Wow fabulous! As a counter-tenor myself I was beginning to think I was the only counter-tenor that didnt have an annoying hooty sound. He's fabulous, wish I had found this sooner! It's suprising to me to say that I actually prefer him over David Daniels. Especially over Scholl
Personally, I think it's sad that you are showing your prejudice so plainly. Just because something is unfamiliar to you, doesn't mean it's creepy. You don't have to like it, but you would come off better if you were more specific in your commentary. "Creepy" is just one step above "stupid" (barely) in sophistication.
PART 2:historical founded reason for staging it like this, but if you think of the recitativo before the aria "nun wird mein liebster bräutigam" i have deep deep dramaturgical doubts in doing this aria with a counter, even if i think musically it is nice to have such a nice and warm voice like kowalskis.
You must remember that when Bach wrote this women DID NOT sing sacred music in Lutheran churches. The original singer would have either been a male alto (counter tenor) or a boy alto, your "deep dramaturgical doubts" notwithstanding!
PART 1: I really have a big problem in seeing him, but listening to him is so good. his timbre is unique, although its surely a question of taste if one can accept "bereite dich zion" by a counter. a lot of counters do it and perhaps there is a
Kowalski was the first of the modern breed of Daniels-like countertenors with lush vibrato and masculine heft. He will always be one of my favorites. I much prefer this sound to the "churchy" sound of scholl and the like.
A Falsettist... ok, countertenor then... with guts in the voice. This mean good technicque or, at least, good voice support; then, more color of a voice like this kind. And good taste for singing. The best among them.
Jochen Kowalski is one of the greatest countertenors. Hi has unique voice, technique and spirituality. There are a lot of good countertenors, but Jochen is just incomparable. Thanks a lot for video. Do you have by any chance 'Ombra..'?

Thank you jairdan...who is conducting what ensemble?
The musicians perform the accents and forward moving parts with astounding lightness.
Although it sounds easy this is a very difficult piece to play well. Bravo!!!

WolligesHangschaf 2 years ago
cbafgkmrns 2 years ago

Wonderful. i love his voice. most altus(c-t's) don't have such a pure voice like him. and i think he sings better then a lot of female singers. :)

sorry, but he´s a real alto who has just given up to tell it again and again.... so singing ist same technique as all opera-singers do.
and he turned my career aspiration years ago and I became musician to. thank him for all and you Jairdan for posting parts of this concert here!
