I wish I could get coal here in Nebraska. I placed an ad saying that I would come clean out any old coal rooms that were in use around here up until about 40 years ago... I got one lady who responded. The coal was outdoors in a big open bin. Unfortunately - most of the coal was exposed to 40 years of weather. (hail, freezing water, etc...) The coal was at best gravel sized... a handful of larger pieces but that was all. I couldn't even keep it lit. So, I still cut firewood. hehehe
I light mine with paper and fire-lighter on the bottom sticks on top then coal... once the fire is burning i use big and small pieces the coal man brings a mix of massive bits and small ones and all burns very well.

You can burn larger bits, nothing bigger than the size of your fist.

Just bought some bituminous coal. I might have to divide some of the bigger bits, what's the recommended size for an open fireplace?
