  • great idea! i wonder, do u still use this method, Dave?

  • @AXELGRIZ - sure when needed.

  • lol at for the love of god im losing my pencil XD

  • great vid dave! now my improv should sound better.

  • "for the love of god"..

lol, you clearly play for Vai xD..

great lesson, I'm really gonna try that

  • dave, your vids rock man. so many!

  • nice approach

    i dig your helpful vids

  • Your a lefty...but play right handed guitar...

Did you find it harder to learn?

  • no, it was just natural.

  • i get asked the same question all the time. i never did understand why it was so natural, but it makes guitar shopping so much easier! haha

  • I remember thinking it was weird to play "right handed" while being right handed. My right hand had a lot more "finesse" than my left, so I never understood why my right hand wouldn't be my fretting hand.

    However, now it's like that:P

  • many players do that for example michael angelo batio and dave ofcourse

  • Now i know why groupies exist :D

  • try useing a sharpie next time. you can't see the pencil on the low res.

  • You can't erase Sharpie

  • Hahaha. Dave, I guess this guy doesn't understand the concept.

  • Ace, just ace. I'm gonna get started on that, as soon as i get home.

  • Great lesson

Btw, what will you be using your other account for, Dave? Will you upload videos that are not ROTW related?

  • Fantastic lesson dave

  • Oh for the love of god I'M LOSING MY PENCIL!!!

  • lol i'll buy you a decent pencil

  • Thanks for the lesson really helped

  • Dave, I am curious about the time you spent at G.I.T. what skill level did you enter with, and leave with. Was it beneficial?

Another very nice rotw too by the way.

  • are you lefty? why do you write with one hand and play guitar with another :p

    cool lesson

    thx dave

  • I'm ambidextrous.

  • wow, that must be cool at two handed playing does it?

    regards

  • Im exactly the same..left handed but play guitar right handed. You think that gives us a head or a bit of a handicap?

  • neither really, except that there's a much larger selection of right handed guitars.

  • wish i was ambidextrous XD

  • That is very much like something I'd do. Back when I could only read tablature and didn't have the internet or any direction at all, I'd just draw a measure and put in random notes and sometimes it actually sounded pretty good.

  • Great lesson as always. Maybe you should sell Riff of the Week pencils. "Got lead?"

  • HAHAHAA

  • this is my favorite lesswon of yours of all time. Thanks dave

  • Thanks man!

  • when he said oh for the love of god they should have played for the love of god just to take the mik since dave was in steve's band

  • it good that youre giving a lesson on very basic reading too. buwhy say 16tnotes instead of semiquavers? it would be a good idea to give the technical names of the note values too

  • Technically, "semiquavers" isn't really used here in the US.

  • I would agree with that, US terminology being different than elsewhere but wait, non troppo presto with those semiquavers, what about 32nd notes demisemiquavers and so on. In a way the subdivisions of 16th and 32nd are really a lot simpler. From another left handed ambidextrous guitarist who plays a "right" handed guitar. Glad to see someone else has got it right :-)

  • Great vid (as always). I didn't know Dave was left-handed thou.

  • Very interesting idea - I'll give it a try. BTW, you blew the lead right out of your pencil. So if you're looking for it, it's somewhere to your right.

  • Wow, how interesting! I'd have never thought of something like that. What kind of guitar do you play? I know it's an ibanez 7 string but I can't find it on the website. Do they still make those guitars?

  • My guitars are custom one-offs. Coming to a store near you in 2???

  • you're a lefty but play right handed?.. peculiar..

nice vid btw... not the what you've got us used to but helpfull none of the less

  • Very helpful! You're a lefty, but you play a right-handed guitar?

  • lmao...me and you both dood, those damn pencils are a bitch.

  • You're left handed??? and play right handed???? Crazy Dave!

  • I didn't know that he was left-handed...

  • simple yet effective. Nice one dave

  • Never tough of that, great!!!!

BTW, did you find your pencil leads? hahaha

    Party on Dave!!!

  • Awesome teacher!!!

  • You're lefthanded but you play righthanded... Why's that?

  • Awesome Teacher!!!

  • Awesome Teacher!!!

  • Great as f'in always dave !!! (Could wejust have one little riff though pleae?)

    You Rock!

    Hugo

  • for the love of god i'm losing my pencil!

this is a simply amazing lesson. i'll post a video response in a few days.

    5 stars, of course.

  • Interesting, I'll have to try that out.

I didn't know you were left handed. How come you play a right-handed guitar?

Oh and can you do a RotW on how to intonate your guitar and work with the tross rod?

  • ty verry much :)

  • HAHAHA 3:47!

  • Cool been playing for 28 years never even thought about it! Thanks Dave!

  • I really enjoyed this ROTW. Great advice! Not such a great pencil though!

  • thanks dave! can you do an episode just on all your gears and guitars? thanks!

  • I didn't know you were a lefty!!!

  • Excellent lesson!! thanks for giving and incentive to be creative !

  • this riff of the week was really nice =D
