Superb in every way. Matching photos of Louise Brooks with You're the Top was inspired. I gave 5 stars. In my idea of Heaven, we'd all have an opportunity to hang with her. She's the greatest star that wasn't, due to the small mindedness of those who controlled the dominant culture in the US. I'm glad that she was 'found' in her later years. At least she didn't go out thinking she was totally unappreciated. I hope she realizes now, wherever she is, how much she is loved and appreciated.
@howardyearone Perfect! There is no one like her. She had her own amazingly lacquered and iconic look, style, and grace. And some of her movies (especially the European ones) were far more daring than anything being produced by Hollywood, even in it's "pre-Code" days.
what a great pairing --what a stunner was louise brooks --in gorgeous B & W --a-quintessential; industrial age babe ------- as for cole porter heart-rending to listen to this lyrical genius
I love Cole Porter and really love Louise Brooks, but the lyrics sent me to Wiki twice because I wanted to know the meaning of "your the nine(s)" and what makes cellophane the top.
I love this when they sing it "murder under the sun", the Peter Ustinov/Jane Birkin et alli Agatha Christie film... Diana Riggs and Maggie Smith sings it in one scene, it's hilarious. U gotta watch it.
Sounds stupid but i always feel like i belong in the 20s...maybe a past life, maybe too many old silent movies. Film was beautiful as were many of the stars like louise.
Wait, these pictures are from the 20's, but the song is from '34. I know the two decades were a lot a like and some of the 20's culture went well into the 30's...but there were differences.
I don't think the person who made this video was going for historical correllation (sp?) between the song and images. I think the goal is to describe Louise as "the top".
How true, 177Hender. The profound transience of life is never more evident than when viewing silent film--long passed personalities seem so vivid...so alive. Even such a powerful medium as film, can only be a flicker of the past, capturing only hints of the complexities of human experience. Sigh.
A beautiful collage. Louise Brooks will continue to be a muse for many for years to come. She was one of kind, and did things her own way, much to her financial detriment.
Brooks was ageless and timeless in photos!

I think G.W. Pabst was right when he said "There is no Dietrich, there is no Garbo. There is only Louise Brooks."
howardyearone 2 years ago 5
I think Henri Langlois said that.;) either way it is true.;)
moonkaf 2 years ago 2
Thank you. I'm sure you are right. Even as I was writing that, I was remembering that Pabst was a hugh Garbo fan and began to wonder about it myself.

Back then, cellophane was like a miracle substance, compared to wax paper. And so futuristic!

She was gorgeous and decades ahead of her time.

Love the bit when Dianas sings -youre the smile on the Mona Lisa -,and Maggie walks by,giving a goofy, but sweet smile, much to Dianas chagrin.

I was reminded of an episode of "Xena: Warrior Princess" where Lucy Lawless had her hair done in Louise Brooks style. She had a "signature" look.

Don't miss the breathtaking fade-away Louise at 1:42!
Artist Coles Phillips made a career doing fad-away images, often for commerical clients.

You're the purple light of a summer night in Spain.
You're the National Gallery; you're Garbo's salary,
You're cellophane!
It is almost impossible to hear lines like this and not smile.
