great artists like Van Morrison, Neil Young, Peter Gabriel and others are often very ecclectic and on different wavelengths than most of us, but THAT"S what makes them great!!!!!!
He says "jelly roll" most likely referring to jelly roll Morton a musician he listened to, and was probably influenced by, from his fathers record collection.
possibly better than the original...if that's even within the realm of possibility. what a pleasure it'd be to see van do an unplugged album/live performance. my stepdad saw him in the early 70s open for the moody blues in cincinnati and it was just him, a guitar, and a mic on stage....wow
The tempo is definately faster than the original studio recording but Van loves to mix it up in his live performances. Listen to "Live at the Grand Opera House" you'll hear songs you dont initially recognize because he's so totally changed the tempo and tenor. It's one of his greatest talents. Saw him in Spanish Harlem, NY in 2008, awesome performance. VAN IS THE MAN!
To all those wondering what jelly roll means I don't believe it has anything to do with Jelly Roll Morton. It's a sexual reference from old blues songs. The fact that he used the same term in the song "He Ain't Give You None" with an obvious sexual reference makes me fairly certain of this. The line is "Gave you my jelly roll, and he ain't give you none". Then again, maybe that's how Jelly Roll Morten got his name.
@jab3785 in reference to this song, he is referring to Jelly roll Morton and how the music stoned him when he first heard him, although it does have other references as well.
This live version is twice as fast as the studio version (from the album), which I must admit to preferring (do a search on here for it). Mind you, people will probably prefer whichever one they heard first.
Nunegus: thanks much my friend...Van has blown me away since my early 20's. Love the musicians he chooses to play with him and he is underrated as one himself...
@seabiscuit152 No problem =P I just turned twenty-three and I've listened to Van Morrison for most of my life thanks to my Dad. It's impossible not to love him. His musicians are always top-notch because he's always top-notch himself. He has a reputation for being an introvert and a curmudgeon in a lot of ways, which is probably why he's had such a close-knit circle of musicians for that last thirty-five years or so. He's an enigma, but I think, in a way, that's what draws people in.
@seabiscuit152 John Platania: Guitar / John Allair: Keyboards / Jeff Labes: Keyboards / David Hayes: Bass / Peter Van Hooke: Drums / Dahaud Shaar: Drums / Pee Wee Ellis: Saxophones / Mark Isham: Trumpet
Most of these guys had just finished working on the 'Common One' album with Morrison in France that same year. I'm not exactly sure why two drummers are present, but it works to great effect, and I think at times, one of them switches to just playing additional percussion, but I could be wrong.
@ddevaughnful The thing with Van Morrison is that he really has no genre; this version is nothing like the original that he did ten years prior. He often has a reputation for playing the same song differently each time. He says it's the true nature of Jazz, and I think he's right. Nonetheless, you can hear a myriad of styles in this -- jazz, soul, blues, folk, and even country -- all typical of Van. This version even seems to lend itself to a heavy touch of reggae and calypso as well.
@rwillis3822 It's a reference to the pianist Jelly Roll Morton, one of Morrison's biggest influences. He was a ragtime, jazz, and early blues musician who was prominent from about the beginning of the twentieth century until the 1930's.
Van thinks and that's where the problem starts....he has composed brilliant songs but he thinks a whole lot more of himself then any of us could ever do and it makes him an asshole........... believe me I have met him..
This guy always had great bands!!! the warm love video is really great! Thats got an even better bass player for sure but yea this guy is really good.
Never heard this great upbeat version before. Thanks for posting. I remember listening to this, the opening track from the superb Moondance album which I bought on vinyl in the early 70's. I instantly loved it, and like all great music it still sounds fresh and valid today. I think Van performs his music, in a way that keeps it interesting for himself as well as his fans.
I also agree about Van and the poet in him. My favorite is" Into the Mistic" because iv lived in Coo Bay, and i want to go home. Iv also head Van has bad stage fright.
Definitely dig me some Van, but this version just seems a little rushed. I know he had a tendency for doing this with some of his live stuff, but just feels like he's rushing through it. Still like it.
I did not think I could love Van any more that I do, BUT! I watched many live versions today, (courtesy of wonderful people like you!) and now I love him even more!
jelly roll was the stage name of a highly regarded early jazz pianist & composer Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe. I guess Van was a big fan. Can also be slang for sex but im sure about that
Is it just me, or are his live versions almost always better? He seems to make them faster and more intense. Is it maybe to do with his stage fright? Seems like that's the case when he was in the Last Waltz
Doesn't sound like Reggae. To me, it sounds like he's rushing the song...He can do it. Hes' the owner, but I like the original version better, not sped up.
@ultrakool I thought the same thing. It doesn't sound bad but its not like the original that everyone loves. I saw him in concert a few years ago and I noticed he did that for most of his songs actually. He sang them well but he didn't really try to fit the speed or the rhythm to the versions that he recorded.
@camgan1 yeah, that's too bad, cuz he's such a legend. well, if elvis later in life could play vegas in a jumpsuit, review style, i guess i can cut van some slack. ha. i'm just a sucker for familiar studio renditions, for example, jason bonham's led zeppelin experience comes to mind. he went on the road with clones of his dad's band and sounds like lz to a tee. check them out
I was introduced to Van at an early age of 7 with Gloria. He has been one of my main influences over the years and inspired me to play rock n roll music. I have been performing in rock bands since 1978. To do tributes to Van is one of the highlights of a gig and the audience really digs the music. Here is to " The musician's musician"....

@TroutMaskReplicaa Yeah. I prefer Jerry Garcia's slower, mellower, 84 minute version. LOL. True, though. This is way too fast, and I love the way Jerry sings it.
I had the sunshine in my eyes last night.....I'm playing this thing out Shane..... what a great rendition.... Can't find it on a CD or itunes.....only on the Montreux DVD....
I was at that very concert (1980 Montreux) - Passport performed the same night before Van Morrison - and then B.B.King with his large band. After his set B.B.King invited Doldinger, Ellis and Isham up for a long wild jam ..... quite a night ! Montreux always takes place in July for about 2 weeks+, the same year I also saw Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Stanley Clarke, and many more.... I went there every year from '80 - '88 until I moved to NYC. Thanks so much for posting this clip!
My favorite version of this classic. Some say this has a reggae tinge to it; I can definately hear it. Reggae is my favorite genre, but I'm not sure a reggae feel was deliberate for Van. That said, though, it doesn't have to be; he's so into the moment and the music that whatever he creates is unique with an energy and a life all its own.
My Dad says, and I agree, that Van Morrison is one of those great individuals who has some 'poetry from God.' Thanks for posting.
@boo66 I know the band is razor-sharp here. I guess it's just my perception based on what I know about Morrison; he's always disliked categorical classification, especially of his own music. I just can't imagine that he looked at the group in rehearsal and said: "Let's make this reggae." What they're playing isn't accidental, but at the same time, if one were to ask Morrison "Was there reggae there?" I doubt he'd attach the label to it; he simply let it flow, and it came out sounding unique.
@NuNegus Van has the unique talent to do many different versions of songs and make them all sound good. that is the mark of a true blues artist, to take the feeling at the moment and translate it to the song. I do that with several songs, however i feel at the time is the way i present it, i have done stormy monday blues many different ways and with many different styles on the vocals, but it came out as it did cause that's the way i felt at the moment
Tis a quick one indeed....one thing I like about VM is how he is ALWAYS altering the arrangemtns.....ballads made into uptempo swing tunes...and fast rockers slowed down to ballad pace.....he is really free and creative, and I blv very much relies on his bands to come up with new stuff......
just concentrate on Van.s voice and the genius that he is

@rudieblah I think that's a fantastic description of it. Country; blues; reggae; and Belfast Soul -- it's a brilliant hyprid.

@4fitter27
