sure why two drummers are present, but it works to great effect, and I think at times, one of them switches to just playing additional percussion, but I could be wrong.

  • What style of music would you call this? I dig!

  • @ddevaughnful The thing with Van Morrison is that he really has no genre; this version is nothing like the original that he did ten years prior. He often has a reputation for playing the same song differently each time. He says it's the true nature of Jazz, and I think he's right. Nonetheless, you can hear a myriad of styles in this -- jazz, soul, blues, folk, and even country -- all typical of Van. This version even seems to lend itself to a heavy touch of reggae and calypso as well.

  • is this avan original?

  • From DVD "Live in Montreux", amazing sound and picture quality, turn it up, little bit higher!

  • Mother of God----did Van just do a plate of blow?

Still enjoyable but cannot compare with the album version.

    Take a breath, Van.

  • Wow I really like this version. Swingy, upbeat, and clean.

  • diggin that bassist at 3:16

  • That lead guitarist had real presence, anyone lnow who he is?

  • @DirtyDeck : That's John Platania, who worked with Van earlier in his career.

  • im pretty sure jelly roll is slang for pussy

  • @rwillis3822 you legend!

  • @rwillis3822 It's a reference to the pianist Jelly Roll Morton, one of Morrison's biggest influences. He was a ragtime, jazz, and early blues musician who was prominent from about the beginning of the twentieth century until the 1930's.

  • @NuNegus nah.......i'm pretty sure it means pussy.

  • Van the man!

Check out my cover of into the mystic

  • Van thinks and that's where the problem starts....he has composed brilliant songs but he thinks a whole lot more of himself then any of us could ever do and it makes him an asshole........... believe me I have met him..

  • Love the bass player at 3:18. Rocking it out.

  • i am imagining amy and van singing this together

  • Van The Man

  • The acoustics are phenomenal in this vid!

Better than most stuff that comes out nowadays.

    Thanks

  • * * * * *

  • would it be possible to get a full length version of this show ? Is there a DVD or something ?

  • @aurel99

    AMAZON IT...WORTH A TRY ANYWAY...

  • @aurel99 There is a DVD "Live in Montreux" The whole thing is great.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY VAN MORRISON

  • There's only ONE Van, OUTSTANDING!!!!!

  • @archambault65 Only one and never will be another!!!

  • This guy always had great bands!!! the warm love video is really great! Thats got an even better bass player for sure but yea this guy is really good.

  • Love the reggae deviation

  • very nice video

    thanks for sharing

    hugs

  • dang good version of this song! I like it!!! Thanks Van and the poster of this vid!! :)

  • i love this grumpy old angry rude guy,

    Van is THE MAN

  • for some reason the band here reminds me of the muppets band.

  • @beefy0010 theres only 1 muppet here mate - sorry but i couldnt help myself

  • @ tinkles30 Just for the record, George Ivan Morrison is a protestant, from east belfast. So he would be devoid of catholic guilt.

  • Never heard this great upbeat version before. Thanks for posting. I remember listening to this, the opening track from the superb Moondance album which I bought on vinyl in the early 70's. I instantly loved it, and like all great music it still sounds fresh and valid today. I think Van performs his music, in a way that keeps it interesting for himself as well as his fans.

  • Did the guitar player tour with Skip Taylor a few years back?

  • Gee... Van is so serious here. Like he was playing for his life, or something. Must be that Catholic guilt.

  • Gee... Van is so serious here. Like he was playing for his life, or something/

  • like jelly roll morton? and the other song references fats? perhaps?

  • i heatr the mans voice and i'm happy

  • This sounds like Van on Speed! LOL Its pretty more up tempo from what I am used to. ;-)

  • @pdorn777 That's John Platania. He does a brilliant job.

  • He's playing a 1980 Ibanez GB-10 hollowbody archtop guitar in this vid.

  • Just turned 26.... Van is The Man, and I know a lot of people my age that agree! :D

  • @anxietyevangelist: spot on. He and his father listened to Jelly Roll Morton when he was growing up.

  • @sean3652: right and that's why the song title is "And It Stoned Me". Yikes.

  • pks

  • Extremely Awesome.

  • Van says "and its stormy to my soul" not stoned me, just for reference.

  • @sean3652 no he doesn't silly!

  • I also agree about Van and the poet in him. My favorite is" Into the Mistic" because iv lived in Coo Bay, and i want to go home. Iv also head Van has bad stage fright.

  • I also agree about Van and the poet in him. My favorite is" Into the Mistic" because iv lived in Coo Bay, and i want to go home. iv also head Van

  • Definitely dig me some Van, but this version just seems a little rushed. I know he had a tendency for doing this with some of his live stuff, but just feels like he's rushing through it. Still like it.

  • @dmb5675 agree totally, too quick. still like it

  • Van Morrison is twice as good live

  • 3 people need to get stoned

  • I did not think I could love Van any more that I do, BUT! I watched many live versions today, (courtesy of wonderful people like you!) and now I love him even more!

  • 25-yr old bass player here. Grew up listening to Van Morrison. I was born a generation too late.

  • IS THIS A SONG ABOUT OUR LITTLE MID-EAST FRIENDS?

  • Van The Man!!!

  • why: it stoned me like a JELLY ROLL???

  • @titusverster

jelly roll was the stage name of a highly regarded early jazz pianist & composer Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe. I guess Van was a big fan. Can also be slang for sex but im sure about that

  • @titusverster Jelly Roll Morton. :-D

  • @TubbyMex ... thanks.. I always wondered wtf he was talking about..

  • @titusverster female anatomy.

  • A little fast, but my favorite rendition of this classic!

  • Jimmi Elllis on Selmer MKvi Tenor saxophone. Sooooo GOOOD !!!!!!

  • too fast IMO

  • Is it just me, or are his live versions almost always better? He seems to make them faster and more intense. Is it maybe to do with his stage fright? Seems like that's the case when he was in the Last Waltz

  • OK Van, thanks, it was about time you shared your talent back with the common folk.

Hector from Argentina respects and salutes you sir.

I wrote to you sorely, when the bigtime operators erased you from the tube.

I was pissed, bad words were written, I dont regret it, was my grain of sand to get you back.

  • Hope it dont rain all day. words from a man who knew all about rain. just a shame he never sang with Jaqcues Brel,..

  • Doesn't sound like Reggae. To me, it sounds like he's rushing the song...He can do it. Hes' the owner, but I like the original version better, not sped up.

  • a good song performed...not good ( as in, stick to the motif that made it good in the first palce)

  • @ultrakool I thought the same thing. It doesn't sound bad but its not like the original that everyone loves. I saw him in concert a few years ago and I noticed he did that for most of his songs actually. He sang them well but he didn't really try to fit the speed or the rhythm to the versions that he recorded.

  • @camgan1 yeah, that's too bad, cuz he's such a legend. well, if elvis later in life could play vegas in a jumpsuit, review style, i guess i can cut van some slack. ha. i'm just a sucker for familiar studio renditions, for example, jason bonham's led zeppelin experience comes to mind. he went on the road with clones of his dad's band and sounds like lz to a tee. check them out

  • So great!!!

  • you 2 dislikes shouldnt even listen to music let alone comment on it.Blind ship of foolz...

  • Does anyone know who the trumpetist is...?

  • @TheBizarreCat That would be Mark Isham.

  • @NuNegus thx, he's the man

  • I was introduced to Van at an early age of 7 with Gloria. He has been one of my main influences over the years and inspired me to play rock n roll music. I have been performing in rock bands since 1978. To do tributes to Van is one of the highlights of a gig and the audience really digs the music. Here is to " The musician's musician"....

  • One of the tightest live performances you could see Anywhere! Van Morrison...The King of Blue Eyed Soul..His voice,,,his lyrics and his expressions while singing make Van Morrison one of the true legends of music. You the Man..Van!!

  • yes, a little bit of reggae. Great. Thanks for posting

  • WOW! What a rendition! I recently found out about the original version - my goodness what a beautiful song. This is great too though. Van is just incredible.

  • Get the audio from this song at searchripgrab doht cohm.

  • Allways reminds me of Canada..

  • and great latin jazzy guitar solo!

  • @malcolor

    sorry 8\

  • and great jazzy guitar solo..!!

  • I like this version...know why? Cause it's the version he played :) On a sunny day I like the sun...on a cloudy day I like the clouds :) ...aint really that hard to enjoy this life :)

  • Van is so professional.

  • Beautiful !!!

    (ChicagoMusicSociety)

  • great bass playing here!

  • @FoleyonBass extremely happy bass playing as well. :{D>

  • 3:15....yes!

  • I don't like this hastened version.

  • @TroutMaskReplicaa Yeah. I prefer Jerry Garcia's slower, mellower, 84 minute version. LOL. True, though. This is way too fast, and I love the way Jerry sings it.

  • I had the sunshine in my eyes last night.....I'm playing this thing out Shane..... what a great rendition.... Can't find it on a CD or itunes.....only on the Montreux DVD....

  • That bass player looks more stoned than anyone else

  • My favorite version of this classic. Some say this has a reggae tinge to it; I can definately hear it. Reggae is my favorite genre, but I'm not sure a reggae feel was deliberate for Van. That said, though, it doesn't have to be; he's so into the moment and the music that whatever he creates is unique with an energy and a life all its own.

My Dad says, and I agree, that Van Morrison is one of those great individuals who has some 'poetry from God.' Thanks for posting.

    Respect from Seattle

  • @NuNegus how stoned is Van

  • @NuNegus he is os cool

  • @NuNegus It's deliberate. They're a well-rehearsed band and know exactly what they're doing!

  • @boo66 I know the band is razor-sharp here. I guess it's just my perception based on what I know about Morrison; he's always disliked categorical classification, especially of his own music. I just can't imagine that he looked at the group in rehearsal and said: "Let's make this reggae." What they're playing isn't accidental, but at the same time, if one were to ask Morrison "Was there reggae there?" I doubt he'd attach the label to it; he simply let it flow, and it came out sounding unique.

  • @NuNegus its like country reggae

  • @rudieblah I think that's a fantastic description of it. Country; blues; reggae; and Belfast Soul -- it's a brilliant hyprid.

  • @NuNegus 'poetry from the big bang'

  • @NuNegus RIGHT ON!!

  • @NuNegus It does have a bit of a different beat than what Im used to. A bit faster too.

  • @NuNegus U got that right for sure! Van soothes my soul!

  • @NuNegus Van has the unique talent to do many different versions of songs and make them all sound good. that is the mark of a true blues artist, to take the feeling at the moment and translate it to the song. I do that with several songs, however i feel at the time is the way i present it, i have done stormy monday blues many different ways and with many different styles on the vocals, but it came out as it did cause that's the way i felt at the moment

  • fantastico!

  • indeed! lovely some reggaed version

  • van the man!!

  • Fantastic version...so nice to finally see and hear some Real Van on YT..:-)))))

  • I like this quickened version. But then, I like everything this guy does.

  • sounds like a reggae version

  • Slow down! Whats your hurry Van?

  • @4fitter27

Tis a quick one indeed....one thing I like about VM is how he is ALWAYS altering the arrangemtns.....ballads made into uptempo swing tunes...and fast rockers slowed down to ballad pace.....he is really free and creative, and I blv very much relies on his bands to come up with new stuff......

  • I never knew porno start John Holmes played drums for Van!

  • thanks for the upload, this video is so hard to find
