However, if you're talking about the first Europeans to settle on land that would go on to become the United States, that would be the Spanish. They lived in New Spain, which later became Mexico. Then when half of Mexico was taken in the Mexican American War, some of them stayed and became U.S. citizens. Some descendants of those settlers live on in this country even today.
