always liked this one..... until i heard the joe walsh live version on YOU CAN'T ARGUE WITH A SICK MIND. holy crap! but this version is still great. love the bass line
Every era of music has had its hits and misses. I agree that the stuff that is out today is mostly crap. There is still some good stuff out there. I have an affinity for classic rock that wont go away. My dad raised me on this stuff along with the Moody Blues, Marshall Tucker, Alabama, Led Zepp, Canned Heat. There was always some good 60's and 70's on the turntable growing up. All the greatest we had it. in my teens it turned into Metal. Rock, Metal and Blues for me now.
@Yipeokia1- Since the tech age hit us, creativity for Rock has diminished into legends..Now I have to endure the angst in Rap, hip hop, and all the other CRAP that's now known as "Music"
In the summer of '71, I was 20 and, I drove around Great Britain in a racing green Triumph convertible TR-6 with two friends, and we followed the James Gang on their summer tour - what a BLAST!!! Joe Walsh - what a killer style - so distinctive.
I LOVED The James Gang. Brings back so many memories in a time I thought that I would live forever, life would always rock and didn't realize that time changes everything. Love all of Joe Walsh music!!
And I'm talking about today stuff, not the class of music Joe Walsh plays!!!!!!!!!! This guy has forgot more about music, than today's "artist" will ever know.
Where , oh where are the new kids who can play like this ? Or am I relegated to an endless trail of tribute bands for the rest of my life ? Tell your asshole son to drop the goddamn X- box controller, pick up a guitar, listen to this song, and go make some rock and roll music ! : )
@yipeokia1 hey man i can play like this i play everything from james gang to black sabbath altho most of the stuff i write is more like hendrix but still
@signeseeker17 - I weaned my kids on Beatles albums when they were in diapers, and took them to Floyd laser shown , and " Rain " and they " got it ". They can see the difference in creativity like a bell.
@yipeokia1 Though i do understand the point you're making, you really need to search a little more if you think there is no good/creative artists out there today.
@yipeokia1 we're working on it man. we just have to deal with the bullshit white-collars at the labels that are putting out the crap they're callin music today.
I remember listening to some of the James Gang's songs on radio (AM, as FM was not around in early 70's). But when FM radio took off in about 1974 in Kansas City, it really helped bands like this, and played album rock (yep, full albums sometimes). AM in mid to late 73 began becoming disco radio and, thankfully, more FM station and AM/FM radios came into being, even in cars. 8-tracks of this were great, driving down the road jamming with them. GREAT!
@djepsonatmastnet hi had a 74 aqua monte carlo with the trusty 8- track player. till cassette decks were around or i got one of em. lol had ted nugent cat scratch too alot of yes floyd kansas and rush . good times some fresh hash and a book were all i needed to get fuzzy with and a stereo!!
@jrogers4072 It seems like forty minutes ago, doesn't it ? God, what times we had. I had a red Super Beetle with a 4-channel, 8-track stereo system in my bug. Sounded like head phones on wheels, lol.
@daddybug101 I had a 67 Volks Beetle..Got license and car at 15 in 1972...only one in my crewe who had the forsight to put a car cassette deck in my ride...I had started buying LPs in 1970...I had 55 home recorded tapes off of my home cassetted deck that were recorded from the LPs...This LP was on of the first 55 and I played this sucker constantly ...I had a custom A/C built and the Beetle rode cool in summer in the LA. heat...I loved that ride and It would be a collector's dream with A/C....
@1stSaintsFan I'm 16, got a beetle too, 65 (named Betty). But I live in Sweden, so I have to wait for my lisence 'til 18. Haven't got any stereo in the car yet, but my dream is to drive around, listen to this great song!
@littlegelland ...You enjoy that Beettle my Swedish Friend...One little tip, if you get into a pinch the little bug will float across a slow moving creek or a drawn down Bayou..About 10 minutes top...Loved that car and the cheap gas of the 70s in the USA..."Laissez les bons temps rouler" Cajun Out!!!
takes me back to my long hair blue jeans and tie dyed t shirts i was 16 years old and i just knew the whole country was going to start loving one another and sadly at 56 gone are my youth my long hair and pretty much my dreams of a country loving each other i don't understand it is much easier to love than to hate
I'm 60, hair more than half way down my back (What's left) and always wear blue jeans...James Gang was a large part of the music we played in those first bands, and if for nothing else, I still love it...
@glk001 I'm curious..many years ago I saw a movie and the James Gang opened the back of a truck and speakers were nailed to the doors and they played something..any body have a clue?
I thought this was Squires, so many old classics by groups that only had one or two major hits & were forgotten. I'm playing name that group as each song plays from the CD, and I failed on this & the last 2 I shared just now.
They used to play this on the juke box in my high school cafeteria when I was a sophomore in '71. And Joe Walsh would go on to do so much better with the Eagles later in the decade. It was a great decade in which to grow up!

man, the suggestions that came up on the right are all up my alley too: The Animals, BTO, Todd Rundgren, Mountain !!, Blue Oyster Cult. What, did they look at my album collection?
@DevoDevoT That's cool man. I think it's great that one of my videos has real music in the suggestions unlike some videos that don't and have the crappy mainstream music of today.
@nutbagbrew102 It's not a bad thing really...I think that more kids my age should understand what I mean when I stand outside their houses with beer bottles and scream: "WARRRRRIOOOORRRRSSS!!!!! COME OUT TO PLAAAAAAYYYYYYYEEEEEEEAYY!"
@nutbagbrew102 Hollywood wants to remake everything, it's easier than expending the effort to do an original creation. The Warriors was a very cool movie, I'd have to watch it again to see if I would still appreciate it as much as I did when it was new.
@DevoDevoT Did ya know he hung out with The Who? Joe gave him an old Gretsch semihollow body, and Pete used it on some of the backing tracks on "Who's Next" and "Odds and Sods"? Also Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi of Mountain. Listen to the remastered "Who's Next", Leslie is on "Baby Don't You Do It" and one other track I can't think of, but he is playing slide on it.
There is so much about this group, and Joe Walsh...
The most... well you can hear at the guitar solo section that he seems to effortlessly pop in and out of Phase... interesting because in just about 3 months after this album, the guitar that Walsh plays ends up in a "JAMES GANG" all right... THE JIMMY PAGE BRAIN... another sort of James Gang...
Joe and he swapped up guitars because Jimmy needed the effect that the Sunburst had and have it easy to move between... Whole lotta love anyone?
I remember my older brother getting stoned in his room along with his friends to this song blaring back in the day.. They tucked a cloth under the door jam to stop the dope smell....yeah...like that worked!
djfisher, thanks for the Steppenwolf reference but its worth looking into how the term "heavy metal" came from Navy people (US and UK alike) , many 1960s rockers of course had connections with these, the Navy were talking about really big bits of metal fired from naval guns, you can find the phrase heavy metal in navy stuff from and about at least the late 1700s on.
And BTW not that he would take the "heavy metai" label but search Deniz Tek for the genuine article. F4 pilot, guitar hero.
JAMES GANG CAN REALLY GROOVE, ESPECIALLY FOR A TRIO!! THESE ALBUMS ROCK SO MUCH YOU CAN LISTEN TO THEM OVER AND OVER AND NOT TIRE OF THEM THEY DEFY GENERATIONS THEY SOUND AS GOOD TODAY AS THEY DID THEN
Actually the term "heavy Metal" was penned by John Kay from Steppenwolf if you listen to the lyrics of "Born to be Wild" and it refered to the sound of a Harley Davidson motorcycle at the time.
@djfisher3 - Correction my friend: The expression "heavy metal" first appears in print in William Burroughs' 1962 novel The Soft Machine. Burroughs is also responsible for the terms Soft Machine (human body) and Steely Dan (dildo). John Kay of Steppenwolf lifted the term from Burroughs -- but, I will give Kay credit for using the term first in music. Also, the group "The Doors" comes from Aldous Huxley's novel "The Doors of Perception." Those hippies read too damn much.
@whokeithmoon - Very eloquent. Always glad to hear from you. I will go get a life if you will go get an English education. Really? Is that the best you can do when you attempt to tell someone off?
@lastrada52 Well before i dump my 186 IQ on you, ill make it simple so that you and the rest of the room can understand...I noticed you were going up your own asshole and i really didnt want to follow you and im sure the rest of these nice folks didnt want to either!!!
@whokeithmoon - 186 IQ and you use words like "dump?" and start sentences with "ill" for I'll. I don't have to say anything more whokeithmoon "the rest of the room and the rest of the folks" (as you phrased it) now have a pretty clear picture of what you are without me saying much at all. And yes, thanks -- don't follow me. I don't want anyone following me up my own asshole who uses dead rock drummer's names for an ID. 186 IQ and that's the best ID you can come up with?
@lastrada52 well you must lead a very intresting life is all you can do is check spelling...wow you are lame..i feel sorry for you...speller checker guy, wow something to be proud of and your realitives can always say, yes he was the best spell checker i ever know, what a contrubution to society,....make sure i spelt that righ?? why did i waste my time with you..very lame sonny...
@whokeithmoon - Once again you prove to everyone who can READ on YouTube that you can't spell, you can't write and you can't speak. No pal, I feel sorry for you because you can't even disagree, debate or argue with anyone sensibly -- because, most people who can do those things with a degree of opinion -- wouldn't waste their time with yours. By the way, when you asked yourself "why did I waste my time with you..." you did -- because you can't tell time.
As a kid, the first rock power chords I remember hearing were those of Joe Walsh on this song and Funk 49 . . . still awesome . . . . three guys and all that sound -
@litenslick1 Funk 49 was a big hit probably even bigger than this song. I've uploaded that one too. Unfortunately they didn't have a lot of radio hits like they should have but they do have really great songs. Like The Bomber, and so on.
@Egista07 The reason why there wasn't any radio hits is this music wasn't commercial, like Donny Osmond was. They called it "Underground" or "Album Music" back in those days...Great Stuff, Walsh is in top form. Thanks for posting!
@litenslick1 dood, check out tend my garden from the Rides Again album. It did not get much radio play and might be the best song on the album.............
Walsh proved himself as a great rock guitarist starting at 2:42 of this song, "Walk Away" is a good rock song but if Walsh would have extended the ending longer it could have become rock classic
It seems to me that the new guys " dropped the ball " when it came to the hand off of rock and roll- All it took was a little disco- sugar hill gang- new wave , and alternative- and presto- new guys dressed like bronzed chipmunks, can't play a lick chasing tail at the dance club. I mean go for it, but where is the beauty, soul , and character of rock and roll ? There are many in the world who are waiting for the next Joe Walsh to have his uncle show him this video and inspire him to create.
It Angers Me When I Am Not Understood..Fox.Rock's Czar!...(but I guess now that every woman now is a bitch!..-through your eyes no thank you!)..You Win!
Thanks to the TV program SUpernatural I rediscovered this classic that I use to listen to when maybe I was 10, dont quite remenber exactly. I am now in my late forties.

This song actually helped me learn a little more about music theory, specifically the use of the relative minor!
If it wasn't for me hearing this song, I wouldn't have known so much about the relative minor.
Note that the verse is in A♭Major, and the chorus is F minor (the relative minor to A♭Major).

Joe and he swapped up guitars because Jimmy needed the effect that the Sunburst had and have it easy to move between... Whole lotta love anyone?

djfisher, thanks for the Steppenwolf reference but its worth looking into how the term "heavy metal" came from Navy people (US and UK alike) , many 1960s rockers of course had connections with these, the Navy were talking about really big bits of metal fired from naval guns, you can find the phrase heavy metal in navy stuff from and about at least the late 1700s on.
And BTW not that he would take the "heavy metai" label but search Deniz Tek for the genuine article. F4 pilot, guitar hero.

JAMES GANG CAN REALLY GROOVE, ESPECIALLY FOR A TRIO!! THESE ALBUMS ROCK SO MUCH YOU CAN LISTEN TO THEM OVER AND OVER AND NOT TIRE OF THEM THEY DEFY GENERATIONS THEY SOUND AS GOOD TODAY AS THEY DID THEN
joel70228 9 months ago
Actually the term "heavy Metal" was penned by John Kay from Steppenwolf if you listen to the lyrics of "Born to be Wild" and it refered to the sound of a Harley Davidson motorcycle at the time.
djfisher3 9 months ago 12
@djfisher3 agreed - "I like smokin' lightnin' - heavy metal thunder" - PROPS for yer post
MagesseT1 6 months ago

Really? Is that the best you can do when you attempt to tell someone off?
lastrada52 3 months ago
@lastrada52 Well before i dump my 186 IQ on you, ill make it simple so that you and the rest of the room can understand...I noticed you were going up your own asshole and i really didnt want to follow you and im sure the rest of these nice folks didnt want to either!!!
whokeithmoon 3 months ago
@whokeithmoon - 186 IQ and you use words like "dump?" and start sentences with "ill" for I'll. I don't have to say anything more whokeithmoon "the rest of the room and the rest of the folks" (as you phrased it) now have a pretty clear picture of what you are without me saying much at all. And yes, thanks -- don't follow me. I don't want anyone following me up my own asshole who uses dead rock drummer's names for an ID. 186 IQ and that's the best ID you can come up with?
lastrada52 3 months ago
@lastrada52 well you must lead a very intresting life is all you can do is check spelling...wow you are lame..i feel sorry for you...speller checker guy, wow something to be proud of and your realitives can always say, yes he was the best spell checker i ever know, what a contrubution to society,....make sure i spelt that righ?? why did i waste my time with you..very lame sonny...
whokeithmoon 3 months ago

Short-lived but a GREAT lineup of talent! James-Gang picture is in the dictionary when you look-up 'classic rock'.

I love this song! I was only 13 when it came out. Did they have any other hits? Thanks
litenslick1 9 months ago 4
@litenslick1 Funk 49 was a big hit probably even bigger than this song. I've uploaded that one too. Unfortunately they didn't have a lot of radio hits like they should have but they do have really great songs. Like The Bomber, and so on.
Egista07 9 months ago 8
@Egista07 The reason why there wasn't any radio hits is this music wasn't commercial, like Donny Osmond was. They called it "Underground" or "Album Music" back in those days...Great Stuff, Walsh is in top form. Thanks for posting!

Only bad thing about this song is that the closing train crash isn't long enough. The version by Tesla stretches out the coda, like Walsh shoulda.
