I am a huge fan of some of today's music(Sigur Ros, Radiohead, The National, etc), but, only an idiot doesn't pay homage to the classics, and I LOVE Blind Faith. They're considered obscure, but what an AMAZING group of musicians. Let's just forget 80's Winwood ever happened, deal??
Clapton wasn't happy with his playing, and Winwood's voice cracked all over the place that day. It must have been tough being the band's only singer, but maybe they couldn't hear themselves properly because there were no monitors and the PA system was next to nothing. What a contrast to the kind of staging of today's concerts. Still; the SuperGroup of supergroups!
No Lie!! I'd like to see a GOOD live version of "Do What You Like" I saw one here on Utube, but NO Clapton solo. Any links to better Blind Faith Vids?
Was a huge Traffic and Cream fan..and had just turned 14 when the BF record came out -summer '69 and then, blow my mind..they announced a tour and played at the Waikiki Shell bandstand in Honolulu, my home town. Who cares that they only had 6 songs> They filled in with jams...inserted some old Stones into Do What You Like...and played some Traffic and Cream. ... That summer started with Jimi in May at the Shell and ended with Blind Faith.. and I will never forget it!
Clapton is and always has benn over rated. I know know many people will hate me for speaking the truth but..................It is not to say that he does not have talent, just that many of his contemperaries are as good if not better and much less well known.
@lta6494 That depends on what you're rating and when. In 1964 when the the Bluesbreakers 'Beano' album was released, there weren't many players in Clapton's league. Peter Green, Jeff Beck, Page. Today there must be thousands of technically better players than EC, but is technique all there is? How many of today's "hot" guitarslingers can write decent tunes? @gonzogourmet Maybe not "1964" but Ritchie Blackmore, Toni Iomi, Brian May, Ron Wood, Steve Winwood, Hendrix (he may not count he gets plenty of recognition) Robin Trower?!!!!!!
@lta6494 If one were to take Eric's entire body of work and studied and learned every single guitar composition (note: composition) you would have more than enough tools to start down the road of amazing artistry and musicianship. I think most of my contemporaries find Clapton to be an inspiration. Every era will have artists or technicians who slip by...that ought not discredit those who make it.Technically are there better guitarists? Of course! But as an artist he is an icon.. :) Greg Nagy
@FlintboyG Well put, my real issue is with the question, why do so many people know "slow hand" but have never heard a Robin Trower tune? The answer: RADIO drilled Lela, and bell bottom blues into everyones head for 40 years! Love Steve W. btw, Traffic was a fantastic group.
@lta6494 I understand the feeling for sure. If I had a dime for every time someone said to me "what are YOU doing playing in a joint like this...?" And I must admit while I dig Trower I never latched on completely to the aesthetic. Does that mean he still shouldn't get more respect? Not at all. He's great! I saw Blind Faith, on this, their only tour, at Kennedy Stadium, Bridgeport, Ct. I remember two things-the PA system was awful. But as me and my frends left, we went right by the stage, and saw Ginger's drumkit-the same one he used when he was was with Cream.
@billysiv Because it's distinctive doesn't make it quality at all. Just means right away you know who it is regardless of them being good or not. Over stretching himself is a stretch in itself here, he trying sooooooo hard when he just doesn't have the reach at all. Overall a bad singer in a band of amazing musicians.
No you are so wrong about him being a bad singer. I was at this gig and it wasn't their finest hour as it was their first public outing as a combo. You should really listen to Spencer Davis Group or Traffic to hear what a fantastic voice Steve Winwood really had. Of course you are entitled to your opinion but he has so many fans which prove you wrong on all counts. It is Clapton who is not up to scratch in this appearance.
@trentlaney yea it was anyways fair enough man sorry if i can off sounding like a cunt i was just trying to state facts but whatever man lets just enjoy the music!! :)
Those drums sound so good, long live Ginger Baker, this has got to be when Clapton started going downhill. I remember a show with him and Santana, he was a shell of his old self and got blown away, good to see he's back with authority and at the top of his game.
@shytown51 you could not be anymore wrong baker and clapton were the ones
who had the idea of starting a band together and it came about when baker was driving clapton home from a gig and asked clapton if he would like to join his then unnamed band and clapton immediatley agreed but with the exception that bruce be the bass player!!! so please stop playing favorites....
@TrentLaney Stevie was the catalyst toward getting Ginger for BF, because Ginger's playing was clearly fantastic to Stevie, and Clapton didn't have to be persuaded at all. They had been jamming as a trio prior to Rick Grech joining in. Ginger wanted to play with Eric sans Jack Bruce, since Jack and Ginger had so many problems when they worked together in the Graham Bond Organisation prior to Cream. Ginger never wanted Jack in Cream, but did so to please Eric.
Cream didn't last lost because it pretty much got to the point where members couldn't stand each other anymore. Ginger and Jack didn't like each other since the beggining actually. When Baker heard that Clapton starts a new band, he visited him in Hurtwood (that's the name of Clapton's house where he's been living for over 40 years) and practically invited himself to the band. Clapton wasn't pleased about it, but it was hard at the time to find drummer this class so he let him stay.
@TrentLaney "I had always liked Ginger", explained Eric Clapton. "Ginger had come to see me play with the Bluesbreakers. After the gig he drove me back to London in his Rover. He wanted to start a band, and I had been thinking about it too." Each was impressed with the other's playing abilities, prompting Baker to ask Eric Clapton to join his new, then-unnamed group. Clapton immediately agreed, on the condition that Baker hire Bruce as the group's bassist. Why make things up, Trent?
again, I'm talking about Blind Faith, not Cream. One mistake I made - Ginger visited Steve's house, not Clapton's. Why don't read with understanding, Doug?
and, like zepher said, let's just enjoy the music!! I wish I never wrote a thing in the comments ;)
Not quite true, Ginger said he wanted to start a band and asked Clapton if he would join, Clapton had already been thinking about leaving Mayall and loved Gingers playing, so he accepted, but on one condition, that Jack Bruce was to be the bass player. Jack and Ginger had pre-existing animosity between them from the Graham Bond days (ginger almost attacked him with a knife once), but they agreed to let bygones by bygones for the sake of the band. Clearly that didn't work out too wel
After Cream split up, Jack went solo. Recorded rock, jazz and blues albums. Got addicted to drugs, then rehabilitated... and continued his solo career. Worked with many awesome musicians, including Mitch Mitchell, George Harrison and Frank Zappa.
In 2005 Cream gave few concerts in London and NY. In his autobiography, Clapton says that at the beggining it was exiting but after a while bad memories came back to life and they started arguing again. Cream was just never meant to be.
I saw them live at the Chicago Amphitheater, and they were great. The crowd was so loud during Baker's solo, you couldn't hear anything. The biggest thrill was looking off to the side of the stage and seeing Ginger Baker's drum cases piled up. On the bass drum cases, painted in huge letters, it said "CREAM."
great to see this gig. Didn't know it had been filmed. Another post someone mentioned their favorite song can't find my way home. This is my stranded on a deserted island song. This and/or Keep on Growing from the layla sessions. One forgets how legendary Clapton has always been, until you put on one of those tracks, when he jams along with himself. Even before allman joined the cast. Overdubs of several guitars just leaving one senseless. [or the dope]
@sidropunk Nick Mason is a very good rock drummer. Ginger started out as a jazzer', and became a rock drumming pioneer' He's a master of African drumming,no one's better at polyrhythms,he's an excellent rhythm and groove drummer, very musical, and one of the best percussionists to come out of Britian in the last 50 years
@mloaks I just noticed the plane on his organ too! hahaha! Does anyone know what kind of organ steve is playing? Looks like a combo organ too me. Surprised he wouldn't use a Hammond, I guess that'd be a bear to haul around.
I see Winwood has got that starship model on top of keyboards. If I remember rightly it got the in a load of shit because they had a photo of kid in the nip holding it as a cover for their album.
@MrDiscopunk Her name was Mariora Goschen. She is still about, early 50s i reckon (she was ~12 at the time the B.F. album cover photo was taken). She teaches Shiatsu, meditation, yoga etc. Basically she was bribed to do the shoot--she was offered a pony but got £40 instead. To be sure her parents freaked when they found out about it--reminds me of the story of Rosina Revelle (;-->)
I love how Steve doesn't take stupid risks with those ridiculously high vocals, instead he lets the song work perfectly with what his voice had to offer on the day!
love clapton's playing on this. Kinda simple but real classy. I'm not a real big clapton fan, I only really love 461 Ocean Boulevard which again is just chilled and layed back. love the tele/strat combo guitar, it actually sounds what you think a combination between a strat and a tele would sound like
I didn't know Clapton once played a telecaster. But what I do know that this was the best band he was in. Cream was amazing and all, and so was Derek and the Dominos, but Blind Faith should've made more than that one album.
@SamMoff Eric Clapton also played a Telecaster (a red one) in the Yardbirds. As for Blind Faith, they could have been a great band but Clapton had it about right: "We didn't practise enough, didn't get to know each other enough, and didn't go through enough trial and tribulation before the big time came."
im not too sure, but there might be a tiny gap at the end of Clapton´s guitar neck. I also have a telecaster with a strat neck and i had to use sandpaper to fit it in place and it left just little gap.
..I have a '72 Tele body with a '60 Esquire neck which is considerably thinner than a Tele neck. The guitar plays beautifully and everyone who tries it is impressed..
Great quality video. I note that Clapton *always* looks pissed off in live footage, at least before the 80s/90s. I've never seen him in vintage Cream footage looking anything less than extremely displeased. As a Tele player myself I like to see him playing a Tele - admittedly he was in transition to Strats at the time, but still.
@scarfacedan09 -You're right, I knew that but I forgot. I have a Strat as well as a Tele and the neck is a lot faster on the Strat. Tele necks are chubby. All part of the challenge to the Tele connoisseur, lol
@MemphisBlueAgain Too right, he makes it all look so easy and boy is he enjoying himself. Happier then when he was with Cream, especially towards the end
@xKinseh: Dude watch any film of any concert in London during the year 1969 and lo and behold, that black guy is at every single one! He's seen here at the Blind Faith show, he was at The Stones' show in July and you can also see him when The Jimi Hendrix Experience played Royal Albert Hall earlier that February (I think you can see him during "I Don't Live Today").
This Dvd would be worth getting as a rare record of this short lived band live. I saw them at Baltimore Civic Center the day of the moon landing! I also taped the concert, but the results were horrible, the tape was changing speed. I would have liked to have been closer to the band, or seen them in a smaller venue.

@bobfranciscobob Wow, 21? He looked a lot younger but sounded way older! Kind of like Robert Plant.
Both guys achieved a lot at a young age. Most rock stars don't hit their strides until they're in their late 20s/30s.

wtfk a strat neck on a tele sacreligious

love clapton's playing on this.

SamMoff 1 year ago 2

He hated the tele necks though lol so he added a strat neck
scarfacedan09 2 years ago
@scarfacedan09 -You're right, I knew that but I forgot. I have a Strat as well as a Tele and the neck is a lot faster on the Strat. Tele necks are chubby. All part of the challenge to the Tele connoisseur, lol

@MemphisBlueAgain Too right, he makes it all look so easy and boy is he enjoying himself. Happier then when he was with Cream, especially towards the end

@MemphisBlueAgain Ginger Baker's a fantastic drummer very musical and rhythmic.

@deathpigeon69 Maybe the Leedy Broadway Snare Ginger used early on. I've read it was used as a backup after he got a new kit circa '68.

I think that flailing Black guy was at the Rolling Stones Brian Jones memorial at hyde park as well... wearing the same thing... hmmm >.>
xKinseh 2 years ago
@xKinseh: Dude watch any film of any concert in London during the year 1969 and lo and behold, that black guy is at every single one! He's seen here at the Blind Faith show, he was at The Stones' show in July and you can also see him when The Jimi Hendrix Experience played Royal Albert Hall earlier that February (I think you can see him during "I Don't Live Today").
MattHatter 1 year ago 5
@MattHatter I had no idea he was the guy in the Hendrix vid! And the best part is that he wears the same thing to both this and The Stones' concert!
xKinseh 1 year ago
@xKinseh should put together a compilation video of dancing black guy at some of the best gigs of all time ;)

This Dvd would be worth getting as a rare record of this short lived band live. I saw them at Baltimore Civic Center the day of the moon landing! I also taped the concert, but the results were horrible, the tape was changing speed. I would have liked to have been closer to the band, or seen them in a smaller venue.
