  • This can't be a live line, that sling temporarily holding the conductor couldn't possibly withstand 500 kV. Also, the linemen standing on the conductor aren't wearing the conductive hoods you'd expect to see on an energized line.

  • ...no 'fires' in back 'em... it's the mist from Niagara falls... "Horseshoe" & "American" + "Bridal Veil."

  • does anyone see the forest fire in the background :o

  • Ok. I have a lot of respect for linemen and what they do, but there isn't really that much danger in their jobs. If anything, the pilot of the chopper has a more dangerous job then all those guys. If we were allowed to bring camera's into our plant I'd show you were the real danger lies in the field of power engineering.

  • @MrLiquidHound and if that helicopter were to crash right there, I guess those guys have nothing to worry about? Wake up and acknowledge that if you get electrocuted or have a helicopter chop you to bits the end result is still the same. Dead is dead, it's just how you get there.

  • @MrLiquidHound Ive came inches away from death 5 or 6 times in the last year alone. none of which had anything to do with electricity or helicopters. Line work is a mega large field and we do our best to stay safe but the field is masssssive. just sayin

  • I'm more interested in the crazy brush fires everywhere around them.

  • What are those bells for? I always wondered!

  • @GiR2007 Bells?

    What bells?

Do you mean the long thing with a lot of discs on it?

That is a ceramic insulator, it is that odd shape to prevent arcs.

If it was straight rain could fall on it in such a way that you got an arcover to ground.

  • @GiR2007 they're for target practice.

  • could shit like this be any reason linemen drink?

  • That was cool be carefull..

  • Hey guys! I got an idea! let's hang ourselves from a powerpole like 300 ft high, around a bunch of live 500 kv power lines with a helicopter dangling a big heavy wad of insulators right next to us! :D AWESOME! lol

  • ... Rob Moses hydro...

    At's Niagara Falls' mist a-risin'

    in th' back-gtound...

  • What is on fire in the background?

  • much respect to you guys. my pops was a lineman with dominion virgina power for 27 years.

  • that pilot is awesome!

  • @asdfghjklkjhgfdsa555 yeah thats a precision chopper pilot right there.

  • Looking for a few good hot wire linemen crew moxxyproductiondot com My brother is a lineman and we have the greatest respect for them. We started a site so he could chat with fellow bro. linepowermendotcom

  • Helicopter driver is cool!

  • These are the guys that keep the power on..Thanks........

  • @avionicswirenut no problem. not many places you get paid and get an adrenaline rush like this

  • damn, they must have huge insurance premiums

  • Dude these guys got some major balls

  • is something on fire in the background?

  • mad pilot skill

  • @fannoj Thats mordor bro

  • What the hell is burning in the background?

  • nice chopper. thats a civilian version of the military MH6s

  • i'm like WTF! at first i thought the circuit was hot. but the slings holding up the line are not a good idea on a energized line! what happened to the good 'ol days when you would just sling the insulators over your shoulder and climb the steel?? lol

  • Dude I got mad respect for these guys, they must have balls of steel.

  • with a faraday glove on them ;)

  • Reminds me of "The Wages of Fear".

  • ok...?

  • @skythegeek,

I believe they have balls made of insulator ) - that's definitely better for their job :))

  • @skythegeek

yeah i respect them but i hope they don't have balls of steel, they'd just be electricuted every time they went up there. :D

  • @skythegeek not good maybe rubbber or else they will get electrocuted

  • @skythegeek not of steel because steel is energy conductible

  • @skythegeek Nah They're balls a fiberglass. Steel ones would ground the lines

  • @Toedrip lolz :D

  • @Toedrip

    "Nah They're balls a fiberglass."

    lolz!

  • @skythegeek No, the have balls of ebonite, cause it doesn't conduct current.

  • @mrwashe your mother was raped by a jewish sheep

  • @skythegeek Ceramic balls would probably serve better in this situation..

  • @skythegeek That wouldn't be very safe. Because NOBODY likes fried nuts.

  • @skythegeek shouldn't that be "balls of extremely hard non conductive material"?

  • @skythegeek This is just building of electrical line , there is no electricity .

  • @skythegeek I hope theyre something less conductive

  • GUTS - that's what I would call it. These are the same kind of guys that went to the moon back in '69

  • respect!

    (job with a view! :)

  • that takes huge balls

  • does the electricaty go through them and into the helicopter? like does the chopper have any impact on them not getting shocked?

  • No, the chopper is not grounded that's why they use it, it minimizes the chance that the linemen will get shocked.

  • fuck man, thats crazy, i hope these guys get a bonus

  • Very nice :D

  • skilled pilot

  • how do they do this without getting shocked

  • By not making contact with ground.

  • Bonding (connecting and elevating your potential to that of the conductor) and avoiding ground (closed circuit: ouch!).

  • @ Lexy015: doing this on a de-energized line. There is no way you could do this on a hot wire.

  • @weardguy: They never make contact with ground so they never get electrocuted, much like a bird standing on a power line. Working on live lines like this is actually a pretty common practice; considering these lines feed densely populated areas it is not practical to de-energize them.

  • @ elgavilan2000 : In this case, the lineman that gets the insulator in his hands to bolt it to the pole, does have a connection to ground: he is hanging on the pole itself, very close to the point where the insulator is bolted. If this was done on an energized line, he would be fried immediately: he 'bridges' a few off the bells of the insulator...

  • just watched the video again, i missed that part...you're right

  • @weeardguy actually they do do it on a hot line mostly helicopter linemen :) 500kv lines too .. they connect the helicopter and the man with a special suit so they are at the same potential so its not a big deal

  • You just can't do this work 'demonstrated' in the video on a hot line: they are changing a complete insulator: the lineman would get zapped immediately...

  • @MuayThai8548 What if there's a fault in the suit? Or something happens to cause an accident or a short? I'm sure those thIngs occur more often than most would think.

  • @RegistrationCop well i work for a utility and we have our hot gloves changed out and tested once a month so im sure they test their suit more often then that ..we work on volatages from 69,000kv to 345,000kv . when electrocution takes place its because the voltage found a path through you to ground . or when cross phasing occurs but that ends up being a explosion instead of just getting a shock .

  • Did the fire in the background have anything to do with the replacement of this? (I'm guessing this is in Florida)

  • i hope these guys are well compensated

  • Takes skill to do and beautiful to watch!

  • Wow
