Steve Howe is essential for the Yes sound..more so than Jon..Drama and FFH prove it (for me). Trevor Rabin Yes was the imposter..Poison-style guitarist and a band obsessed with hit singles. I am a Yes fan since 1972..and have seen them 30 times. This is just my opinion, kids, it's not a pissing contest.
I met Mr Howe in Nashville, and he was just such a gentleman...he agreed to put his initials under the pickguard of my ES175...i ran out to my car to get it! eh then showed me how to play this lovely intro...what a VERY nice man.
the only band member i have yet to meet is Chris...looking forward to that someday!
Classic Yes band for me are Anderson, Squire, Bruford, Howe, Wakeman. Very good musicians and no others like them and their works: The Yes Album (exceptionally without Wakeman),Fragile, Close to the edge, Tales ( with a great Alan White), Relayer ( without Rick again), Going for the one...that's golden age of Yes¡
@TheEvilMonarch Sorry your wrong, Yes is Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Bill Bruford, Tony Kaye and Peter Banks. Any version after that was just an imitation.
@MrManigus ah...i disagree...each line-up has had its own character, and each brought out some very special music.
Buggles Yes created Drama, uniquely their own, Rabin Yes was the only line-up that could have created Big Generator...each one has been a great thing for music...
WHAT A GREAT SONG!!! It's beatiful. I know that Benoit isn't Jon Anderson, but in some parts I think that Jon Anderson is singing and, I hope that I don't offend, Chris Squire is singing like David Glamour, and that's great!!!
Great footage man, very good! I agree with some of the posts, Benoit is not Anderson. It could be worse (Peter Gabriel Versus Phil Collins) Last but not least, unfortunatly there were 14 deaf people who watched this video. lol
Seen yes many times and they were amazing, then saw them with Benoit and a different keyboard player other then Rick or Oliver, never again. It doesn't sound as good as the original line up and Steve howes sound isn't the same. Benoit is fairly good but not as good as Jon Anderson.Yes concerts used to sound as good as their music on vinyl, not anymore
I read in a Bass Player Magazine when they interviewed Chris Squire, that Jon Anderson was sick at the time when they replaced him temporarily with this nice fellow. Chris Squire said he had found him on YouTube playing in a tribute band. So Cool! Good job, Benoit !!!
They should have called themselves Cinema after Drama and threw him out for good with his Holy Lamb and Circus of Heaven . Reggae is bad enough without Jon wrecking YES songs with it.
I wish some of these people would give Benoit, and the rest of the band, the credit they deserve. These videos on Youtube don't do them justice... they used to be powerful performers, and still are. Bravo Yes!
Damn shame what they did to Oliver. Downes doesn't have the same finesse. And the boards Oliver selected for this tour were much better than the Roland gear Downes is using.
I feel it is very nice of YES to continue to tour and bless society. In the 80s, who would think that such an excellent band would still be playing in 2011? I saw YES last year and it was great. Miracles happen, and if our Jon is back in YES, I would not care if he still had his range, etc. it would be the crowning achievement to see YES with Jon. Benoit is fine, a humble man, and doing his best.
I like Benoit, but I do get the feeling he's straining a bit and will lose the ability to perform these songs if his range shrinks at all. I also noticed he sings much lower on the new album. Of course, Jon doesn't really sound like Jon anymore either. I'm just glad I can still go see live Yes music.
I have to admit that this is the first time I've actually heard Benoit sing and I'm pleasantly surprised. Jon like, but with his own personality. I'm glad I heard this. Band sounds tight, as they always have.
It still sounds good. The main thrust of this song has always been the guitar and and bass and since they are still "intact" it sounds just as good as ever.
There are some really hurtful and terrible comments on this post. I starting seeing Yes in 1976 at the old Boston Garden and saw them every year after that until the early 80's. I would be the first to point fingers at this band if I thought they were bad but they are not. They really sound fantastic and you can see in their faces that they are enjoying themselves. The new singer has tackled a tough job replacing Jon Anderson. Give him the credit he deserves.
@Orvonton11 shut your face, your pathetic, how can you say this abnout these guys?! They are getting on abit!, they dont want to be putting fabulous performances on! they just want to play there bit and keep the music alive, which is what they are doing! Jon is ill and unable to sing well, so this guy is covering, and he does a good job!!, Chris sounds great and so does Steve! Wakeman also does a good job and takes after his dad, so shut the hell up and keep your opinion to yourself
I think this version is fine. Benoit sounds similar to Jon Anderson, Oliver gets the job done. However it is not the same as Anderson's Yes. It's hard to put a finger on what is different. I don't think the new members have made the songs their won in a totally successful way yet. I think the other thing is that Anderson was not just a singer with a high voice. He added a certain atmosphere to Yes which I don't see now.
@DavidEBramley Totally agree. I think Anderson lent an authenticity to the lyrics content, even if the words were accidental, or non-sensical - their meaning came from his spirit, which is something which attracted us to the music in the first place.
I can understand why Chris, Steve & Alan would want to keep going on tour.. however Jon was integral to that catalogue.
Also .. props to one of the best bootleg vids of Yes.. job well done
gd vid going in june to watch yes at the appollo checked the vid to c wot the new singer sounds like it gd but he no JOHN ANDERSON GUTTED HE NOT THERE AND MY WIZARD ON KEYBOARD MASSIVE WERP GUYS !!
Nothing wrong with these vocals. This fellow's sound fits in far better than Trevor Horn did on the older songs in my opinion, though Drama is a great album! I can;t wait for the new one. I'm ready. As long a Squire is in it, it's still Yes to me.
I will say that this does sound a bit sluggish, maybe a little sloppy, even. Howe's really the only one that seems on top of his game here, which doesn't really surprise me since he played with both bands each night when Yes toured with Asia. A truly amazing musician, a true musical athlete.
A.W.R. Jon, Rick and Trevor......writting and working on putting a band together....Jon even was a far as to say that he would like to have Roger Dean do the album cover., Either summer 2011, or spring 2012, waiting on Trevors schedule and "timing". That will be the "new YES"!
just lovely...saw them in Cle on 3/22 and it was an exceptional concert. Yes does not seem to disappoint.....glad they can still tour. Thanks for posting!
I've been a YES fan since 1975 , so reckon I'm entitled to an opinion ... I've seen this lot live . I like this lineup ... Oliver is becoming his own man , and Mr David is doing fine. Finally this is the best version of "Starship" in years !!!!! Now , what about that new album ? BRING IT ON !!!!!!!
@weitzen YAH!! I agree...whats really cool is we're getting to see first hand ...exactly what Wakeman was talking about a was back .I believe '92 when he stated that Yes would eventually be taken over by their sons and continue on for another 20-30yrs...now THATS awesome...
@rextacy444 only since the release of FFH has Geoff been playing with Yes. OBVIOUSLY you are watching Oliver play in this video which was record in March.
@DeadMikeDOTcom Oh okay. Thanks for the info; I'm not very familiar with how either one of them looks. I did see them last Sunday in St. Louis, and Geoff Downes rocked an awesome keytar solo during Starship Trooper. It was an awesome show, much better than some of their YouTube stuff led me to believe. Chris Squire was killing it!
Benoit sounds a lot better live than in this videos on Youtube. He really hit the high notes during CTTE. Thats what made me go see them 3 times in the past few years. Might be heading to Charlotte in a few weeks to see them play there.
I think Steve Howe should have done the talking during Yes' career instead of Jon Anderson. Steve doesn't seem uncomfortable talking to the audience like Anderson always has in my opinion.
I was at this show! It was Phenomenal!! I love seeing shows at the HoB!! No Jon Anderson but Benoit David was excellent! What can you say about Howe, Squire, and White? Masters all! Oliver Wakeman was excellent impersonating his dad. This was a special night and a superb opening to their new 2011 spring tour. If they come near you I recommend you go!!
Thanks a lot. Great. Steve Howe rocks. Wonderful.
