If I didn't already have a final assignment to take care of for 3D Concepts, I'd so complete your assignment in a heartbeat. Your one awesome professor!
@MyBroSux24 I'll try to look that up...but it sounds really close. I am starting to think you guys are worlds ahead of me...which is a fantastic thing.
Internet is already familiar with viral YTP-related styles. For example: MysteryGuitarMan. He is pure YTPMVer. The only difference is that he makes lotsa money from his videos and other people don't know that it is actually called YTPMV. Unfortunately, on sites like YouTube, with their ToS it's impossible to get viral, while you using other sources you don't own. YTP was always ment to be a creative outcast, away, from those YouTube Partners.
I agree with omgtsn, and your point about pushing limits.its like watching a video after getting your brain rewired.
As an outsider, it's the insanity of YTP that appeals to me. I find the best YTP is cathartic in a mostly subconscious way, and it doesn't transmit potted analyzable meanings.
There's lots of symbolism for sure, but its very subjective and rapidly evolving.
The best stuff imho doesn't rely on clever references, and is not concerned with trying to showing off its "chops".
Requests such as "Beethoven ala GaGa" are, from what and who I have worked with, do not work in this medium. Pop culture references are not particularly huge with people who create these remixes. Regardless, I enjoy that you're really passionate about getting the word out for this art style.
Once again, you have some good points but I'm getting the feeling that that you're trying to promote YTPMV not poops in general. It is true that YTPMV is way more easy to approach cause of "Hey Spongebob is somehow humming the Pokemon theme, it's funny" but there has been this kind of remixing long before YTPMV and people are going to appreciate without promoting it. It is another thing to make people get YTP, the earrape, stutters and the truly random things.
@RASVAKEITINv23 Of all the criticism I have gotten so far...I think THIS is probably the most important...because its right. I am leaving the original YTP idea completely out in the cold, and I really want more ideas from you guys. I think you guys have enormous potential, but the YTPMV is just more readily packaged.
PLEASE send me some ideas so I can find ways to appeal to you.
@atmaweapon42 I've really tried to come up with some descent ideas to make YTP easier to people to get. Only type of YTP that's appealing to most is that dinner spaghetti crap but it's just some basic remixing that has "YouTube Poop" slapped on it, and it is far away from art. I don't want people to think anything like that when someone mentions YTP.
Well, you can be sure that I'm gonna inform you if I come up with something but I've been drawing a blank with this about a week now...
Is art, or what we classify as art just subjective to the creator and author, or to the audience as well?
I think what you are doing is a great thing, but I am curious as to how others perceive this art form.
To be tacky, I'll finish with a Duchamp quote:
"The creative act is not performed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act."
@ebbtides You guys are responding to this very very well...and I actually like the disagreements. I am inclined to think that art is created both by creator and viewer...but then again I am kind of a hippy.
Like I said, if you have greater ambitions than my dumb little lesson, go where your creative spirit commands you.
Truth be known, I'm a bit of an outsider as well. I don't create any of these poops, I only lend my videos (aka sources) to those with much greater skills than I. I've been listening to Lessig all day though, and I particularily think YTP's exemplify the interaction that our generation is facing with the previous laws on copyright.
Keep up the good work. YTP(mv)'s are watched more than just fellow creatives.
As much as I agree with what you are saying, the YTP community, in my opinion, is still very audio and visually based. Drawing parallels with poetry - a more cognitive art is a tricky line to play on.
I think that you are very right about the post modernist movement however (as I previously mentioned in a past video - Marcel Duchamp's work with the visual aesthetic in the early 20th century). But who are we to say that art needs a message? Is contempt for Beethoven equally valid as to Gaga?
I believe the lack or absence of clear statement is mainly because of inexperience or probably because the community doesn't really want to make a significant statement (not the outspoken ones anyway). This is mostly anarchism at it's best.
You did get it spot on when you recognized the outstanding thing about YTPs; taking an awful source and transforming it into something meaningful.
I highly advise watching the YTP that I showed you. It would be something that you would love but probably never even thought of. The artist takes a bunch of characters from one thing. And remakes in short form, the movie "Back to the Future". It has music, it has a life lesson, and a little comedic points along the way. It's everything you could want.
"Link saves the future" -TheChewanater. It has a life lesson and is possibly one of the greatest YTPs I've ever seen in my life. I highly advise you watch it and decide if that is the route you would want YTP to take.
I wish I was more renown :c I love the idea and I'd love to help out.
In any case, the harsh truth of the remixing community is that most people are aged 12-18. They don't have alot of messages apart from "hey guys I'm bored look at this video I made."
In any case, I may not be the most famous person out there, but I have alot of knowledge about YTPs and their history, and I'd love to have a chat with you.
I just posted a video with lady gaga in it, however, the closest thing to having a message was that other characters were disturbed by her. Also I put in an unsubtle Iliad reference.
The problem is, I don't think many people will be thrilled about making a beethoven, mozart, brams, handel, etc poop. It's just not our nature. You can argue a lot about us "growing up" and evolving, but i personally do not see this happen overnight. All these art forms, ranging from Jugendstil to high and post modernism, had their "statements" as you mentioned. Youtube poop has no statement. TBC
@ThatDutchLad I think that for a long time we won't have such a statement. It's just us. These art forms were all led by 20-30+ students and such, some even older. Most of us are teenagers or have just started their study. It's just us. We do what we want to do, not being forced to do things we don't want to by an outside force. That is what makes ytp what it is. Personally, I do believe that it will be an art form, and want to work to create it, but not with the current stance of the community.
@ThatDutchLad indeed. It's not called youtube "poop" for a reason. In fact, All the very good remixes I see here that are called "youtube poop music video" get comments like "Thsi has gone past poop". YOu see, Poop is different from art or 'normal' remixing because we do not like to use standard music and samples. Were we to make it art, it would simply be generic remixing and will lose it's authentic fun.
@jojotjuh I am hearing you guys, and want you to know I take these concerns very very seriously. I don't want to be someone intruding upon you...far from it and I apologize if I made it look that way.
@atmaweapon42 No problem, I really appreciate your interest in the youtube poop community and am actually interested myself to see what will happen in the future, however I guess we all have different ideas as to how that should happen. I'll continue to follow your videos though, I wonder what the higher-ups have to say about this, I'm just some othe rrandom guy in this community :P
@atmaweapon42 no problem, it is amazing what you are trying do to for our community. I personally believe that youtube poop can grow big, with your help, into a renowned raw art form, however, I only see a few poopers nowadays capable of doing this. And i don't think it's healthy for them to turn into a cultural elite.
@ThatDutchLad also, consider this: around 95% of all youtube poops are pure utter rubbish (just search for youtube poop with the search filter upload date). 4% are alright, less than 1% is the top. If it became known to the general public, there would be massive floods of rubbish. What happened if one day all there would be so many ytp's and poopers that this (/watch?v=DN3ibF3UMEE) would become popular (no offense to the person who made that)?
@ThatDutchLad many good youtube poopers (the average 4% and the good 1%) leave out ytp or ytpmv in their tags or in their description because they are ashamed of this silent majority. We only know that the videos we make are youtube poops because we know and recognize the style and such.
Don't think of it as a request...think of it as an idea. And again, if it is already warn out, what can you do to separate yourself from the pack. There is always a way to do something original.
David, all YTPers don't take requests, they do what they want. People who have requested YTPs have had the same done to them as "Make this video into a YTPMV" kids. Just a warning.
If I didn't already have a final assignment to take care of for 3D Concepts, I'd so complete your assignment in a heartbeat. Your one awesome professor!
