  • I love how Canadian the Canadian is XD

  • great video .. like every point you made in the video is more than valid.

    thank you

    jo3y

  • Excellent discussion between digital natives and immigrants about web 2.0 tools for instruction and learning. I wonder whether the two really understood each other and if so whether they could collaborate in and outside the classroom for lifelong learning. I got the feeling that they were not really listening to each other.

  • nice video man!

  • YEA

  • great vid mate. I'll look through the others but... everyone doesn't have a voice.. can you speak for them a bit?

  • Do you always wear a hat x'D ?

    No offence ;)

  • This is an awesome lecture dude. Reminds me of being in university doing some speaking in front of a few people but you have done better than me.

  • Wow Myles , Im impressed,This definately makes sense from your perspective. Good Job!

    Hugs

    Marie:)

  • Very provocative and insightful material. Really brought out a lot of ideas which worldwide we can be thinking about together.

I love this stuff. Thanks SO much for putting this out there, and including some great moments from your whole experience there.

  • u do great work man, inspirational, and it makes real world sence :D

  • UK gatherings do not attract the 300+. In answer to 4, it tells me they can't fill seats.

what age group for the educ system? Most universities have email & web messageboard Q and A already for lecturers to contact their students, so what specifically do you have in mind. The video is unclear. Videos are poor for learning -watching is time consuming. At least on a webpage you can search for the word/topic & go straight to it in 3 secs. On video you have to watch the entire vid just to find it

  • With all the issues you erase, you are just throwing problems out there which dont HAVE to exist. Trust me there are many solutions to all those things, and im currently talking with senior bodies of the education system to resolve them =]

  • And they are trying to fill seats? No. lol - where you got this from? The University has invited 200+ delegates from around europe. And one room was the auditorium which is big...jst cause it was a room that could be used, alongside 6 others. =] You very cynical, but thats okay - its my job with my future actions to hopefully show the potential =]

  • I commend your efforts, but heres reality 1)most v-loggers are shite & contentless

    2) Gatherings...how many people turn up? 20-25 max? Poor if you consider Youtube is 2nd most popular site in the world.

    3) Most comments have no content whatsoever. eg crap! great! cool! interesting!

    4) Your conference had 99% empty seats. what does that tell you?

4)Until Youtube has tighter policy on user admissions, cleans up illegal content & ditches reputation for dossing it won't be taken seriously.

  • 1) That's all about perspective - and what portion of vloggers you look at. There are millions out there.

    2) You've obviously not been to the ones I have. Last year I was in NY where 300+ were.

    3) In an education system, there would be more proffesional structure. We are not talking about using YouTube here..but using a similar system for education...

  • ...4) Lol - There were about 50+ people there, but that was because my slot was moved. And I've now been asked to do talks round the country and in canada - do I now ask you "what does that tell you?"

    4) (4 again :p) - I agree to some extent, but Youtube is open for anyone and anything. Like my point 3, this is about using a SIMILAR system for the education system. Not having school accounts on YouTube. but you prob missed that on the video =]

  • All your epics just fly by. Maybe because they're interesting.

  • Interesting. Thus video went by really quickly.

  • vloging in the school system whould be great i think becouse like slide shows and videos i mean alote of students don't take there books home and read them i know i did'nt read them when i got home but if you got everything you needed on paper from vlogs and slideshows and you take a test on it.I bet the students whould do well on there test if they've studied there papers from everything they got if you get what i'm trying to say.

  • You are so inspirational. It's so nice to see someone with such a strong voice.

  • Clips of the full lecture are now in the description box - thanks Andy! =]

  • HeRo==YeaH!

    YoU aRe The MaN.....Blade376

  • I love the way this video was done, it's like a documentary (very interesting).

  • blade376 = hero

  • i saw a baby pigeon =]

  • It's really great that you're presenting this to educators. Having been involved in education here in the US, I know that any new things like your ideas are very difficult to implement here.

  • i tottaly agree.with you

  • Exactly, this was a big issue I spoke of with the people there - To have education be more about using experience in the real world...and not being restricted to just exams etc - would require huge changes. However I've been called into a meeting with som senior members of the system soon to discuss it though - Hopefully if there's enough backup, may be its possible?

  • awesome! wow, i would hav died infront of all those people...you should do a speech at my school when school starts!!

  • If your school wants to organise it, i'm there :p

  • =O really!? oh wow!! thatd be awesome if theyd do it!! wow! ((im kinda freaking out...cause u replyed to me...im like in shock))

  • Myles, thank you for enforcing democracy into the World by giving everyone a voice, your a natural!

I was pleased to hear the views of

Dr Richard Hall. Coincidentally, one of my daughter's teachers only last week suggested that she vlogs to improve her communication skills.

In a few years, vlogging will become expected of prospective students as part if their extra curricular activities (that and the DofE, oh joy!)

I too REALLY like THAT podium. :D

  • Your Vid aint workin....

  • from vlogger to lecturer?

  • Yeah i've been giving lecturers this year to teachers in training, senior staff and students =]

  • Great video Myles & well done. I think your thoughts about the power of vlogging closely mirror mine.

    The future's bright, the future's vlogging :)

  • it isn't a stand, it's a podeum :)

nice vid btw 5 stars :)

  • congrats, nice job

  • Lol, I love ur hat u should make a business selling them The Myles Hats lol

  • hey man, really likin the video. looked like u did a good presentation.

  • Thanks - and it's amazing how everything is a knock on effect in this website. Without your input on this website, I probably wouldn't be doing this now...and the chain reaction continues =] Life is a crazy thing at time. But yes, I think people from all backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles can engage and get something from this. It breaks down social barriers in so many ways =] Thanks Peter.

  • First of all thanks for posting all this footage up here! You could totally tell how youtube has changed you and the way you act. I love that you're showing the world how vlogging and the online community can help out in the real world. You bring up some great points in this video, that youtube should be looking into

  • i think it is web 2.0 and said web two point zero

  • congrats on giving the lecture and i like the insights. Brava

  • hey myles great job

    it's wonderful how much

    care about education and

    being so strong about

    your passion is an insperation

    to many people please

keep it up i know you will

and have a good time doing it :]

    xxxo

  • Great stuff Myles - we need more people like you bringing together technology and education in our universities - plus it has that much more impact when it's a student experience - bottom up, not top down, it's what online community should be all about.

  • thanks for the video, letting us see what you got up to. looks like you did a gr8 job

  • Really interesting video.

    Enjoyed it alot.

  • Ahh that was amazing !!

    Ekkkk

    :D:D:D:D:D

    Wow, well done Myles!

    xxx

  • LMAO!! didn't plan it!

You seemed to have speeched really well!

Even though you didn't plan, it looked like it xD

    Nice one :)

    C ya myles

  • You know me...i'm good at just chatting for ages...lol

  • You know, this is revolutional, it really is. Made me think.

  • Real nice :)

Oh the footage of you speaking was you rehearsing right? Lol the chairs in front of the cam was empty :P

  • I'm a prospective teacher and i've got to say, i'm really excited about this new outlook on education. Here's to the future! :)

  • hey miles, has anyone ever told you

    you have a hot voice?

  • Only americans... =]

  • Ooer Demontfort i was gonna go there, but then decided not too... lol

Seems like you're getting on well Myles :)

  • Myles, hopefully you may just made a difference to the next generation of Education and perhaps even mine. Give or take a few years, there maybe Vloging on the timetable.

  • Cant find any words.. that was .. touching :(.

  • Great video Myles, I've seen all of your videos and it's been great to see a progression in confidence. You should be very proud of yourself :)

  • Sweet dude. You seem to be gettin' around there. First the news...then speeches at Universities.

  • wow, myles, doesn't time fly! <3

that was very, very inspirational! you've really taught us ALL something indeed! and i thank you for that! :)

  • Nice. =] Great video.

  • beautiful. They should at least fork over some money to see if online video technology works in some test schools. To say no to that would be saying no to progress. A deep thanks miles for your effort

  • that was really good, your changing the world for a good cause, you should be proud!

  • Awesome man, seriously. YOu must be so proud of yourself

    Your awesome :) xxx

  • thank you for posting your videos. that was very interesting!

  • respect, dude! such a big dif seeing you this way or seeing you on stickam showing off sponge bob. i love how you did such a great lecture without preparing! i remember once writing an essay on anthropology of media relating to whether the internet can be used for democracy. it was focusing more on asia tho and all those censorship issues so the future looked kind of bleak. if i ever do posts vids you're getting all the credit for it!

  • Haha thanks...but please remember, Sponge Bob is amazing..and that must not be forgotten =]

  • lol i don't know about that. i grew up wanting to marry one of the ninja turtles. i sort of escaped the whole sponge bob thing. he looks more like cheese, which i'd rather eat than watch. :P

  • wow that was interesting what you can do can lead so many people into actually helping themselves and others its an inspiring video keep it up

  • This was on in Australia and I missed it? =[

    Great video btw. =D

  • It was broadcasted to Queensland University, where a similar conference was held =]

  • Ahh. Ok. =]

  • i cant believe i just watched a 15 min video...

it was worth it though =]

  • i know everyone is saying it but awesome video and it really great ur getting the word out there to the people irl how this site and others can really let express themselves and have it be an ice breaker if u will to getting to know a person. the internet is such a great thing for everyone in terms of learning!

  • Awesome video.

  • you have grown so much.

keep doing what you are doing and keep inspiring others to do the same.

  • After my upcoming birthday, I wanna buy a web cam so I can vlog. Quite honestly if I tried to vlog now. I would get shunned. :)

  • A great man...

  • That was amazing Myles. I love your ideas and I think you're gonna make a big difference.

  • boy, you sounded so great, so professional and so mature. great job :]

  • I've only been blogging for a couple of months now, but I feel like I have more self confidence. Although I get many good and constructive comments, I still get hate. When I get the hate, it doesn't bother me. Myles, you are one of the reasons why I started to blog and I wish you the best.

  • so um. what happened to us hanging out dude? lol!

  • Great video Myles, and I agree completely with everything. Though I'ven't uploaded any videos yet (I have full intention to), I know the benefits and what it's like to have grown with online communities since a young age.

I particularly liked the view expressed by the second man, about how online sites are entities and not version; that they're iterative.

I do, however, always contest the notion of "online community", because I do just see it as "community" and which more poeple did.

  • In relation to your third point - I do think "community" is "community"...yes. However I think it's important to express that "community" only truly exists online...if those in the "online community"...participate and bring it into the real world? Hope that makes sense...it's beena long day for me. =] sleepy time - work in 5hrs :(

  • It's interesting that society's obsessed with the dichotomy of "online" and "offline". I see it like an extension on community, like, we don't bother to distinguish between "school community" and "work community", which also truly exist in their own worlds. But we also freely accept they are part of the "real world".

But yeah, you do make sense. Ha, hope you have a good sleep :P

  • Very well made Myles! :D

  • Wow mils that was great, inspirational, and just all around amazing. You really do have a great stage present like other people said. It was also really cool to see the transition of your early skeptical, shyer self to the outgoing, comofortable, self aware person that you are now.

  • Myles, have you seen Mwesch' video "A vision of students today"? Because your video is like an answer to the question posed in that video.

It starts with saying that the classroom today is much like it was in the 19th century, then shows some numbers that speak for themselves, explaining how much people already use technology and that technology can save us. And it ends with people saying they bring their laptop to class, but don't use it for school work.

  • Please watch that video if you haven't already. Although I'm sure you get asked to watch videos often enough ;)

Its not from me, nor am I sponsored by the guy :P

  • Interesting, if you got mail me a link i'll be sure to check it. Don't send it as a video-send...because that'll just get put into my video-inbox of like 50,000...and i won't find it haha =] Sounds interesting.

  • Well Done Dude

    ^_^

  • wow amazing. You have great stage presence... although your uh's remind me of an old teacher =P but other then that great! More guts than i would ever have even if there was one person there that stage would scare me its so huge.

  • Hey Myles! Great video! Love a lot of the views and the context. Will there be any YouTube gatherings in London?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hey Myles...

I'm a homeschooling mom of two girls, ages 16 & 11. I truly think that what you are doing is incredible. I am seriously considering making Vlogging part of our curriculum & that is in large part thanks to you.

You are a very well spoken young man & I wish you all the best!

  • Great vid

You forgot to put the link in your description though :(

    -Simon

  • Yeah this video was put to UPLOAD at 12pm today..i had to leave for a gig at 3pm. My bro told me it uploaded at 10pm...10 hours to upload! haha. i've just put the description up now!

  • whats the difference between college and university?

"forcing democracy into the world by giving everyone a voice which is such a good thing"

as long as its their choice to use their voice america has been pretty bad lately with "forcing democracy" but i know what you meant

  • I think their college is upper levels of HS and Uni is what we call college. I'm not entirely sure of that though.

  • That was really good. :-) It was cool to see how it went.

  • Myles, you would be an awesome reporter, judging by this video!

  • Cool :)

  • It's unbelievable how far and how confident you have become Myles. You are brilliant with words and how you can speak out without showing any nerves. I wish I had what you have.

Best of luck to you with everything :)

  • Very interesting. Great job Myles! Thanks for sharing this.

  • Feature this..

  • Tell the editors then =] haha but i doubt they will for many reasons. I am just greatful those like you who have stuck watching me over the days/months/years can now see how much you've helped me =]

  • Myles; this is a tech leap forward over what we did. I was 13, studying Evangeline (Longfellow)

and the great thing was the teacher had us make books. Draw pictures, write our take of the poem, and I've not forgotten the overall story of how the British removed the French Acadians from Nova Scotia to Louisiana. Youtube is now the "binding" of the images and discussion which will help students learn. Better than text books, cram, then exam by choosing 1 of 4 answers. Nice presentation!

  • Yeah, the belief I said of vlogging being the puriest form of creativity kinda links in with that..because where can you go beyond videos in terms of presenting ideas in a more solid form? Yes reading is good..but what i'm saying is that it can be incorporated into a vlog =]

  • It's topics like these that make net neutrality so important. Great video Myles!

  • Net neutrality? Sorry i'm ignorent - please explain =]

  • It's mainly something that's an issue in the States, but may effect the rest of the world as well.. The quick and dirty is the major organizations in North America are trying to make the internet work more like TV does. So you would subscribe to certain Websites, instead of just to the "internet". It'll be extremely crappy if something like this happens, because Free Speach will disapear completely... There is a lot to it, if you're interested at all, Google 'Net Neutrality'.

  • Ah i've heard of this somewhere before - there was an article believing in 2012, it's that sorta scheme which will destroy the internet, when corporate greed sets in....

I'll check it out - i love the irony that you can "google" 'net neutrality' =]

  • MMmmmh...I hardly get any views. I dunno what to do.

I found your vlogs after I started doing my own a few weeks ago...but I think youve inspired me to make them better :D.

  • Hey - as I said in the video...my first video got 20views in like 24hrs... by doing video responses you open yourself out to more people. You network across websites etc - and find the niche's in which people would enjoy your videos =] Then it'll fall into place.

  • I think this is a great thing you're doing Myles. You're an awesome person and they way you put yourself out there and how you've really stepped up to be a part of this educational expontent about online community is inspiring. I'm still yet to post my first vlog, but I'm building confidence by watching yours and others that have succeeded here on YouTube. Thank you.

  • This video is so powerfull Myles, great video!!!

  • i love this video i watched the hole thing i think hiles is the brains of youtube

  • Rofl, you are fabulous, Myles.

  • Great Job! It is amazing how far you have come!!!

  • Myles Dyer my HERO - Emily!

  • its really cool that you did that dude.

its good that you share your views and opinions

if no one did that the world and technology wouldn't grow,

as much as some people would argue that it wouldn't get worse

at the same token it wouldn't get better either

people like you are important to the community and the planet

because without people like you nothing would change.

    =)

  • Great to see you putting yourself out there and showing people another side of the internet!! xXx

  • Look at you on stage, all important!

Well done for being able to have that oppurtunity. I love your views on vlogging in the education system, genius idea.

  • well done

  • nice one mate, really interesting. I know I wish I'd discovered this thing earlier in my life. It can be a great way to move forward in so many areas of life.

  • I guess I feel the same, cause there's always ways of getting earlier in on stuff...however, we are still a part of this new generation wave that's going to really shape the future...

  • i love.. your blazer..

  • TWOHUNDREDANDSEVENTEINTH!

  • wow. people who think the idea of comments is to be first, are really sad. this video is really inspirational myles. =)

  • kool!!!!

  • OMG I'M LIKE A NEAR FIRST COMMENTER YAY.

    Sarcasm.

  • epic fail
