Ms. Zschau was unknown to me, but it doesn't mind. She's just a terrible singer. Her singing technique is absolutely defective, her voice ugly, her diction inexistant, no one can understand a word... Besides her, Voigt seems the best soprano in the world, though she's just average.
Voigt was just at the beginning of her ascent and was at the peak of her powers. Marilyn is one of those great dramatic voices that were simply underrated, though she's sung all over the world. I had the pleasure of seing her as Salome in Miami.
How incredibly glorious is Voigt. I saw her do this in the 90s at the Met and remember leaving the house absolutely gobsmacked. Thank you so much for posting.
Stunning hardly begins to describe this performance....it is unbelieveable. Strauss at his best and performed to perfection. Thanks for posting this performance. It is truly remarkable....great musical ensemble and two fabulous voices..and acting better than anything Hollywood has produced in years....Stellavox...how lucky you are to have witnessed this live...I envy you.
Yup, saw it live and I will NEVER forget it. Thanks to whoever for posting it - a truly great memory I can re-live and re-live until the grim reaper demands otherwise.
This is excellent! I have seen in the theater Nilsson, Jones, Behrens, Polaski - and they were all astonishing. Marilyn Zschau is quite fantastic (although with an uncanny resemblance to Barbra Streisand). I don't know if there is music more intense than Elektra.
What a joy to listen to Voigt's youthful voice. How she enters the scene is magnificent. And her "Bruder" (5:35) is incomparable. Zschau's German is really bad but did we ever understand all the words in this duet?
@Jellyboby She is indeed a FANTASTIC actress, but she cannot survive Elektra due to the vocal demand, she is a lyric soprano. Elektra is a full bodied dramatic soprano, maybe even a hochdramatischer would be more appropriate to say. She wouldn't have survived a live performance of Salomé vocally either, although I admit that she is the best ACTING Salomé ever.
I agree! but this is not the voice Voigt has anymore. Still wonderful, but this beautiful bloom is gone.... I guess nothing lasts forever... But she's glorious here.
Excelente Voigt. A los que no entienden a Strauss, Wagner y otros genios que se queden con Aida, Traviata, Tosca que ya se han hecho tan populares que parecen vulgares. La opera no es para todos.
Marilyn has much more voice than is usually acknowledged. Maybe because there is a lack of dignity in her performance? she acts a little like a strung out wombat, not a missbrauchtes Königskind, a little embarrassing. Deborah sounds like the great singer she is and sang like that when i heard her in the role at the met some years ago. as someone else hinted, she doesn't sound like that anymore, a great loss.

Man! How can anybody appreciate this shit. This fucking music is ancient. Music has changed people and I think we need to also. Don't get me wrong In reality I actually like Richard Strauss music. I like Elektra. But I can't help feeling like this music just needs a rest. It is so old and outdated and outplayed . Is there no new composers of today that can match this levell of composing!!!!!!?? It is pitiful that we have to look for greatness.
how many times do we have the opportunity of listening to and seeing Elektra? if one would say that popmusic is overplayed; I'd agree. last time I saw elektra live (and it's something you should see live) is already 8 years ago! but anyway I wouldn't consider someone who is a headbanger a connaisseur of Richard Strauss.
And to think that old Stellavox was there! (In the choir stalls sitting above the tymps, facing the great Andrew Davis.) A truly unforgettable experience. Thanks for posting this by the way.
Anybody can tell me something more about this fantastic video ? How come Miss Zschau is not popular as one of the best Elektras if not the best ? We know so little of her ! Please DATE OF THIS PERFORMANCE.
The first night of each Proms season is usually, I believe, the second Friday in July (the last night is always the second Saturday in September...). This was a first night performance in 1993 so an old calendar will tell you the exact date....
Deborah is amazing!!! Definitely in the top five vocalists singing opera today!!!!!

So beautiful, so good. But unavoidably it looks like an insane version of Streisand and Mrs Bucket (from 'Keeping Up Appearances.' )

Anna Davilla's laugh at her daughter was the MOST chilling I have heard. This performance was CRAZY!

Now, I'm competing with HEADBANGING69 for most thumbs down.
Here is goes:
Hey! What is Sesame Street's Big Bird and Miss Piggy doing here singing Strauss' Elektra?
Fans, bring them thumbs down in!!!

I'm sure that you have better a career in music than them two combined and a body and face that are the envy of everyone who lays their eyes on you.

Way to make me feel absolutely evil for totally laughing my ass off.
It's actually a pretty decent performance, though.

Hey, you think 'Elektra' is overplayed?? What about Carmen, La Traviata, The Magic Flute? THERE'S overplayed.

Is there no new composers that can match this level of composing?
Probably, but do you think that Beethoven, Mozart or Bach, were given their dues in their day? not.
