All Christians need to be careful to discern between sound and false doctrine in the church (including music). Just because a preacher speaks it (or sings it) doesn't mean it is true.
You should always go back to the basics of Christianity - (it is no longer I who lives, but Christ who lives in me - Galatians 2:20).
The validity of Christian music relies on that verse. If Jesus controls your life, He will also control the music you listen to as well (the way you dress is also important).
There's no such thing as "Christian Rock." A Christian is someone who believes in and follows the tenets of Christianity, but a song or a musical genre can't be "Christian."
There is music that is sung as part of a church service, but everything else is just music.
It may be spiritual, or uplifting, or artistic, but it doesn't have to be any of those things, and in and of itself, it isn't Christian.
@aspieforjesus There are plenty of bands that can write lyrics that powerful. You have to realize that people in rock bands are people too, and many have come out of bad situations just like the one John Newton came out of. If you need some examples of such lyrics, hit me up.
Christian Rock is hardly a "hidden message" -it's reaching out and connecting people to God through the culture of Rock. I believe God is the God of all cultures and art forms - Rock included. God is the lord of Christian Rock, not Satan! (see Luke 11 - "a house divided against itself will fall"). And though Christian Rock has its stigmas and issues, I thank Jesus for it because it's a nexus that brings me closer to God and I'm sure for many others as well!

The Crucified is one of my all time favorite bands. So is Cannibal Corpse. I love Living Sacrifice and Slayer. To me it's all about the music. Putting a label on the music as 'christian' or 'satanic' is up to the press. The message in the music is 'positive' with bands like The Crucified, bands like Deicide have a very evil message, but it's up to the individual person to see it for what it is.

Christian Metal and Hardcore blew up in the 90's when I had just gotten saved. It helped me out a lot when my friends deserted me because of it, and I was trying to find a new way of life. I've been inspired to take what I grew up listening to and combining it with my spirituality. That scene honestly paved the way for me. Looking forward to seeing this. Cheers!

For those who feel that rock music cannot be of God: lyrics make a song either Christian or secular. Because a sound may not be pleasing to one's ear doesn't make it evil. That is simply personal preference and tastes surfacing. I have been in christian metal bands and understand how the Lord uses this medium to reach people (especially young people). God said "make a joyful noise unto the Lord". He didn't say it had to be of a certain style. Who are we to say how God will manifest himself?

There is nothing wrong with an acoustic guitar. It is an inanimate object that can be used for good or evil. Most of these "christian" bands are influenced by ungodly wicked music and they charge for their "ministry", which violates scripture and their music should be trashed on that basis alone. I know a little about music as I have played the guitar and drums for many years, and have played in worship bands. There are only two types of music Godly and ungodly. Music is more then lyrics.

Unfortunately, judging from the trailer, this documentary seems to miss the fact that U2 transcends just Christianity. It's their spirituality that connects to millions. Their message and energy celebrate humanity and secularism as much as Bono's Christianity. The "Coexist" sign that U2 have at shows is probably not in line with "Christian" Rock's message. U2, to me, is quite removed from what constitutes "Christian Rock."

I bought tons of Tooth & Nail and Blonde Vinyl music in the 80s, and dreamed of going to Cornerstone of Flevo. That said, Christian rock was great it in its day, but the time for regurgitating hippie music should have been over at least by the 90s. We don't need to wait for secular bands to figure this out and (once again) follow their lead when they create a new musical movement, this is our chance to take the lead and have them follow!!! Same story for hip hop.

All Christians need to be careful to discern between sound and false doctrine in the church (including music). Just because a preacher speaks it (or sings it) doesn't mean it is true.
You should always go back to the basics of Christianity - (it is no longer I who lives, but Christ who lives in me - Galatians 2:20).
The validity of Christian music relies on that verse. If Jesus controls your life, He will also control the music you listen to as well (the way you dress is also important).

There's no such thing as "Christian Rock." A Christian is someone who believes in and follows the tenets of Christianity, but a song or a musical genre can't be "Christian."
There is music that is sung as part of a church service, but everything else is just music.
It may be spiritual, or uplifting, or artistic, but it doesn't have to be any of those things, and in and of itself, it isn't Christian.

Christian Rock is hardly a "hidden message" -it's reaching out and connecting people to God through the culture of Rock. I believe God is the God of all cultures and art forms - Rock included. God is the lord of Christian Rock, not Satan! (see Luke 11 - "a house divided against itself will fall"). And though Christian Rock has its stigmas and issues, I thank Jesus for it because it's a nexus that brings me closer to God and I'm sure for many others as well!

The Crucified is one of my all time favorite bands. So is Cannibal Corpse. I love Living Sacrifice and Slayer. To me it's all about the music. Putting a label on the music as 'christian' or 'satanic' is up to the press. The message in the music is 'positive' with bands like The Crucified, bands like Deicide have a very evil message, but it's up to the individual person to see it for what it is.

Christian Metal and Hardcore blew up in the 90's when I had just gotten saved. It helped me out a lot when my friends deserted me because of it, and I was trying to find a new way of life. I've been inspired to take what I grew up listening to and combining it with my spirituality. That scene honestly paved the way for me. Looking forward to seeing this. Cheers!

For those who feel that rock music cannot be of God: lyrics make a song either Christian or secular. Because a sound may not be pleasing to one's ear doesn't make it evil. That is simply personal preference and tastes surfacing. I have been in christian metal bands and understand how the Lord uses this medium to reach people (especially young people). God said "make a joyful noise unto the Lord". He didn't say it had to be of a certain style. Who are we to say how God will manifest himself?

There is nothing wrong with an acoustic guitar. It is an inanimate object that can be used for good or evil. Most of these "christian" bands are influenced by ungodly wicked music and they charge for their "ministry", which violates scripture and their music should be trashed on that basis alone. I know a little about music as I have played the guitar and drums for many years, and have played in worship bands. There are only two types of music Godly and ungodly. Music is more then lyrics.

@punch2face You said this a month ago so i'm not sure if your research has changed your opinion, but I don't think that Christian rock sets an "atmosphere" of sexual promiscuity at all unless they are singing about it which if they were probably means they aren't a Christian band. What sets rock apart from any other type of music? It's all just sound. The difference is when it is truly being aimed at Jesus. This doesn't depend on the band, it goes even deeper down to a personal level of the fan.

Just work out to rock or something with a fast tempo or watch a movie with epic music (may I suggest "the gladiator" with no lyrics and you'll probably find yourself influenced in some shape or form. Music, the sound itself, has power. Your thoughts?

@punch2face Hello, friend. I see where you are coming from and I do agree. Unfortunately, due to the briefness of youtube comments one has to be more blunt than he/she would like to be. But what I meant by music "is just sound" is that everyone interprets music differently.
And if secular music made rock the symbol of promiscuity, why not use Christian rock to change it back? It seems to me as long as one is worshiping Jesus in Spirit and in Truth, the type of music one uses is irrelevant.

Unfortunately, judging from the trailer, this documentary seems to miss the fact that U2 transcends just Christianity. It's their spirituality that connects to millions. Their message and energy celebrate humanity and secularism as much as Bono's Christianity. The "Coexist" sign that U2 have at shows is probably not in line with "Christian" Rock's message. U2, to me, is quite removed from what constitutes "Christian Rock."
Ditto on U2 being "best band ever," though.

I bought tons of Tooth & Nail and Blonde Vinyl music in the 80s, and dreamed of going to Cornerstone of Flevo. That said, Christian rock was great it in its day, but the time for regurgitating hippie music should have been over at least by the 90s. We don't need to wait for secular bands to figure this out and (once again) follow their lead when they create a new musical movement, this is our chance to take the lead and have them follow!!! Same story for hip hop.
