4:13 you can see him literally THROW his whole body into it...LOVE this!! I've been playing a version of this song on the streets of Broadway in Nashville TN. Keep spreading the spirit of REAL music GCJ!!!
@JazzLaboratory race has nothing to do with it man, its all about the vocals and the songwriting. Though personally I think his soloing is more derivative of Clapton, Jeff Beck and other late '60s early '70s blues artists. Which is NOT a bad thing at all
@TheJeffers1234 If he was white nobody would be making Jimi comparisons, cuz it just doesn't sound like Jimi. The vocals don't remind me of Jimi, nor the songwriting, nor the guitar playing. Don't get me wrong, I really like this guy, but I was surprised to hear so many Jimi references. And I agree with you that his guitar playing is more Clapton/60s/70s blues guitarists...But honestly, his guitar playing is...OK. Good enough for the music, and that's what counts. But enough with the "Jimi".
I lol'd at the guy up front with the clapton face on a stick XD. but this guy is sick! i saw him in guitar world this month, and i'm so glad i looked him up!
There's nothing Hendrix about this guy. Come on. Are you really that blinded by the color of his skin? Black man + distorted guitar = Hendrix reincarnation? Really? Are you THAT simple?
@fliphkd4293 I never said there was anything wrong with a Jimi reincarnation, did I? No, I didn't. In fact, I think today's music is sorely missing one. And your second sentence is irrelevant.
@Mlow160 The Hendrix comparison is a stretch. I grew up in the 60s/70s. I've heard plenty of Jimi and a ton of guitarrists - psychedelic, blues, jam bands and otherwise. Personally, I hear more Jimi in a live SRV jam than I do in Gary Clark. With that said, I really like Gary Clark Jr.
Ahhh, a reason to live! Be well and thrive, Gary! The riff Doyle did was just the right touch! I want to see you with The Black Keys. What a trip that would be.
@codizzle3000 Well; Gary doesn't seem to to think so. Great Sound, if you ask me! Besides; isn't the drummer in the white shirt Eric Clapton? Maybe he's just sitting in?
@Zemblan1 What guy are you referring to? the guy in the yellow t'shirt?
if you mean him..he is not confused..he knows what he is doing..Have you ever heard of Doyle Bramham II? if you are referring to someone else then i dont know.
@bonhambaker yeah thats doyle bramhall jr I think, hes played with clapton a bunch. A couple of lefty players have theirs strung upside down like that albert king is the only one I can think of off the top of my head
@bonhambaker That guitarist you are talking about is Doyle Bramhall II he is some mean blues player..look him up. he has played with Roger Waters and Eric Clapton.
i dont care who he sounds like i just like the fact that we have a young new talented person playing the blues. blues is fading into obscurity amongst the young (19 is what i am). some of my friends didnt know who eric clapton was. hope he finally gets blues back into the spotlight
@BarCode712, I don't necessarily see it in this video, but he certainly is influenced by Hendrix, and it is very present in his music. Check out his solos (especially the second where they're playing the bassline of Dazed and Confused) in When My Train Pulls In (Live at Bardot Hollywood Three Piece) it's on Gary Clark, Jr.'s page. You might see why people make the comparison.
This just goes to show that mainstream is a bunch of little kids playing around with machines. It takes real instruments to make real music. Play it, my man.
love this guy, think he's great, but i think that if we want to make current day "next generation" hendrix comparisons we should start with eric gales
I love the higher-pitched riff Doyle throws in. It makes the whole thing just pop. Love this version. Bright Lights is a good song without Doyle, but he puts it over the top.
@OneAndOnlyMrWest except the Keys wrote 'Thickfreakness" --- a good song ----.....this guy stole a Jimmy Reed song and 'simpled' it up....turned it into a vamp...
Welcome to the blues, where the entire genres discography is open to appropriation and re-use. It's not 100% stolen but certain parts of the lyrics are I guess. Also, don't think he really simpled it up. Jimmy Reed's blues is about as simple and laid back as it gets back.
