I find that a reasonable excuse. There are a lot of pussies who shall remain unnamed who cut their hair for lesser reasons. I always saw the hair on metalheads as being representative of strength so it's one thing to lose it naturally and another to wuss out and cut it.
I always saw long hair on metalheads as a sign of true dedication and devotion to metal. It shows that it is not just some trendy phase you went through because it takes like 2-3 years to grow your hair long.
