The guy who plays Cecile´s future husband, who also played the king in Amadeus, was once jailed or stuff because he was a pedophile - so they say. I remembr that, and it is only like five years ago, if not less. How lucky for the young Fairuza Balk, that she did not share bed with him onsceeen back then. Lord knows what would happen in a REAL life, then.
I saw Dangerous Liaisons first, and I think I'll be hard-pressed to find an adaption that tops it. That said, Colin Firth is an amazing actor and I enjoy every movie he's in. No qualms here.
Interesting to compare casts --Glenn Close is fearsome, Annette Bening venomous. John Malkovich deadly and better cast for the role, but Colin Firth to die for handsome. The little girl is more fit to play the innocent than Uma Thurman. But Meg Tilly is awful, a standout awful. I know both theses casts have international players with various accents, and I know Tilly is Canadian, but where did she come up with a brew-meister Milwaukee accent for a French classic? She ruined the film.
is it just me, or is this version way better that Dangerous Liasons? Its too bad they were released around the same time, and this one is the lesser known one...Annette Bening MAKES this one!
@marenm3 Many think (me included) this is the much better version, however, it was not distributed in US, therefore the market was much smaller - and - you never can be sure who comments - there is a big competition between US and European film industry, so criticism might be pure marketineg strategy (the same with Intimacy - an exceptional movie critized due to marketing and other reasons...)
Having watched this 20 years ago, it did absolutely nothing for me. Thank you for uploading this. I have wanted to see it again but didn't want to purchase it or attempt to find it at the video store. Colin Firth is just so handsome in this and has chemistry with everyone that is female in the movie. :)
Wow, I love this one SO much more than Dangerous Liaison! Isabella de Merteuil and Sebastien de Valmont are less obvious as devious people, and Danceny & Cecille are more age appropriate. I also liked the settings in this film more. Dangerous Liaisons felt like you were under house arrest, LOL. "Valmont" has multiple sets. Better music too.
i just falled in love with colin in this film. He's so young and he has a wonderful smile... Of course he's very good in acting this part, and i think valmont is one of firth's best carachters
i love this movie so much i wish i lived in it. it's so sexy, mysterious, and sinful. i prefer this version and cruel intentions, i didn't like the one with Glen Close.
Jasmin, I don't understand what you say no to. About the title of the novel? Choderlos de Laclos is French, and the real title of the novel is "Les liaisons dangereuses", not 'Dangerous liaisons".
@MellaBaby1 yes, this movie, cruel intentions and the movie dangerous liasons are all based on the old 18th century epistolary novel (the entire book is a series of letters) by choderlos delaclos...
@CraftyWizard23 Man you ve got to know what ure talking about when u say something like that.
first of all this movie was made BEFORE dangerous laisons and more important, the original is a BOOK, by pierre choderlos de Laclos, 18th century, "les liaisons dangereuses"
How seductive can a man be who is wearing a ponytail that's tied by a great big bow?

Costume dramas are so much fun! I hate it when people try to make a "modern adaptation" of a classic!
