I will end this by saying that Hicks was easily the greatest comedian of his generation and that Wossy is one of the most overpaid and overrated BBC employees ever. However, I continue to hold that he didn't act disrespectfully toward Hicks in this interview, and that abusing anyone who appears alongside Hicks on screen isn't a great way to honour his memory.
It would seem he stuck very close to his material, it was difficult for Wossy to actually get relevant answers from him. The interviews I'd seen of Hicks tended to feel almost like promotions for his stand-ups, ironically.

The jester can make profound statements, make people laugh, and is the only one who can laugh at the King without losing his head. He isn't trying to outsmart, outclass or outdo Hicks. Hicks has been invited on his TV show and so Woss has to say things and engage with him. This show wasn't supposed to be a short Hicks standup clip, it was supposed to be an interview and Woss is just doing his job.

As soon as you say "you're not worth the effort," you lose the argument. It's effectively the same as saying "I can't think of a coherent argument." If you actually have a decent argument and some evidence, arguing with anyone doesn't take much effort at all.

I responded cordially, asking you for evidence of Wossy being disrespectful toward Hicks. You then just insulted me. I said we were being unfair on Wossy, you said we weren't. That's an argument, one that you went on to lose quite ungraciously.

I will end this by saying that Hicks was easily the greatest comedian of his generation and that Wossy is one of the most overpaid and overrated BBC employees ever. However, I continue to hold that he didn't act disrespectfully toward Hicks in this interview, and that abusing anyone who appears alongside Hicks on screen isn't a great way to honour his memory.

It would seem he stuck very close to his material, it was difficult for Wossy to actually get relevant answers from him. The interviews I'd seen of Hicks tended to feel almost like promotions for his stand-ups, ironically.

The jester can make profound statements, make people laugh, and is the only one who can laugh at the King without losing his head. Comedians - some of them, anyway, Hicks and Carlin and Pyror and Kinison and so forth - used comedy in order to send a message. Comedy can be a powerful vehicle.
