This can't be a live line, that sling temporarily holding the conductor couldn't possibly withstand 500 kV. Also, the linemen standing on the conductor aren't wearing the conductive hoods you'd expect to see on an energized line.
Ok. I have a lot of respect for linemen and what they do, but there isn't really that much danger in their jobs. If anything, the pilot of the chopper has a more dangerous job then all those guys. If we were allowed to bring camera's into our plant I'd show you were the real danger lies in the field of power engineering.
@MrLiquidHound and if that helicopter were to crash right there, I guess those guys have nothing to worry about? Wake up and acknowledge that if you get electrocuted or have a helicopter chop you to bits the end result is still the same. Dead is dead, it's just how you get there.
@MrLiquidHound Ive came inches away from death 5 or 6 times in the last year alone. none of which had anything to do with electricity or helicopters. Line work is a mega large field and we do our best to stay safe but the field is masssssive. just sayin
Hey guys! I got an idea! let's hang ourselves from a powerpole like 300 ft high, around a bunch of live 500 kv power lines with a helicopter dangling a big heavy wad of insulators right next to us! :D AWESOME! lol
Looking for a few good hot wire linemen crew moxxyproductiondot com My brother is a lineman and we have the greatest respect for them. We started a site so he could chat with fellow bro. linepowermendotcom
i'm like WTF! at first i thought the circuit was hot. but the slings holding up the line are not a good idea on a energized line! what happened to the good 'ol days when you would just sling the insulators over your shoulder and climb the steel?? lol
@weardguy: They never make contact with ground so they never get electrocuted, much like a bird standing on a power line. Working on live lines like this is actually a pretty common practice; considering these lines feed densely populated areas it is not practical to de-energize them.
@ elgavilan2000 : In this case, the lineman that gets the insulator in his hands to bolt it to the pole, does have a connection to ground: he is hanging on the pole itself, very close to the point where the insulator is bolted. If this was done on an energized line, he would be fried immediately: he 'bridges' a few off the bells of the insulator...
@weeardguy actually they do do it on a hot line mostly helicopter linemen :) 500kv lines too .. they connect the helicopter and the man with a special suit so they are at the same potential so its not a big deal
You just can't do this work 'demonstrated' in the video on a hot line: they are changing a complete insulator: the lineman would get zapped immediately...
@MuayThai8548 What if there's a fault in the suit? Or something happens to cause an accident or a short? I'm sure those thIngs occur more often than most would think.
@RegistrationCop well i work for a utility and we have our hot gloves changed out and tested once a month so im sure they test their suit more often then that ..we work on volatages from 69,000kv to 345,000kv . when electrocution takes place its because the voltage found a path through you to ground . or when cross phasing occurs but that ends up being a explosion instead of just getting a shock .

What are those bells for? I always wondered!
GiR2007 11 months ago
@GiR2007 Bells?
What bells?
Do you mean the long thing with a lot of discs on it?
That is a ceramic insulator, it is that odd shape to prevent arcs.
If it was straight rain could fall on it in such a way that you got an arcover to ground.
Serostern 11 months ago
@GiR2007 they're for target practice.

does the electricaty go through them and into the helicopter? like does the chopper have any impact on them not getting shocked?
AnthraxByEmail 2 years ago
No, the chopper is not grounded that's why they use it, it minimizes the chance that the linemen will get shocked.

By not making contact with ground.
beaman220 3 years ago 2
Bonding (connecting and elevating your potential to that of the conductor) and avoiding ground (closed circuit: ouch!).
DJGahann 2 years ago 3
@ Lexy015: doing this on a de-energized line. There is no way you could do this on a hot wire.
