  • I sound like shit when I do it. Thank you for this lesson though.

I am wondering if there are any rules like never start slipping on the ONE beat or never resolve on the TWO...etc... ?

  • @highintel The biggest thing is rhythm. Having a strong rhythm motif will help. You should come to my Rhythm Phrasing Masterclass on the 28th. See guitarplayback(dot)com for more info...

  • Great concept exercise!

  • Happy birthday, brother! You're such an inspiration!

  • @LydianHarmony Thank you so much!!!

  • Mr. Walliman. Hi. As someone that is setting goals to become a better sight reader and modal player in a jazz / fusion context, how soon should I start thinking about jamming with other musicians in the same style? Should I feel "ready" to jam with experienced players, or just start by going all in with players on my rudimentary level? Thank you.

  • @itowedin I would recommend playing with anyone you can. I don't think you'll ever feel ready though, I sure don't! :-/

  • Oh I thought you meant outside as in outdoors woops oh did I spell meant right coz I'm looking at it like WTF

  • @finners007 Hehe

  • Ive noticed, your most recent vids are the really helpful to me. Thanks, and keep it up! :)

  • @dan95brantner Thanks man!

  • ohhh i thought it was about playing OUTSIDE as in in the nature ;D

  • @TommittajaFIN Hehe! :-D

  • @TommittajaFIN Totally...I was like..."It's raining in Seattle dude..."

  • @itowedin

    haha ;D

not here tho, it was 78.8 degrees yesterday. and i don't remember much... ;D

  • Got some cool ideas about playing outside, but I didn't get that bit about looking at the fretboard all the time to improve visual coherence.

  • @anshumanchaube95 It does two things: Improves finger placement (sounds like you're playing with more purpose which is important when playing out), and helps mental blockage as it helps you get used to playing notes that don't make sense and aren't part of any key...

  • I'm afraid that lesson went over my head. A playing example would of been better.

  • @merseyguy1974 Sorry if this was a bit confusing. The idea is to play a random note, as you play that note let your eyes land on another note. All this needs to be random, not following any patterns.

  • @merseyguy1974 the idea of playing outside isnt really to play a random note, but rather play in a specific rhythm like a drummer would do.

  • Thanks Wallimann! I am finding these lessons great whilst creating my own style very inspirational and helpful. Hope to see more soon :)

  • can you even do this exercise on a bike?

  • @roccckkerrr Oh yeah, for sure! :-D

  • no way, i always do that thing, i was thinkin' im wrong.

Thanks, now i know it's ok.

    Again, awesome info

    Saludos desde México

  • Very cool lesson sir Dave! :D Thanks a lot!

  • @shreddah08 Thanks buddy!

  • @TheGrantCave Thanks!

  • It might be because I'm tired but I think you said, "It needs to come out clean, you want to avoid that." It's at like 2:30 haha maybe I miss understood, I just thought it was a funny but I might not be in my right mind right now :P

  • @Mugzz12 Oh man, you are right!!!! I edited this too fast. :-/

Hopefully the video still makes sense!

  • pleasee moree playyy

  • @ReinRockz I'll make more playing ones. :-D

  • interesting video ... i will remember this. thumbs up

  • @chickenoncheese Thanks!

  • @Wallimann np, BTW are you okay after that biking video lol

  • Great stuff and a great exercise. Only I noticed one thing... You forgot to snip all the spider legs on your tuners :).

Take care! I'm gonna go 'play outside' now... oh wait... it's dark outside... awwww man :).

  • @udsahn Snip the spider webs? I don't understand?

  • @Wallimann The spider legs ;). I.E. what happens when you restring a guitar and don't snip off the rest of the metal string on the tuners with wire cutters and they just sway around in the air (points at the tuner for your first string). You must've broke a string before this video because of your first string :).

  • awesome lesson

  • @Lubial Thanks buddy!

  • great lesson dave, did you oil your ebony fingureboard?

  • @EMG801 It's not ebony it's carbon fiber with a fiberglass epoxy

  • @gtrbmart oh ok yeah, easy to get those two confused sometimes.

  • @EMG801 haha, don't blame you. It does look like some super well oiled super black ebony.

  • @EMG801 I get confused all the time. :-D

  • @EMG801 Thanks man! No, but that fretboard is really shiny.. :-)

  • @EMG801 I thought Parker fretboards were graphite, or some kind of composite material...

  • @mynumberisnt4556169 im not completely sure, ik guitars like washburn use carbon fiber fingure boards but im not sure about parkers.

  • Great lesson and exercise! Will you make a video of you jamming with outside notes in the style of Govan or Howe as an example? ;-)

  • @MyxHarnett Yeah, I'll make more of those. :-)
