Semi-auto is only good for training for saving ammo. But when thw shit hits the fence you need something more.
The auto M-16A3 is mucn better than the burst M16A2/A4 because in close quarters and in real combat the semi and the burst wont do you much good. Thats why most american soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan use automatic M-16s not semi-automatic.
@MrSnipingPuppy M4 also has more malfunctions due to the shorter collapsible stock, has a shorter point range, and of course delivers lower projectile velocities thus a shorter fragmentation threshold. It is not a better performer (ballistics wise) than an M16. Just more versatile in tight spaces.
You also make a good point but in tru combat against troops with automatic rifles and machineguns, how much time do you think you'll have to aim and fire one round that will hit the target? The answer is about 0.4 seconds before you have to get into cover again. You'll have to shoot a burst, but around five rounds not three. And yes in CQB auto is best because again you have no time to aim. Noeone is going to wait for you to be precise.
@MARTINELECA I don't mean to correct, but that's not true. The vast majority of M16's used my US troops now are M16a4's with single and three round burst. Also, fully auto is not the best option for all combat. I'll agree, it's better than three round burst because I think 3rnd is harder to control than auto but no one goes into a CQB situation thinking auto is best. Semi is the absolute best if your goal is to actually hit something. Auto and burst are only good for suppressive fire and for fun

Yeah properly shouldering a weapon with a backpack/body armor on is harder than doing it without, the strap that comes around your shoulder blocks the stock or makes it uneven.

@BM309K58SMERCH There is a spent case deflector that deflects the cartridges away from faces of left handed shooters. The helmet is a MICH helmet without a cover, standard issue for USMC and US Army at the moment.
@IneptLogic LOL these guys are most likely Naval Seabees (combat engineers). Notice how he's firing the M16A3 (the full auto version of the M16A2). They're the only guys that use them.

Both of which are USMC installations.

He's not a Marine. Marines are issued the PASGT helmet, which is not what these two individuals are wearing. These guys have on MICH 2000, which has no lip on the front to act as a small visor. -- Two, Marines haven't been issued fully automatic M series rifles in years. SEABEE's, on the other hand, are issued rifles that are fully automatic as are some Army units. Also, the vests and uniforms are wrong. This could very much be contractors or some type of program for shooting.
@IneptLogic If you have first hand knowledge as a former marine ignore this, but I'm pretty sure USMC adopted the MICH, it's been standard issue to my knowledge for years. There is an article that states that it has been adopted as a replacement for the PASGT.

he's holding it wrong; the left hand should be slightly further up the barrel and not holding the mag. The mag is to close to the trigger to be held that way.

@futurerev21 yeah one problem with the A1 was that it could overheat easily. there is a good story on that happening to a soldier while fighting off a VC onslaught. it was one of the main reasons why they converted the A2 to fire in burst only. if you really want to make a comparision, search youtube for full auto A1 shooting, and then full auto A3 shooting and make a decision.

@MrJuanmendez313 He's holding it to the best of his abilities the length of pull is probably too long to begin with, then you throw the kevlar plates in on top of it. it is almost impossible to get a proper should weld to the weapon.

he's holding it wrong; the left hand should be slightly further up the barrel and not holding the mag. The mag is to close to the trigger to be held that way.

So a weapon that has a burst function burst better then a weapon that you burst in auto...

@SoSteezyFeelSoEzee m16A1&A3 are semi and auto. M16A2&A4 are semi and burst. the one he is shooting is an A3 you can tell by the front handgrip. m4s are still semi and burst. fully auto rifles are useless, hell even burst is usless. well placed shots on semi ftw. plus it conserves ammo.

@yzf91 Now the Rk62 could have been a great idea; they could have changed the layout of the weapon, put the selector switch, mag release and the charging handle in someplace... oh, I don't know, reachable. But in the end, it was just another AK clone, same AK ergonomics(which is unsuitable for anyone other than a peasant army or a militia) and with a crappier stock and about 600kg of extra dead weight.

@futurerev21 yeah one problem with the A1 was that it could overheat easily. there is a good story on that happening to a soldier while fighting off a VC onslaught. it was one of the main reasons why they converted the A2 to fire in burst only. if you really want to make a comparision, search youtube for full auto A1 shooting, and then full auto A3 shooting and make a decision.
