I gotta say, some dogs are terrible pets and are unsuitable. It's not always an irresponsible owner. I rescued a dog from a shelter and raised him. He barked so much my neighbors wouldn't go outside. I spent hundreds trying different collars to help him stop but he would either chew them off or just become indifferent to the spray collars. I tried really hard but his barking was so loud and persistant that I was shunned by my neighbors and I don't blame them.

I went to a shelter yesterday I looked at all the dogs and cats in the shelter,but there was one that stood out. She was in the back corner of her pen, whimpering.I told the staff I wanted to see her,I knew my mom wouldn't let me have dog, but I enjoyed looking at them..I played with her,all she wanted was a forever home. I put her back up and she started howling and whining again.I wished I could have taken her that day.The next day she was gone,I can only hope she got a loving home.

The best present my daughter ever received was a giant wolf, Bobo, from the dog pound. Her best friend was foster caring for the dog, trying to find a home for him so he wouldn't be put to sleep. I agreed to adopt him, and she brought him to my daughter's birthday party. We loved him dearly. He brought a lot of joy into our lives.

In Memoriam for Bobo, who died on July 21, 2011. He will always be loved.

As I sat here and watched this I started to cry hard and when I looked down in my arms, I had this beautiful dog in my arms who was in the same exact situation a month ago. Grant is a rescue from the high kill NYC ACC and was due to die in 48 hrs..they were going to kill him if a rescue didn't pull him..the rescue asked me if I would be a foster for him if they pull..I said yes. He is the most wonderful dog and all these cats and dogs are, please give a shelter/rescue dog/cat a chance.

as a rescuer that has rescued over 800 animals I can only say a rescued dog would love you more. They know, they are acutely aware that they are in grave danger at a pound.

I volunteer in a shelter that sees 13000 animals come thru a year, n it is a sad, lonely place. Please spay/neuter your dogs n cats, take care of ur animals, don't look at them like they are disposable n convince others to look at their pets the same way. They are family n u have to fight for them like u do ur kids!!!

I worked at a high end pet store in AZ... ALL of the puppies in there were from puppy mills. DO NOT BELIEVE THEM when they tell you they are not from mills... They are. They were all sick and required ALOT of medication. Please, please adopt and save a life. Don't support these cruel mills.

Like most people, this brought me to tears. Ive cats at home, but if I could I would go to the shelter and bring all the dogs home. I don't find if fair how animals like dogs, are behind bars, they live most of their lives in a small room, and the 'ugly' dogs never get a second glance, while the 'cute' puppies are out of the shelter in less than a month.

Not only do people abandon their dogs when they get to be over a year, when a dog has babies they sometimes just abandon them outside....

As i see this video i imagine my dog being in a shelter place like this and it just makes me sad. With all the happiness he has and know that i will always be there for him .:( .They used to be happy , but now their owners left them heartbroken. makes me so sad. please adopt one of these dogs. My mutt was rescued by my girlfriend... There were 6 in total, I kept the last one. It is the most loving, loyal, playfull and indescribible dog I have ever had. She is a lovely dog... Adopt and rescue. Spay and neuter... Unawanted animals are doomed, don't be a part of it!

I think the term shelter is bad for all these places. They are far from a true "shelter". They do not keep them safe from harm.

p.s. if we didn't have these shelters to take the animals in, they WOULD be on the street, to starve to death - would you want that? Not everyone takes responsibility when they have a pet (I have 2 cats and wouldn't give them up for the world) but not everyone has that luxury.

Pets either die on the street in pain/suffering/hunger/whatever­... or they are humanely put to sleep to not have to suffer a life like that (if they cant find a forever home)... I'd rather the 2nd one.

Nobody said they were against animal shelters, but believe me, I volunteer at one (which I used to work at) , people who run animal shelters would like nothing more than to go out of business due to a lack of need. That's the point here, obviously there's a need for animal shelters, it's just that it would be better if people took responsibility for their pets instead of seeing them as "disposable".

monkeybone, as for China, the same thing applies...man domesticated these animals and has control over them and their environment, we CREATED these animals so we have a DUTY to treat them with compassion. (Just as in North America ...it is a travesty how domesticated farm animals are treated.) BTW, people often have the LAMEST excuses for surrendrering their animals...when the truth is that they just can't be bothered (esp. with small animals like bunnies and rats)

Many dogs who are already on the streets breed and make puppies... how are those puppies our fault? They're just doing what they're genetics is made for - reproducing.

And some people have to move and they can't take their pets with them and nobody else can take them...

At least these animals aren't hungry on the streets...

I know these animals need homes... but we can only do so much and just hope for the best.

The animals put down, they are in a better place now...

monkeybone, ALL dogs are our responsiblity, as we are the ones who domesticated them, created different breeds to suit our needs etc. There aren't really alot of feral dogs roaming the city streets of North America, these dogs you speak of were once someone's pet. Breeders are also to blame, we don't need so many dogs being bred when there are so many out ther needing homes. "Having to move" is a no excuse, when you bring a dog into your family it's a LIFELONG commitment and RESPOSNSIBILITY!
