  • Thanks so much!! Great videos, great instruction, and great results. We really appreciate it! Many thanks and have a wonderful Christmas!

  • great vid thx

  • I would just like to say that I have never commented on a video before but this actually helped me and worked perfect for me. I will say one thing though for some reason my power button wont work when I have the front on. This isn't a huge deal because I just use the remote instead. But just wanted to know if you had any ideas. Also just so everyone else knows I have never done anything electronic like this before and it worked great for me. Thanks again.

  • thank you tremendously. your videos were great for a beginner like me. you are awsome!

  • alright so I just finished doing the whole method. Same everything, and exact same heat paste. I now have 3 RLOD then it goes to 1 light. Error Code is 1311. Any ideas? No help from the forum

  • yup still running. i dont use it much cause i have 3 more but it worked fine this weekend

  • Just thought I'd update on how it worked out for me. It's been 4 months and still going strong. If you do this fix correctly, it's worth the effort.

  • awesome job. 16 bux and a couple of hours and im back. really appreciate it. hope it stays runnin for a while

  • @whiteycooper is it still running???

  • You sir, are my saviour.

I am a total doorknop when it comes to this stuff, but I followed your tutorial. It was easy, and for someone like me with no expirience in this stuff it was very detailed and explained.

I followed everything step by step, very slowly taking my time (it took me a total of four and a half hours) but in the end I achieved a wonderful goal: no more red light. My xbox360 is now working flawlessly, and I have you to thank for that.

So lawdawg0931, you have my eternal thanks.

  • Excellent tutorial a few things:

    t9 screwdriver--Sears & Robuck

    Arctic Silver--Radio shack

    10mm scres-Home Depot

Use lacquer thinner on a q-tip(small amount) to clean the chips.Much better than alcohol(let it dry thoroughly!). Also I had to remove the credit card pieces as the heat sink did not sit tight against the chip and a had 2 red lights . I repeated the process removing the chips and the unit was fixed. Also, it is not necessary to remove the fan motor to remove the mother board.

  • Dude, you are the man. My xbox was out of commission for 10 weeks, went to home depot and bought the parts listed on an xbox scene thread, and followed you to the letter. Works like a charm. Thank you so much!

  • Holy crap!! After a year since my Xbox 360 ran properly, I finally got it back up and running thanks to this tutorial. I was planning on buying the updated hardware system but not anymore. Thanks a million man!!

  • This is the best and most detailed repair video I could find, it worked for me follow the instructions and you can't go wrong! Thanks for the great videos!

  • mine is still showing two rings. did i do something wrong?/

  • so did you basicly replace the x-clamps? and does your dvd-game player work because i couldent help noticeing that you had an old hitachi disk drive.

  • awesome tutorial ... followed exactly ... got a free hand-me-down xbox360 (90nm) working in about 2 hours. i didn't believe it would happen but it did. Total cost: $5

  • man even tho I did the same thing.. it went 3 ring on me again the nxt day.. so what do I do now do the same thing?

  • My xbox died about a week ago and my warranty just ran out a few months ago. Tonight I Dr. Frankenstein-d it back together with this fantastic tutorial. Just got up and running and seems to be working well!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  • I was seeing no problem up until about an hour ago it stoped with the three red lights and was working for about a day and then just stoped any answers will be apreciated

    Sincerly,

    Jamez

  • It works great my xbox is working perfect but one question how long will this last is it a permanent fix (I got the xbox from a cousin whom gave it the rrod and went and bought a new one and then gave it the rrod I don't play it as much as him and was wondering just how long this will last) any info will be greatly apriciated

    Thanks,

    James

  • lawdawg0931 Great walk through. I followed everything step by step but now have 3 red lights instead of the one intially. Any ideas??? Also the graphics heat sink is different than the one you have. Thanks

  • THANK YOU!!!! Awesome walkthrough! XBox is working again!

  • your instruction were thee most detailed instruction i've encountered on youtube. Thanx for saving me some doe. I was about to buy a new 360 until I found our tutorials.

  • I followed your instructions carefully. I am working on an Elite...Light the unit back up after using all your steps and get three red lights that DON'T go away. The freaking heat syncs don't get the least bit warm.....any suggestions? Thanks.

  • This really helps. Don't do the penny trick whatever you do. And def don't listen to the guy on here with the "Bad Religion" Xbox. Gimme a break... who spray paints an Xbox?? Where they do that at??? lawdawg0931 knows what he is talking about.

  • fan goes speedy immediately ! why .... heatsink doesn't fit tight !!

  • why are the fans speeding up?

  • still gettin 3rrod and i followed step by step AHHHH!!!!!

  • law dog........ your karma has increased. i can now play fallout 3 again. AND the best game evr made (dead rising). cheers and thanks a shit-ton.

  • it realy works. i have it too

  • hahaah lol..wil see..hop it works for me..im a trying...ps..playstaion 1 2 3 kick ass..

  • so all you did was clean it and remove the clamps? Microsoft needs to get their act together.

  • Just finished fixing my 360!!! This DOES work!!! Thanks Lawdawg0931. You're the man.

  • i did this fix like 3 months ago and it is still working like a charm no problems so far

    360 ROCKS!!!

  • Worked! Thanks alot dude =D

  • MINE HAD 3 RED LIGHTS SO I OLLOWED YOUR INSTRUCTIONS FROM START TO FINISH..TURNED IT ON AND HEY PRESTO FIXED PROPPER WICKED SHIT THING IS GOT SO GIDDY CUZ I FIXED IT I KNOCKED MY GLASS OF ORANGE OVER ALL OVER THE MAIN BOARD NOW THE RED LIGHTS HAVE GONE BUT SO HAVE THE GREEN ALL IM GETTING NOW IS SMOKE AND PLENTY OF IT...BAD TIMES...;o[

  • Not worth it. Much easier to send it in to a repair place... way less hassle and they actually got it to work. Trust me... I tried to fix mine and ended up making it worse... finally sent it in and for WAY cheaper than Microsoft charges, got it fixed and I KNOW it was done right instead of trying to mess with it myself. Haven't had any problems with it since, and actually, they modded it for me too... now I can play burned games. Talk about saving money.

  • I did it. It worked and I'm killing Nazi Zombies again.

  • you are awesome!! i did everythin you said and it turned on perfectly.. although my cd drive seems to be acting funny it seems like its making these scratching noises but it is still able to read discs. but nonetheless this broken xbox 360 was gven to me for free so now i just fixed it up and now its working you the mannn

  • nice 1 dude this worked 4 me,

people not getting 3 lights doing all this?

i had 2 lights and it was shutting off after 20 seconds, i checked the spaces between dies and heatsinks, then tightened the screws again and presto she worked, oh and when i was cooking it it didnt go two 2 lights i just let it get real hot for five mins

  • Worked like a charm, thank you for your help!!!!

  • The last TEN comments I have the EXACT problems: extremely loud fans then shutdown 2 lights.

I even managed to play a lil' bit same bs after.

    GRRRR.

The best software on the worst hardware! What a paradox!

  • I noticed your fan was going crazy in rpms. Is that because the heatsinks were still a little toasty?

  • I had 3 red lights and followed the exact same steps as this video, but now after starting the Xbox 360 the fan is really loud, then stops after a few seconds and I get 2 red lights... any idea how to fix this? I also used the same parts as in this video...

  • I followed the same tutorial and it worked great for about 4 months. However, I am now dealing with the really loud fan as well. I opened up the xbox figuring that I needed more arctic silver stuff but that didn't work. Now, the xbox gets really loud and finally goes to overheat mode with the 2 red lights.

  • yes i have this same problem, the xbox works but the fans are going like crazy. no more 3 rings, now about like 25 secs after boot up xbox shuts down and has two red rings anyone know how to fix this?

  • Yes i had the same thing, you go ahead and tighten the SCREWs really hard. Then it worked for me. But now i get 3 red lights even after i overheat so the xclamp fix didnt work for me :(

  • i get the same just did it when i truned on i got the 3 reds, turned off and got a really loud fan and one red, turned off got loud fan and green for about 20 secs then 2 reds. any answers

  • @aadkeski ye its broken.. send it off if its still in warranty

  • What's your opinion on boring out the existing holes in the casing in order to accomodate for the heads of the M5 bolts? Would you say it would make for a better fix?

  • yah didn't work for me....y????

  • Thank you very much for this tutorial!!! I followed your instructions and now our x-box 360 work like new!!! Thanks!

  • I do not have the washers are they important?

  • I had three red lights and I followed your guide here on youtube, but instead of replacing the XClamps I just bent em back to normal.. now, when I turn on my xbox it shows two red lights, but the thing is when the red lights turn on the fans begin to whirr, but 10 seconds later they stop and just stays like that.. has someone got any idea? Ive been busting my ass off trying to get it fixed. I would really appreciate an answer.

  • Heatgun your ram chips :D

  • Thank you for a logical explanation of why xbox 360's fail and over heat. I had only two red lights even upon starting my xbox. I watched your video's and followed your instructions and so far no red lights. Thanks again. Easy to follow, simple instructions. The only thing I would recommend is the next time you make a video (if ever) try to angle the camera so you head doesn't get in the way at times.

    Thanks Lawgawg! You rule!

  • congrats man :D

  • Great Tutorial man!!!!!...i was bolting the mobo to the case(drill holes) and i think it was flexing the board when i screw it to the metal case.......you solved this prob for me..Thankyou

  • Love it, I after about 5 mins I got scared on the cook stage, and the heat was to high to touch, so it didn't get to 2 red lights, but i'm sure it cooked enough, put the whole xbox back together, prayed and it works!!!! I'm amazed lol, didn't think it would :P

  • few

  • men it works, but a fow mins later it get froze.. :S.. what shoul i do

  • I just want to say thanks for this great set of videos. fixed my xbox today ^^

  • Another once fixed!!! Thanks, man. Everything went perfect! The only think I would recommend is to use masking tape to hold the screws in place while you turn the board over to mount the sinks.

    I'm pumped right now!!!

  • wow your fans were getting pretty loud at the end

  • Cheers got mine working, thanks heaps

  • Thanks! Nice vid except when you block shots with your head...lol. :-) My 360 is all good now and I thank you!

  • dos this fix it for ever

  • no. i can tell you why. the REAL problem is that the heat sink for the graphics processor doesnt get enough air flow. i know this because i fixed mine and then felt the heat sink after 30 minutes of playing a music cd and WOW was that hot. i put a fan directly over it and it runs so cool now. you wont be able to close the xbox up like before but it will last. to me this xclamp fix plus the fan over the heat sink is the real fix.

  • xbox is a piece of shit

  • just done this on my 3 year old xbox, worked first time!!!

  • Dude........you did it for me too!! You Rock. Thanks. I fixed it for under $20!!!!!

  • i followed this exactly and it worked for bout an hour. then it turned back to e71. now it does this regularly unless i over heat it again. i think that keep overheating will break it in the end and its really anoying. any ideas? please reply!

  • This means you have a broken solder under one of the chips and it will need a reball.

  • Hey nice vid...I have a problem though maybe you can help. After doing this, seems that I have a red light on the power brick now. I heard that means the mobo is fryed...I posted on the forums you mentioned, and yet to have an answer, and at the posting of this message I've yet to be able to log back on. Thanks for your time!

  • The screws may be too tight and one of the heatsinks may be touching one of the resistors on one of the chips.

  • Followed it only could not get M5-.8 x 10, as I am in Canada, different measurements, I have 10-32x1/2 which i believe is the same thing, anyone can correct me if im wrong. but when i went to cook the box, i didnt get the 3 lights and then have to wait.... it was just 2 lights right away, and the heatsyncs are not getting hot, any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I had the same problem with the M5 in Toronto - can't believe no store has it! The size I got instead was the 3/16 X 1/2 screws from RONA, comes in a 10-pak for a couple bucks... Thing is it's pressed tight against the inner-casing, but cuz of the 1/2-inch screw length, it still required 1metal+1nylon washer on each side of the motherboard for it to fit snug tight...I might consider drilling holes into the casing, like some other tutorials suggest...

  • I don't know if anything I said above makes sense because to be honest I just smoked up and am loading up my fixed freakin xbox! Thanks for the videos, lawdawg!!!

  • HELP!!! i have done everything that was shown(i didnt put the case back , i tried it befreo i did) but i let is overheat untill it turns to only 2 red light then i turn off, turn straight back on again and it just comes up with the 3 red lights again.

should i let it cool down before turning it back on after its overheated?

  • ok so i did let it cool down and it still didnt work so i went back took it part and put more thermal paste on the processors now the xbox just wont even turn on???

  • How many times have you performed the xclamp on that xbox

  • Wow I haven't even tried it yet as my Xbox 360 died tonight after 3 minutes of play (it's 3 years old!) for the first time ever, but your vids make me feel so secure about it working tomorrow!! I just need to find some arctic silver thermal compound now, where did you get yours??

Thanks again for all the time and hard work, your vids seem SSOOOOO much more legit than anyone else's! :D

  • i got it at radio shack =]

  • Does this work for 1 ring or death E74 error?

  • I followed this and it worked, Many many thanks :)

  • Nice Vids Pal :) I Was Just Wondering If you Scratch the motherboard or damage or put pressure on the little command chips can it make your xbox 360 rod ? as my freind tried attemting it and turned it on half way through as he couldnt get x clamps off but lifted them abit and got the three red lights instead of two what could it be instead of him continuing ?

  • Been up and running for a few days now - so far so good. Been taking extra care to keep it cool (case mod, etc...) Just curious - what's the average lifespan you've seen for consoles that have followed your method? Thanks a million for posting this video and not charging for a "guide". Even if it's not permanent I had fun doing it.

  • why do i trust teens my age more then grown ups 3-4 times my age

  • i hear your fans speed up to top speed at the end, is this a normal side effect of this fix?

  • followed this tutorial and everything is working great so far. 20 minutes in ;)

  • I think the fan sped up because he had to cook the Xbox, so it might be getting the heat out...

I am not sure but that may be it.

  • Followed your guide, step by step but now the Red Ring of Death is constant, right after I turn it on, and the power supply box now turns Orange, instead of staying Green.

Broke the warranty by doing this, hope you have a solution?

  • OK, first off - if you voided a warranty by doing this - that's on you. I always state "only if you have no warranty" That should be obvious. Step-by-step? AS5 thermal compound, not some knock-off? I need more info on what exactly you did, & this would be better in the X-S forums listed in the video.

  • nvm lol. read the forum and question was answered

  • watched all 6 vids and yes a very nice tutorial. one question though (i may have missed the explanation). why did you leave out the x-clamps? why not put them back in?

  • X-clamps by design cause the problem to start with. It causes severe flexing of the board, which comprimises the solder joints.

  • Glad to help.

  • very good, elaborate and comprehensive tutorial. nice job! i was gonna try this in a couple of days and your video gave me some good pointers, thanks!
