I just bought kindle 2, I dont think that a larger screen that pivots when you turn it, and pdf conversion is really worth the 500 dollars it costs. Im a gadget kind of girl, and the kindle 2 is perfect just the way it is, though, you're right, it does need a touch screen and track ball.
I am the proud owner of a Kindle 2 'global edition' and I did seriously toy with the thought of getting a DX. However, at $489 I can't justify getting one, especially now that for a mere 10 bucks more, one can get an ipad. Granted the ipad will not take the place of an ereader, the ipad offers more bang for the buck as far as features go. IMHO I see the price of the DX coming down now that the ipad is out.
I wanted to buy kindle DX but will wait first on the launching of kindle3 as it might be better than kindle dx as there's not much difference between kindle 2 and the dx excepth the size...
Snooks are slightly dumb, very overpriced. Do I really need to carry 3,500 books at one time that I can't even pass on? I coul buy 40 or 50 books for the same price, and share them. I really wish so muc technology was not in this gemeration, it's really ruining things.
dx is very nice. but i chose to go for the smaller kindle 2 mainly because of portability and general aesthetics. it's definitely the e-reader for choice for me,all the other e book readers that you can buy in the uk are much more expensive and don't work with macbooks. the kindle 2 is cheaper and much more suited to my needs. i can't wait for it to arrive!!!
Hello,I was just wondering if you think that the kindle 2 and kindle dx will be able to compete with the new ipad by apple, which is going to be very expensive. It is going to cost between what version you get. It will cost between $500 and $900.00,which is quite a bit more expensive. I wan't you personal opinion. I would appreciate a response back as soon as you can. Thankyou
i think as far as books go, the kindle's are definitely going to shine above the ipad. as far as everything else goes, the ipad is going to win the day. it is such a gorgeous piece of technology...although the ipad has got iBooks, they are not comparable to the reading experience from the kindles.
Amazon is freakin' nuts if they think that I would pay that kind of money for something which should be selling for $100 or less. They've lost touch with reality as has anyone who woul pay that for the privelege of paying for books from Amazon. Not in this decade I'm afraid.
college student myself, I got myself a kindle dx, Mind you I had to work to get the money. Though I may be worth it, since I had started college I had gathered a pdf versions of my book in case I didn't have them when I needed also with the large screen it will be great to view pdf files, tho there is room for improvement wrt pdfs. Also I wont need to carry books around when I travel and that is a huuuge plus... its expensive but it has its advantages.
I got a DX too but the pdf feature that they are advertising is just crap. The pdf works on DX just like a set of pictures. You can't use the table of contents to navigate, can't highlight or comment on it. You would rather convert your pdf files into pics and watch it on your digital picture viewer. At least then it will have colors!
I'm really glad I waited to get the kindle cause it was only $259 when I got it before xmas! And I had gotten a $100 gift card from my bank for Amazon so in the end I only paid $159 for mine and I've already saved way more than that in books!!! I love how people keep saying its to expensive...its a e-reader if you don't like to read why are you looking at it? Anyone who loves reading sees the amount of money you can save!!! Walk in to borders and try to buy a best seller for $10! Won't happen!<3
Not exactly, that book will one day be used for college text books, you look like a smart fellow and I'm sure you've seen the price tags for them. I'm not sure if some colleges are allowing students to download their textbooks onto kindles YET, but once it begins, you'll be saving TONS with one XD and a much lower price on the text books.
Hello, could you please tell me what is the best e-book reader today. I have been hovering around getting the kindle 2, kindle dx or the nook. I like the large screan e-reader known as the kindle dx,which is really expensive. I also like the much larger library that the nook has available compared to the amazon kindle library. I also like the idea that you can lend books on the nook for 14 days. Is there anyone you would recommend.
Boycott the amazon kindle for two reasons: crappy PDF ebook reader support and the outrageous price tag, it will be years before I give into this product which is currently unreasonable!
Hello you make some valid points but for me the DX is the way to go and i will be buying one. My eysight is bad and if I raise the font on the K2 I wont get too many words per page but with the DX I will for that reason alone I will cough and spit out the money.
I'm surprised how many reviewers are not addressing the potential for reading newspapers on the Kindle. I'm currently subscribing to the NY Times for all 7 days at a whopping $58 a month. I see the Kindle edition of the Times is $9.99/month. At those prices the Kindle DX pays for its self in about a year. From that point of view you can make a good case the $489 price is justified.
I would appreciate anyone addressing the pros and cons between print news and Kindle news.
This thing is hideously overpriced. As many others have pointed out, one can get a decent netbook, or a full blown laptop for the price that Amazon are charging for this.
One Kindle DX is about the price of 35-50 printed books. About 40% of Americans read one book or less annually. The DX would therefore be paid off in about 35-50 years if you are one of those 40%. HORRIBLE INVESTMENT.
rj12124 - you completely misunderstand the advantages of this unit plus the starting price of any new electronic device will soon be irrelevant given what that actual street value becomes. If you are happier with 35-50 printed books instead of a KindleDX have at it! All the more for the rest of us to buy!
I'm just saying that the price will reduce and the technology will get better. I remember buying a pocket organizer for $500 in 1997 and probably can get it on ebay nowadays for less than $30. Just give it time.
there's also magazines and newspapers and I would assume that if someone were to buy a kindle, they would be someone who reads more than one book annually
I bought one, love it and probably don't need it. I do have all my pdf documentation on it (related to my job). So, its nice to have the info there without going to my laptop.
If most Americans read only one book a year (so sad if that's true) then you are right. I read at least 20 books a year and would like to read more. I'm very interested in the DX but I'm still waiting for the price to drop....
damn, that's a great idea. You should copywright your comment in case someone gets any bright ideas from reading what you typed! But seriously, that's a heck of a concept.
I really wrestled with the idea of buying a Kindle 2 when it first came out because it was so expensive, but I ended up buying it anyway. My Kindle 2 can read magazines and newspapers just fine, and we'll see about textbooks this fall.
books are one of the greatest creation of all kind. I pity the fool who doesn't cherish the gift of reading - without it, many people would be SO much more ignorant.
Haven't read all the other comments, but don't count out the market unlocked by the larger screen with native PDF support.
For my personal use, the Kindle was always ideal. But I spend far more time reading technical and academic documents (PDFs) than I do leisure reading. I swore that if a larger screened device came out with the extras only on the Kindle, I'd be all over it.
Those who have to carry piles of articles and technical papers will eat this up! And many can afford it...
Way back in 1894, a little girl named Madeline Crothe was skipping through the woods when a mysterious man in black snatched her. He brought her to his house, tourtered her, and starved her to death. Send this to 6 videos in the next 30 min. and you will be safe, but if you don't... at approximately 1: 34 tonight you will wake up to see an aneorexic child holding a bloodied up knife and she will kill you
I really hope you're right in your WWDC thoughts of apple possibly bringing out an ebook reader (iBook). Maybe mix the 10" touchscreens and make a tablet/ebook reader (wishful thinking), make amazon step up their game a bit.
if i were them, i would update the kindle2 firmware with all the software features of the kindle dx, or as many as possible, because all the people who have supported them already by buying a kindle2 at least deserve that much.

Oh, so yeah. ^_^;; So I don't really have the need (or desire) for the Kindle Dx. My Kindle 2 ( Her name is Ashterah) is perfect for me. I'm in school, but chances are there aren't enough textbooks available yet; maybe in a few more years.
I do think there is a sizeable market for the Kindle Dx; every other thread on the Amazon forums is about people pissed off that the Kindle DX came so soon after the Kindle 2, or about people selling their kindle 2's for the DX.
I would have to disagree with the idea that a touch screen is needed. I've always had too much trouble with touch screen keyboards- I need the tactile feel of depressing a button, to know I have actually hit the key I was intending to hit. Touch screens can't do that for me. Also, if you've seen the Sony Prs 700, it's a hot mess; Yes, touch screen, but because of that it has a VERY (dare I say impossibly) reflective surface you cannot get rid of for love or money and words are blurry.
I completely agree with you. After all the hype, when I got a chance to see the Dx, I was confused. No buttons on the left side? And it looked so... big. I mean, that's the point, a larger screen, but I love the portability of my Kindle 2 (OR Kindle 6' as it's to be known, now) and I think that the Kindle Dx... by it's nature sacrifices that. Also, I just didn't see a huge number of improvements, be they hardware or software on the Kindle DX; combined they could probably be counted on one hand.
& Im angry that I ordered my Kindle 2 for the DX to come out a week later :( very sad, but with all these modifications the Kindle is going to evolve into a flat laptop -_-
This can save money though, As a university student it will be possible to download textbooks via TPB, saving a shit load of money and allowing you to keep massive numbers of texts in you bag. THe DX is way cheaper than buying all those textbooks. I am looking for something like this come the fall
1. Your reading my comment 2. Now your saying/thinking thats a stupid fact. 4. You didnt notice that i skipped 3. 5. Your checking it now. 6. Your smiling. 7. Your still reading my comment. 8. You know all you have read is true. 10. You didn't notice that i skipped 9. 11. Your checking it now. 12. You didn't notice there are only 10 facts Copy and paste to 1 video, tomorrow will be your best day ever! no matter what!
NATIVE PDF SUPPORT.......with a 9.7" diagonal screen. It's a buy! I would prefer TRUE 8.5"x11" screen, touch screen, operability with PUBLIC LIBRARY ebook formats that are protected, and full microsoft office compatability, but this is close enough. For me the PDF native inclusion sold me. Need it to read massive amounts of manuals etc.
I agree with you 100%. I think the price point is insanely high. If you were able to get access to a lot of content for free, then it would be more reasonable.
Your reading my comment 2. Now your saying/thinking thats a stupid fact. 4. You didnt notice that i skipped 3. 5. Your checking it now. 6. Your smiling. 7. Your still reading my comment. 8. When it comes to reading a book front to cover, the DX would be inferior to the K2. I like to physically position myself in a myriad of ways while I read; from seated, to stretched on a couch to lying in bed. K2 with it's small size/weight and convenient buttons on either side (why on earth would DX only have one side for page turns, even with an accelerometer) is a pure joy.
However, textbooks and magazines and PDF's and wikipedia full screen...I'm torn. I can still exchange my K2.
I wont be getting the kindle dx. I have the kindle 2 and yes I wanted a bigger screen, plus more space for holding books, but not at that price! I love my kindle 2. I brought it because of whispernet. But to "upgrade" to the dx would be a waste of time and money at this point. I like the screen but not the price. I also think they should have told ppl about the new version so as to make an informed decision about which one to buy. But hey if you have the money then go for it!
A massive prank will be pulled on "comedian" Fred on youtube.
What is trying to be done is get everyone that has a subscription to fred, to unsubscribe. If this is succsesful, then it will make the news, cause controversy,
i think that a larger ereader would have some demand in a business market if it had email support were presentations and ext. can be seen also manuals and training books but in a consumer market it makes no sense to have a large $500 e reader. the technology isn't that far were they can be a help over the original textbook
I will stick with my Kindle because it seems to be better in my hand. Kindle 2 is too skinny. DX is a good idea and I would love it for pdfs because the current kindle 1 and 2 mess up images in text books.
i personally hate these things as they are. books are valuable things to have. sure they might be more delicate than an e-book reader, but it's always nice and authentic to fill your home with them. i'd never be able to switch from good traditional books to these readers anyway.
Don't like it overall. I feel like Amazon is trying to ride the momentum of the Kindle 2. But I think part of the charm of the Kindle 2 is that its portable, where you can carry it around without much problem. This one seems ginormous and with the $500 price tag, way not worth it. I think this could have waited.
I'd rather have an iPod touch and turn the backlight off when outside or backlight to the lowest settings indoors. There's no way I'm paying $500 for an e-reader. Not even $400.
You could get a decent Laptop for that price!! That's outragous!! i would'nt pay 100$ for a stupid ebook reader. and get a Netbook if you want portability, atleast then you could do other stuff than just read books
Wow, thank you for your thoughts on the Kindle DX. It was to the point. I"m a skeptic as well. I owned both Kindle 1 and Kindle 2, and just finished selling the former last night. I think of it this way: you can always find a way to profit off the device by either selling it to someone else and having enough money left over to purchase the next generation device, which should cover the cost. It's expensive though. Have you heard about Plastic Logic?
I purchased a sony ebook reader, not too long ago. it was between the PRS-505 or the Kindle 2. I choose the sony reader because of the native pdf support. With the release of the Kindle DX this summer i will be jumping ship
You see I love the idea of the kindle being a gadget freak or the Sony book reader, however I still don't think there is anything that can beat buying a novel, opening it up and reading it, right down to the smell of a new book, I know that sounds silly. I love books, I never used to at school I was as thick as a plank of wood, now a bit older a wise I have developed a passion for collecting books. All the pros for the digital read are good but still a few fundamental cons for me. Take care mate
I might think about buying one for US$500, but I'm in Australia, so I was really wanting an international Kindle, although if they did announce one I doubt we would get it here down under. We don't even have amazon and all of the online stores I've found are no cheaper than our brick and mortar stores.
Fingers crossed that amazon will launch a global plan soon.
I agree--once I heard about the Kindle 2 I was excited about this new device and could not wait to get my hands on it, however, the HIGH PRICE did slow my purchasing power. Now with the addition of the Kindle DX I am confused and thinking about just waiting for this area of the market to mature for a season or two.
Jon..really ENJOY the show. I TRUST your informative and sound advice on items you review. Keep up the AWESOME reviews!
I wish I could afford the Kindle DX, because I spend about $900 a semester on textbooks. Like you said, there aren't many text books in the right format yet though. Possibly in the future, but at the moment its not worth it.
I'm totally in favor of the DX if they can get more text book companies to jump on the e-book bandwagon. It would be nice to not have to spend $100+ on a text book, not to mention the bulk of carrying them all. I think the product has great potential in the educational landscape, but until then, it's not something I'm lusting over.
I like the kindle app for the iphone!! I also really like audiobooks on my ipod. Good for listening when driving. Wait til apple get the netbook. I might be going for the apple netbook
but yeah its sucks cuz its not even a year and they're already releasing a new kindle? talk about trying to make money... they are both expensive and i really dont think they are wirth that much... sure books cost less but come on u arent really getting much for ur money... anyways thats what i think...
love the idea for txt books in school....being a college student it sucks having to carry around all those books but i think this wud help if u cud get ur books on there but 500$ is a stupid price cant see ever paying that...EVER!!!
dumbest thing ive ever seen, theres a brand new kindle and then 2 months later they come out with a new one. i would get a sony one. its touch screen, so much better. why the hell would u need a qwerty on an e-book anyways
i totally agree on everything you said it would be great to get the DX at the Kindle 2 price. but $489.99!!!!!!! way too much!!!!!! especially in this economy
I don't forsee me getting a kindle until maybe the 5th or 6th generation. when there are significantly more features, a better design, and a lower price. Frankly i don't need one, i'd really like it just to save space, because i have so many books and textbooks.
I do see this replacing paper books in maybe 20 years. I won't need a library or a book shelf or anything, and can save a lot of storage in my house.
i would like that if i could get my textbooks on it... its so expensive for textbooks..... i spend easily over 500 dollars on textbooks a semester... i think this would be worth it for me... i can easily get my use out of it
A higher price for a bigger screen does make sense, and the native support for PDF is a great idea. However, Jon is right. In our current economy, spending $500 on a digital book reader is not worth it. If Amazon were to provide a software update for the Kindle 2 to support native PDF, that would be a better route to go.
i think the kindle dx is awesome BUT your right it needs color, and a touch screen PLUS ITS WAY TOO F**CKING EXPENSIVE if it was like 150-200$ i think it would awesome
Jon, I totally agree with you that this Kindle DX is not worth the price tag. Im also disappointed that the features are not a big improvement from the Kindle 2 as most would have expected. Per contra, I can see the Kindle DX being possibly a reasonable purchase if the database for the textbooks is greatly expanded. I would like a majority of textbooks available currently to be available for the Kindle DX. Even still I might consider otherwise buying a Kindle 2.
I love my Kindle 2 which I have Amazon convert my PDF formatted school reading material. Of course though the graphs and charts don't show up correctly. Therefore I wish they would update the firmware for my Kindle to handle that. I have about another 2 years of school and may consider purchasing the Kindle DX for school and pleasure reading. Sure beats me lugging my laptop around during the day.
as a student, for me, the kindle 2 was already too expensive.
i luv e-book readers but i just didnt think the kindle 2 was worth the $300 price-point.
and this is too much. it doesnt even seem to hav that many new features.
i think wat amazon do is trying to is trying to make themselves a luxury producer. much like apple, i think wat theyre trying to do is raise the price point and market it as luxury products and aim and the pro market rather than the regular consumer.
but remember the iphone was 600 for the start and the plan is not the best but people were still eating it up people paid just to use it and it was litter and because we had to have it so this is inserted to who like ebook readers but true it is a hefty price tag for what it can do
lol cept the iphone can run a kindle and then do 300000000 other things so 500 dollar kindle is obsurd compaired to the original pricing of the iphone
I don't see how the kindle pays for it self if you have to pay twice in the long run when you are done

I think it's good if there would be a new reader where you can underline text. Then it will be interesting for the educational markets.
Provided that all expensive study books are digital. Even the heavy medicine study books.
which then can be updated from time to time.
Untill then...I stick to my paper version, because it smells good, it feels good, and it just is darn sweet to have a full bookcase in your bedroom.

books are one of the greatest creation of all kind.

Tomoe1868 2 years ago
I would have to disagree with the idea that a touch screen is needed. I've always had too much trouble with touch screen keyboards- I need the tactile feel of depressing a button, to know I have actually hit the key I was intending to hit. Touch screens can't do that for me. Also, if you've seen the Sony Prs 700, it's a hot mess; Yes, touch screen, but because of that it has a VERY (dare I say impossibly) reflective surface you cannot get rid of for love or money and words are blurry.
Tomoe1868 2 years ago
I completely agree with you. After all the hype, when I got a chance to see the Dx, I was confused. No buttons on the left side? And it looked so... big. I mean, that's the point, a larger screen, but I love the portability of my Kindle 2 (OR Kindle 6' as it's to be known, now) and I think that the Kindle Dx... by it's nature sacrifices that. Also, I just didn't see a huge number of improvements, be they hardware or software on the Kindle DX; combined they could probably be counted on one hand.

This can save money though, As a university student it will be possible to download textbooks via TPB, saving a shit load of money and allowing you to keep massive numbers of texts in you bag. THe DX is way cheaper than buying all those textbooks. I am looking for something like this come the fall

I really was disappointed even by Kindle 2 since I have already Kinldle 1.
I didn't see it worth the difference.
and now w/ DX neh.
and to be honest kindle1 has SD.
for me that difference is alot more important that text-speech feature, slim design or what's available now in DX.
Not worth at all.
and w/ 500 $, NO F***ing way. I will wait for a colored kindle w/ more features not just different.

The price is just way too high. You can find a laptop/PC for nearly the same price.
I also think the DX itself is too big. I'm not huge into reading/e-book readers, but I imagine portability is a factor while purchasing.
The new Kindle's is nearly a foot long. If you're going that big, you might as well take the actual book along instead.

I can still exchange my K2.
sippitysipsap 2 years ago
I wont be getting the kindle dx. I have the kindle 2 and yes I wanted a bigger screen, plus more space for holding books, but not at that price! I love my kindle 2. I brought it because of whispernet. But to "upgrade" to the dx would be a waste of time and money at this point. I like the screen but not the price. I also think they should have told ppl about the new version so as to make an informed decision about which one to buy. But hey if you have the money then go for it!
cballard07 2 years ago
since you asked...
I feel that the dx is more of a "trial" device for the time being
This means that they are creating a market space for future (better priced/ featured/ supported) products

i think that a larger ereader would have some demand in a business market if it had email support were presentations and ext. can be seen also manuals and training books but in a consumer market it makes no sense to have a large $500 e reader. the technology isn't that far were they can be a help over the original textbook

i personally hate these things as they are. books are valuable things to have. sure they might be more delicate than an e-book reader, but it's always nice and authentic to fill your home with them. i'd never be able to switch from good traditional books to these readers anyway.

yeah $500 is way too steep.
KrispyReviewer 2 years ago
Don't like it overall. I feel like Amazon is trying to ride the momentum of the Kindle 2. But I think part of the charm of the Kindle 2 is that its portable, where you can carry it around without much problem. This one seems ginormous and with the $500 price tag, way not worth it. I think this could have waited.

You see I love the idea of the kindle being a gadget freak or the Sony book reader, however I still don't think there is anything that can beat buying a novel, opening it up and reading it, right down to the smell of a new book, I know that sounds silly. I love books, I never used to at school I was as thick as a plank of wood, now a bit older a wise I have developed a passion for collecting books. All the pros for the digital read are good but still a few fundamental cons for me. Take care mate
iharrison30 2 years ago
I might think about buying one for US$500, but I'm in Australia, so I was really wanting an international Kindle, although if they did announce one I doubt we would get it here down under. We don't even have amazon and all of the online stores I've found are no cheaper than our brick and mortar stores.
Fingers crossed that amazon will launch a global plan soon.

Jon4Lakers,
I agree--once I heard about the Kindle 2 I was excited about this new device and could not wait to get my hands on it, however, the HIGH PRICE did slow my purchasing power. Now with the addition of the Kindle DX I am confused and thinking about just waiting for this area of the market to mature for a season or two.

A higher price for a bigger screen does make sense, and the native support for PDF is a great idea. However, Jon is right. In our current economy, spending $500 on a digital book reader is not worth it. If Amazon were to provide a software update for the Kindle 2 to support native PDF, that would be a better route to go.
