okay im gonna go out on a limb here. Speaking as an old fan (joined after ride the lightning released), I think Jason's solo part is one of metallica's worst moments ever. His timing is off, and no I don't think he has a good bass tone (though better than any he got, er, they got in subsequent J Newstead records...

Obviously, Rob T is a proper bass player. Jason was like a fill- in guitarist whi could play bass. Fuk u if u dont agree :)

This album was better than ...And Justice For All in so many ways it's not even funny. Lars really had some terrific percussion on these songs. And Jason, poor Jason actually gets to be heard as a band member, before falling out with James and Lars on the Justice sessions. Why he tolerated the abuse he did, for so many years, is a mystery to me. But here on Garage Days, they were a true team. A terrific document of the '80s underground scene.

Many rock albums are littered with covers, including early LPs from Elvis, The Beatles, Dylan, Zeppelin. "Playing the standards" is what musicians have always done; writing and performing your own original songs is a very recent idea, pioneered by the likes of The Beatles and Bob Dylan. In the end, a great album is a great album.
