some things in life cannot be measured by degrees - In hidustani music we say "kya baath hai" to mean "what a wonderful phrase" - this is classic philosophy of a line and totally natural also.
@swiftytheguitarman Spot on brother he is a living breathing embarrassment. I cant believe what a knob that bloke is, he wouldn’t never have had such a career in Australia and I simply cringe when I see him on Letterman.
@bloodythinandfast "original...for a gay. ha you fucken idiot when did the arguement about paul that baldy headed little know become an issue of sexuality. If i was gay id give you a good fucking!
@vincart2010 Oh brother, like Australians are such hipsters. Spare me. Shaffer was essentially the musical director for SNL when it WAS the essence of hip comedy and was well-regarded by most of the top entertainers and musicians of the day during the 70s, 80s and so on. He's worked with the best and is respected by all of them. IMO, anybody that appeared in "Spinal Tap" is definitely cool. Far more hip than some Aussie git.
@vincart2010 really your comment alone shows your actuality of person and respect in any way worldly or otherwise so sad to see such things under some one else's music. I guess I am the messed up person for having been born in America its easy to generalize so go ahead and show me you way...
@Kedbuka and what an amazing high "essentially the musical director for SNL" essentially another fucked yankie TV show. Less TV and your country wouldnt be filled to over-flowing with obese ignorant arrogant human sewage!
holay krap, a Chamberlin with the back off of it & the tapes and motor flywheel & all...swoon/drool. I'd sure like to see and hear a Patrick Warren solo album...Warren's pinnacle was the Chamberlin work on "Drained" from Penn's "This & That" album.
Let me tell you people, that 1990 tour was a hell of a show, with two really tight, well-rehearsed bands, both supporting albums critics were praising for their "Beatles-esque"-ness (Tears For Fears' Seeds of Love was on the McCartney side, Penn's March was more Lennon). When Michael played No Myth that night, the crowd went wild, and Michael was incredulous. "What's wrong with you people, it's just a song!" he said.
@Gunfighter1b > Yes it has. Over twenty years. Think of it this way: if we were listening to Nevermind for the first time right now, this song would be like Rod Stewart's Maggie May. (Chronologically, not stylistically).
I was nearly knocked down by @gilmoregossiplover's comment that her dad played this when she was growing up. I was in college at the time and was extremely lucky to catch Michael on tour opening for Tears For Fears in 1990.
@johnaldIV - It's an instrument called a Chamberlin, which is basically a keyboard that plays a series of tapes with sounds like strings and horns, etc. It's similar to an instrument called the Mellotron.
Wow. I'd forgotten what a great backing band Schaffer + Co. were before they became yodeling idiots, and Paul turned into a cross between Gilbert Gottfried and Uncle Fester.
I am so glad that I have found this version of the song... always loved the words and tune, but the album version's production is just a tad too 80s for me...
I agree. The drums sound like M-80's in a trashcan on the LP cut. If you can dig up the EP, it's acoustic guitar with the glass harp backing. Very choice.
"what if I were Romeo in black jeans? What if I was Heathcliff? Its no myth." what a great line, Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff one of my fav characters.
Twenty years later, this song is more true to my life than it was in my freshman year. I'm glad MP found Aimee Mann. He doesn't have his heart broken like in No Myth by a player. He doesn't get crushed like in "Look what the Cat Dragged in." He's happy in life, and that's way cool.
Man this is dated. I don't mean that in a pejorative way. Its just a pure slice of late 80's early 90's top 40 adult contemporary. I think its the chorus effect on everything that makes this. Bookend this with some Edie Brickell and you've got yourself the makings of a flashback mix tape.
They are all members of the "Late Show," backup band led by pianist Paul Schaeffer, which has been backing up great musical guests since the shows inception.
Awesome ...even in ways better than the record ..

Paul Schaeffer looks like he's whacking off. "Better stand back everybody, get back.. get back". Geez, a little overkill for a fairly mellow song.

In my country, the Paul S. musician, is often seen leading a backup band for many well known artists for some special event.
Sorry you have such a disgusting Paul S. in your country.
