He'll get there, maybe even next term (if he wins). I'll point out a couple things:
1) It is largely inevitable. The NYTimes pointed out that when ppl change their minds on this, it's never from supporting gay marriage to opposing it; it's always the other way. So support is building, slowly but steadily and in a solid way.
2) It's a state issue, not federal. It'd help if he said he favored it, but that's one step in a large puzzle. The real effort needs to be made as they are in Cali. and Wash.
this guy is a liar and a hypocrite like everybody else. whats barack santorum talking about? the fact he gets upset at the GOP for not defending a gay soldier who was booed at a debate, and then gives this bullshit excuse of an answer on gay marriage, is proof he is the same as the rest.
I am sick of people pulling out the "I have alot of close personal friends who are..." card. It's so fucking patronising and cowardly. It's like responding to the question "How do you feel about having a black president?" with "I've met some really nice black people. I'm not racist." You didn't answer the question, you're just trying to make yourself look good.
I think that it's disgusting and just typical that they would let us fight and die for our country and not be able to get married. I thought that marriage was a human right not a heterosexual privelage.
Fuck you Obama, I know ur the first black president, and good for. Im not gonna lie, I told my family to vote for you, cuz I thought u had potential, and then when u got into office, u didnt do shit for me or the gay community. Why do u have to think about this? Why does this have to even be VOTED on?! If u have people that would never pass this bill of gay marriage...well lets face it, u shouldnt have homophobic people working with you or for you. If I grow up,and still look to find tht I cnt
Why do we want to control everyone? Government free marriage is the only way to fix this issue. Time to change the argument. Why are we asking the government to control our lives? Why do we want the government to recognize anything? For or against should not be the argument, government free marriage NOW!
@sarah9miller Right on! I agree with you 100%. I checked out the government-free marriage website and agree with the principles they espouse 100%. Get government out, solve the issue.
@sarah9miller Right on! I agree with you 100%. I checked out the government-free marriage site and agree with the principles they espouse 100%. Get government out, solve the issue.
@sarah9miller I see where you're coming from, but Government passes laws and the law is a basis for legal rights that married couples are able to benefit from...
"We're all gonna have to have a conversation about it."
No, what we're actually gonna have to do is listen to a bunch of conservatives & religious ppl tell us how horrible disgusting & undeserving the gays are, stirring up animus and paving the way for more homophobic verbal & physical assaults & hate, further widening the cultural division in this country...and, in the end, passing it anyway. Because it is INEVITABLE.
Why not just skip all the bullshit and get on with it?
Obama has said he is against prop 8, against that proposed federal marriage amendment, and that he will not block gay marriage if it happens. He is for gay marriage. He is just trying to keep popularity as high as it can be. The gays still love him (well enough of them anyway) and the religious anti-gay marriage people still cling onto obama saying he is not for gay marriage... but lets face it, he is
@DrNHand1994 How in the hell supporting gay marriage, or fighting for it, something that is politically disadvantageous. If he fought for something, that means he would have a spine, and the base he spat on would consider liking him again. Besides, of what he has shown us, he doesn't know how to make decisions that would benefit his popularity, so your excuse is nothing realistic.
@snipzor I am not sure what you were trying to say to me exactly... I wasn't really trying to defend Obama. In fact, if almost any other democrat were to try to challenge Obama in 2012 I would be all over them most likely. I simply think that Obama is using gay marriage as a political tool. If you are moderate you satisfy everybody and nobody. Everybody gets a little something but nobody gets exactly what they want. I just think thats what he is doing with gay marriage.
Regardless of when it will happen, it will happen. I though the Pres handled the question very well about gay marriage and he's right, we still need to debate this for all the points of LEGAL value, this is not from a religious standpoint, I'm not religious nor should this be debated from that standpoint. This is about a traditional legal viable union that st8 folks enjoy and are entitled to and so should we. It's the RIGHT thing to do. NOH8
I don't know why he struggles with it--it wouldn't effect him one way or the other. That he continues to advocate "separate but equal" is really ironic.
@MaryJesusJoseph He might have meant it in a "separation of Church and State" way being torn between his Political opinions, Religious opinions, and even personal ones. During elections I remember him saying that he supports Civil Unions but "marriage" is up the the Church to decided. - I myself can not wrap my mind around how that works really. When a man and women get married they are given the title and legal right to them by the Government not by the church they attend..
@MyOwnCasket exactly, and what about the Gay couples that aren't Christian or aren't religious at all? Why should they be dictated by the Christian Church.
@PolytheisticDeities haha i tired to say the same thing, but I ran out of room in my last comment. But your right,a Man and a Women who get married who are also Atheists in the eyes of both the Church and State they are no less married then a Man and Women who are Christian and married. - I am not trying to be Anti Religion but i think the only way for the Government to make real and quick progress is to cut all ties from the church and not even talk about there own personal religious beliefs
@MyOwnCasket If "marriages" did only happen in churches he might have a point--but they don't. If he wanted to get the government completely out of "marriage" I might accept that--but that's not what he said.
He always says evolving, as if we don't know that it'll evolve right around his next election. Yea, just like evolution, it takes a damn long time to show significant change, and in this case the change will pop up either during the election (But will probably be a random mutation that doesn't last long) or will be post presidency. Probably after the elections at this rate.
@snipzor Also, who gives a fuck if he's evolving as he says, it's not about his ass, it's about other people and their wanting to get married. Maybe he'll wake up one day and be evolved enough to get around to tackling the issue? I hate this fucking dipshit lying so called president
@wntoply6 Not gonna happen any time soon by any politician. It's gonna happen state by state, and by the time there are only a few left to actually legalize in, the federal government will step in. This process will take 12 years.
@snipzor to the contrary, as it winds it way up to the supreme court, it will happen. guaranteed rights cannot be decided by majority popularity... by definition, they're guaranteed.
remember marriage is not recognized as rite. it's only recognized as a a civil right! unless a marriage is registered by a public municipality it is invalid, even if the pope himself performed the ceremony. & regardless of any religion's rules, divorce is legal if it's granted by a civil court, not by a religion.

Some gays have the courage to be fighting for this country while some homophobes have the audacity to sit on their fat lazy asses and criticize them?
